Kin-iro no Corda (La Corda d’Oro) ~primo passo~ episode 18

As was seen from the previous episode, the strings of Hino’s violin breaks before she finishes her performance. Everyone saw the sad look in her face as she left the stage in a hurry. Yunoki, who was to perform next, was saying how Hino caused everyone to be affected/perturbed (especially Hihara, Tsuchiura, and Tsukimori). But he said to himself that he will not be affected (he will not let it ruin his performance) by it. But despite saying that, he couldn’t help but remember his encounters with Hino… and the sad look she had on her face in her last performance.

Ousaki-sempai comments on how Yunoki was not his usual self. Kana-yan says he’s become quite serious in this performance of his. Everyone was amazed by his performance, even the judges.

And then the result of the competition was announced. Hino was 7th, Hihara was 6th, Shimizu-kun was 5th, Fuyuumi was 4th, Tsuchiura was 3rd, Tsukimori was 2nd, and Yunoki was 1st place. Hino still takes her time alone in the dressing room, when Lili suddenly appears, wondering if she’s alright. Hino asks what happened during her performance, that the strings of the violin broke and it shone with red light/sparkle as it broke.

Lili told her that the violin is just like a mirror that reflects her own heart. When she loves music, and enjoys it, the violin will easily give out a beautiful sound. But when she becomes hasty/impatient and becomes filled with anxiety, the violin will suffer damage and the span of time before its magic will lose effect will hasten. As for what happened to her violin, it wasn’t able to take what has become of her feelings and ended up being broken. Hino became filled with guilt because of this, and apologizes deeply to her violin for what she has done to it.

Lili tried to use some magic to fix it, but was unable to do so. Hino tells Lili not to bother doing it anymore, since she’s going to end up breaking it anyway even if it gets fixed. And with what happened, she says how she doesn’t have any right to say that she loves the violin. Mio and Nao goes backstage to look for Hino, and the other girls went with them to see how she was doing. Hino gets out of the room and apologizes for causing them to worry. She thanks them and decides to go home ahead of them.

Yunoki was congratulated by his fangirls for winning the competition. On his way home, he stops by the bayside(?), and reflects on his own life. He says something like “Despite one could say what I’ve been doing up until now is perfect/flawless”… Then remembers the time when he was a kid. He used to play the piano, and was told by his piano teacher that he’s been doing great and that his progress is even faster than his brothers. (He seemed to have so much fun playing before… >.<) But then his grandmother told him to stop playing the piano, since his brothers are already doing so…

Then as Yunoki grew up, his grandmother never gave him freedom in making his own decisions. She held his schedule tight, scolding him when he arrives home a little late. When his grandmother knew about him going to Seisou Gakuen, she condronted him by asking whether he’s going to pursue this music studies until college. Yunoki tells her that he still hasn’t decided on that yet, and was trying to choose between taking up business and commerce, or law for college. His grandma reminds him of the fact that he is the 3rd son in the Yunoki family, and despite the fact that he should become skilled in music, his real responsibility is to serve as the support of his father and his brothers. As he was forbidden to resist and fight against his grandma’s will, he just put up a fake smile and tells him ‘i understand, grandma’… >.< (end of flashback)

Yunoki reiterates those words “I understand, grandma” (sarcastically)… Yunoki tells how being the youngest son as he is, despite how skilled he may be, he is not allowed to surpass his brothers (for the sake of the family… he said it’s an ‘untold rule’).Despite being “controlled”, still he was able to excel in music and perform well in the competition. Yunoki started playing the flute because his grandfather started so, and has been told that it’s but simply a hobby. And that Seisou Gakuen’s ordinary school isn’t really meant for studying art/music (not quite sure about this though… >.<) I think what he was trying to say with this is that he didn’t enter a school that would make him take music seriously… so that later on he would be able to support the Yunoki business (as he mentioned). “Such a boring life, isn’t it?” he says… then thinks about how his meeting with Hino has made him lose composure (?) (or perhaps made him perturbed…)
