Shinkyoku Soukai Polyphonica Episode 1

Watched the first episode of Polyphonica, and despite the fact that the animation is quite below the level of the game’s artwork, I’d say it’s still good. I enjoyed watching this, though I didn’t quite find it that interesting. There’s a little mystery foreshadowing, especially with regards to Phoron and Corti’s past, and some fun scenes with Corti.

I’d perhaps stay and continue watching this to see what happens more~ and to see more Phoron x Corti ^^ (but if he turns too lame, and the girls (like Perse) come flocking to him like a harem, and he doesn’t stand up for who he really likes, sigh… T__T). But given the lack of time I have, I don’t think this will be something I’ll give priority to seeing as to how other series this season that would prove to be more superior.

A battle between a spirit (Corticarte) and a horde of monsters ensues one night, and despite managing to defeat all the foes, the spirit ends up using all her powers. Just then, the sound of someone singing allows her to regain her strength. She approaches the young Phoron, and offers to make a pact with him - that he will be hers, and he will be able to use her powers in return… through the music that he weaves, which represents his soul.

First Movement - The Crimson Spirit

Phoron gets his vehicle checked (and fixed) for maintenance, and a hot-tempered Corticarte waits for his return. It’ll still take more or less 3 hours before the maintenance finishes, so Corti (Corticarte) says that they’ll be better off sightseeing, since they’ve come all the way from the mainland, and also because it’s Phoron’s first visit in this place. Phoron notices a sad-looking girl sitting on the bench by herself, and somewhat wonders about her. The girl takes notice of Corti, and was reminded of something (related to this spirit emblem of some sort).

They take a walk around the city, and Corti acts like a “tourist guide” who tells Phoron of the different sights in the city. Phoron doesn’t quite listen to what Corti is saying, as the sight of a phone booth reminds him of wanting to call their office (Divine Song Players Mgt Corp). It seems that their office is quite busy that time, and these cute little creatures helps pick up the phone for Renbart :3 Phoron simply informs their office that he will be back by more or less 4 o’clock. Renbart tells their boss, Eufinley, this message, then leaves as well.

The girl in the park then thinks about her past, where her grandmother tells of this story about the Crimson Spirit (the one at the beginning of the episode), and she was so amazed by her beauty and strength. Her grandma seems to have kept this emblem (?) with the face of the Crimson Spirit engraved on it.

Corti continues to drag Phoron into her “walk in the city”, deciding to go to places without any consent from him ^^” They once again get past the girl on the bench, and Phoron tells Corti that it was the same girl from before. He was quite worried as he saw the sad look on her face, and goes to approach her despite Corti’s initial reaction against it. Phoron asks her if she’s alright, because even the [cute] little spirits are worried about her. He tells her that these spirits become small and changes their color when they sense someone having problems. The girl then becomes comfortable around them and tells her about her past.

She tells them that it’s been 5 years since her grandmother passed away, but both her father and mother have gotten over it now, and have completely forgotten her existence. She herself has started to forget about her too, despite the fact that she loved her grandma so much. Her grandma’s house is scheduled to be demolished, so she wanted to get her memento (to remind her of her grandmother). But the she thought, “What if I don’t remember grandma even when I already have her memento in my hands…?”, and that’s what caused her to worry. Phoron tells she should go and do so, since she wants to bring back the memories she had of her grandma. But he reminds her that what matters most is her feelings of love for her grandma, which will never fade no matter what. “Physical appearance along does not make a person”, he says with uncertainty. Then Corti scolds her for not thoroughly thinking about the consequences of his actions (not being direct to the point, saying things with uncertainty). Corti then reiterates Phoron’s point to the girl: the most important thing is her feelings of not wanting to forget his grandma. It doesn’t matter whether she can remember about her grandma or not, so she has to go get her memento. Just then, someone comes to pick up the girl, who was being called ‘Misaki’ (the one who picked her up must be assistant of hers / her household). Phoron and Corti leaves as well. They go to the repair shop, and was informed that the maintenance is complete.

Some more characters who work for the Divine Song Players Mgt Corp are introduced, Prinesca and Perserte, who has a crush on Phoron. Perse was quite saddened by the fact that Phoron wasn’t around, and was ecstatic when he called up. Phoron ended up having a lengthy conversation with her, which somewhat pisses Corti… ^^”’

Corti confronts Phoron about his behavior, and asks him if he actually intends to go out with every woman on earth, because he even talked to some girl he doesn’t even know and asked her about her worries ^^” (She’s quite jealous.. hehe :p) Phoron tells her it’s because he understands what that girl felt.

Phoron tells her that he doesn’t remember a bit about his parents, unlike the girl who still has something that could remind her of such memories. And because of that, he told her to go and do what she has to do. Corti then apologizes for making him remember about such painful memories, and Phoron simly tells her not to worry about it, since he has Corti by his side now (and that is enough to ease him from his loneliness). Corti blushes because of his comment (cute :3)

Misaki manages to get her grandma’s memento, but then the demolition [explosion] starts to take place. Phoron and Corti finds out about this, and this alarms Corti, because this will disrupt the spirits in that place. They rush off to the place, and Phoron activates this mechanism in his vehicle that turns it into an instrument for playing Divine Music. He plays the piano, and makes Corti transform into the her Crimson Spirit form. She comes just in time to save Misaki, who was surprised by the sight of the Crimson Spirit (the character in the stories her grandma told her).

Phoron hurriedly runs off after asking Misaki if she was able to get hold of her grandma’s memento, because he will be charged a penalty for performing the Divine Music without the company’s knowledge. Corti doesn’t seem to have the slightest bit of worry, and even introduced herself and Phoron to Misaki with much pride (that she’s a spirit, contracted to Phoron, a “Divine Musician”) ^^;;

Misaki’s assistant (or rather their maid) informs her father of the incident, and was surprised that he knows about Corticarte, the “Crimson Annihilator” he said. We find out that Corticarte died on the battlefield 15 years ago… and realizes the fact that Corticarte became a spirit after that time. He seems to know much about her past and finds the fact that Corticarte and Phoron are together, really interesting.

Phoron contacts the company, and was scolded because of what he has done. Corti tells him to take responsibility for his own actions, then they head off to go back to the mainland. As the episode ends, Corti narrates about the world of spirts and humans…

“Spirits live in this powerful world, which forms a bond with these spirits. Those who use their power through the [unprecedented] music that they weave are called Divine Musicians, also known as Dantists, who they regard with high respect. Weave thy music. That is our pact. That is thine pact, thine delight, and thine power. Because this [Divine] Music that you weave, represents your spirit. Polyphonica, this is the mainland of humans and spirits.”
