Synopsis: Koemushi (Dung Beetle) appears to the children to give them instructions about piloting the robot. Maki names the robot Zearth and Waku is chosen to fight the enemy.

I shouldn’t have read the entry on Wikipedia on Bokura no prior to watching this episode. Now, I have an idea on how the story will progress. Oh well, in this episode, the children get a glimpse of things to come. One thing becomes clear to them: there is no drawing back.
This episode focuses more on Waku. We get to know his background and his motivation for piloting Zearth. Zearth’s controls differ from that of most mecha. Controlled by sheer will, there is no interface, whether mechanical or organic, between the pilot and the machine.
I think the Zearth cockpit is interesting. The pilots sit on chairs arranged in a circle. The chairs hold a significance to a particular pilot. For instance, Maki’s chair is a rocking chair which was her mother’s favorite. I wonder if the background of each chair will be explained for each character. Waku’s wasn’t given an explanation though.
Koemushi reminds me of a mouse. Not the creature but the device. In most anime, characters like Koemushi add some comic relief apart from their supporting roles, if any. But I think the case of Koemushi is diffent. A sign, perhaps, of the emotional direction the series will take.
The next episode will probably be about the children’s reactions to the events that occured in this one.

That was pretty damn sad. I didn’t think the anime was gonna go as far as to have a kid die, but I guessed wrong >_
