Claymore – 02 “The Black Card”

Synopsis: Clare receives a black card from the organization. She sets off to kill a Claymore who has gone beyond her limits

More about Claymores are revealed in this episode as Raki frequently asks Clare questions. For instance, the organization sends the Claymores money or whatever they need like the time when the hooded guy gave Clare a new set of clothing.

Claymores, being part-human and part-Yoma, run the risk of becoming fully Yoma. It’s their human mind that keeps this in check but the more a Claymore uses her power, the more she cannot control becoming Yoma. Desiring to die as human, they give their black card to a Claymore whom they want to die in the hands of. Elena, Clare’s closest friend, gave her black card to Clare.

This episode shows us a bit of the human side of Clare. She seemed distraught after receiving the black card but she had to do the task and it’s what Elena wanted. Raki, however, was just too emotional in this episode.

I guess one of the main themes of Claymore is Clare’s struggle for her humanity. I guess by taking Raki along with him, she wants to be constantly reminded of what it’s like to be human.

  1. It is also interesting to note that each Claymore has her own emblem, the same one on their swords. With the part about Raki though, maybe it has something to do with her past. Maybe she had a younger brother who died that is why she decided to become a Claymore. But that’s just mere speculation.

I think Raki’s sensitivity to death and killing is understandable, seeing what he had to endure in the past.

I am really liking this series, Clare and the concept of Claymore really intrigues me.

I’ve read volume 10 of the manga just now and I can only hope that they animate up to volume 11, which would be a good point to end the first season and prepare groundwork for an eventual second season. I already knew that the plot gets better after around volume 2, but volumes 8 to 10 really raise the bar a notch.
