Deep Frying Kaze no Stigma 05

Here goes another round of my deep-frying comparison of the Kaze no Stigma anime with the novels =D

The anime changed the sequence of events a bit compared to the novel… The event where Ayano is walking with her friends, and bumped into Kazuma and Kirika happened even before the celebration started, which caused some slight changes in terms of how the conversations went, but remained true to the critical plot. It however, omitted quite a portion of the novel in terms of Kazuma’s dialogues which should’ve made his argument clear regarding his answer of “Takuya died because he was weak” With this change of sequence, Ayano’s “bad mood” stems from what happened with Kazuma in the earlier episode (after the fight with the youma), rather than what happened in the celebration (which actually makes more sense as to why Ayano will still be in a bad mood…).

Now when Yukari mentioned about Ayano’s “bad mood”, and her speculation that something happened between Ayano and ‘some guy’, Nanase said “So this daughter with a father-complex has taken an interest in some guy other than her papa, eh…” And Ayano is more honest with regards to her ‘feelings’ in the novel, as she replies “It’s just that… I’ve never seen someone much cooler than my father…” , leaving Nanase and Yukari speechless for a second, then tells Ayano something like, “…it’s impossible to look for a guy in his teens or twenties who’s similar to your father (or exudes the same aura as her father)” From what I can understand, Ayano was going to reply that Kazuma actually ‘exudes’ that same aura, but then stops in the middle of what she was about to say and can’t believe that she’s thinking about Kazuma ^^;; But then as she reflects about it, she realizes that her father and Kazuma are actually complete opposites, but both of them are strong… not strong in terms of their powers, but strong in terms of their personality and overall character, with which Ayano thinks Kazuma rivals her dad with.

As Ayano is in daze thinking about this, her friends make her snap from her thoughts and say that Ayano must be thinking of “the guy she likes”. Ayano denies this, telling them that there’s no way she’ll like “that guy”, and Nanase teases her by asking “what kind of guy is he?” (Then there’s a brief information mentioned about how Ayano, Yukari and Nanase are such an ‘exquisite combination’ because of their varying personalities). To dodge the teasing of her best friends, Ayano convinces them to go eat cakes somewhere, and afterwards, they walk around happily, then through this entrance of the “love hotel town” on purpose (for ‘shortcut’, they said… and as slow as Ayano is, I don’t think she noticed that they’re already in this place filled with love hotels)

Ayano only noticed this later on, and we find out that it was her best friends’ scheme for them to walk into this ‘shortcut’. They said it’s because Ayano’s really “clean” (the fact that Ayano is so disgusted with these kinds of places… so perhaps Nanase and Yukari thinks that she needs to be tainted with impure thoughts? :p), and Ayano says that of course she’ll feel disgusted about this place, because she can’t understand what comes into the minds of guys who go to these places. And it was then that Kazuma and Kirika appears into the scene, who seemed to have come out from this “love hotel town”. Ayano’s first reaction is to ask Kazuma what they’re doing in “this place”, and Kazuma teases her by asking “just ‘what’ is that (activity) you’re referring to?”, and of course Ayano can’t blurt out that ‘sex’ word =P

Ayano sees Kirika as her “enemy”, especially with the stares she gives Ayano (I believe that she’s teasing Ayano), and the fact that she’s completely defeated in terms of being a “woman”. Ayano and Kirika exchanges sharp stares at each other, and Kirika asks Kazuma if she should arrest him for his promiscuity (two timing between her and Ayano). And it’s with this that Kazuma comments that Ayano is simply his “distant relative”. He also adds that there’s nothing in between them, and he doesn’t even have the desire to “do anything” to her.

After that follows the same scene in the anime, where Kazuma and Kirika leaves, and Kirika continues to glance at Ayano. But in the novel, Kirika actually tells Kazuma, “I think it’ll be better to explain things to her”, but Kazuma simply tells her there’s no need to do such a bothersome thing. Now with the previous statement of Ayano’s friend about her having a “father complex”, it becomes clear that when they mentioned that “such a guy” won’t be Ayano’s type, they’re comparing Kazuma’s carefree attitude with her father’s seriousness. When Yukari mentions that it’s obvious that Ayano likes Kazuma (and her “one-sided love”), and Ayano asks her why she thinks so, Yukari tells her to reflect on her own reactions, as it clearly shows in her “jealousy of the girl who stole the guy she likes” :p

Ayano refuses to acknowledge this, and so her friends ask her, why is if then that she’s so affected when she found out (or assumed) that Kazuma did “H” with some girl. Ayano lies to herself and tells them that she’s not affected, but of course her friends sees through her ^^ They just tell Ayano that they completely understand her, that she hates Kazuma (but of course they think otherwise XD)

After this, there’s a scene where the nanpas Ayano “kicked the heck out of”, comes for revenge… this was omitted in the anime, which again, should’ve been an entertaining watch XD I can’t help but pity these guys, attacking Ayano in her state of raging jealousy, and they all end up becoming ‘tools’ for Ayano to vent out her anger on (Ayano gives them a much more brutal attack, twisting their leg, doing triple axles on them ^^;; )

Now when Ayano arrives in their house for the celebration, she asks if Kazuma has already arrived, and Soushu notices that she’s in a bad mood, and asks her if something happened between her and Kazuma. Ayano replies, “Oh nothing! I hate that guy! I don’t even to see his face, nor hear his name! That bastard, he should just go [and have fun] with that middle-aged woman!” Soushu says, “I see…”, realizing that Ayano’s burning in jealousy, and that Kazuma’s the reason behind her anger :p

As Kazuma arrives, Ren greets him with an “Okaerinasai! (Welcome home)”, but Kazuma simply pats his head and doesn’t reply “Tadaima! (I’m home)”, because this isn’t his home. The part in the anime where Ayano hugs Ren and confronts Kazuma for his cold behavior wasn’t in the novel however, and Kazuma himself comforted Ren instead by patting his head. When Misao shows up in front of Kazuma, his thoughts were shown in the novel as to how he saw her as a “yamato nadeshiko (perfect woman)”. And when Kazuma thought of kissing her, I think he was trying to test if she still won’t protest against it.

Now this is where the difference of the sequencing affects Ayano’s dialogue… Since Ayano saw Kazuma earlier with Kirika, when Kazuma tells her that her words were harsh (when she scolded Misao), she tells him, “It’s not harsh! For someone who already has a girlfriend to still hit on other girls, you’re the worst!” (girlfriend – referring to Kirika of course). Kazuma tells her that he doesn’t have a girlfriend, and when Ayano asks her what his relationship with Kirika is, he was about to tell her “she’s simply my… [colleague]”, Ayano cuts her off by replying “simply your sex friend?!” Kazuma laughs at Ayano’s response, and finds it amusing, so he just tells her “You can say that” :p and of course this infuriates Ayano even more XD

More of Ayano’s emotions were shown in the novel when Kazuma was stabbed by Misao… where it’s mentioned that Ayano actually trembled in fear as she thought Kazuma died with that attack, and fell on her knees in relief when she found out he’s alright. Kazuma asks her if there would be any problems if he died (teasing Ayano most likely), and Ayano once again lies to herself and tells Kazuma that Misao will be labeled as a murdered once he’s killed :p Kazuma wasn’t quite contented with this answer since he knows Ayano’s deceiving him (and she’s not very good at it), and sarcastically replies, “Oh really…”

And here comes a large portion of the novel that was cut out from the anime… When Ayano asked Kazuma if he has forgotten about his weak past just because he became stronger, Kazuma answers her by doing comparison with what happened to the Fuuga clan… He tells Ayano that the reason why the Fuuga revolted against the Kannagis wasn’t simply to revive the god (youma) the Kannagis sealed, but also to prove their strength and worth against the Kannagis. The Fuugas aren’t really incompetent, because they were skilled in the wind arts… they were strong, but the Kannagis proved to be stronger.

Kazuma mentions that among the four elements, the wind element is actually the weakest because of its ‘lightness’. And well, the wind accepts its being weak without any complaints, because it’s well aware of that fact. Kazuma’s tells Ayano that they themselves (Kannagis) have stepped on people who are weaker than them, in the case of the Fuugas. Kazuma explains that this is simply the logic behind ‘power’, where the strong feed on the weak. So in the case of what Ayano said of not being able to accept that fact, Kazuma tells her, “You want to trample on the strong people, but you can’t accept it when you are trampled upon by people who are stronger than you?! Just who do you think you are?!”

The other Kannagis (particularly Masato Oogami,Takuya’s uncle (brother of the branch family head Masayuki Oogami, Takuya’s father)) could not quite accept what Kazuma said, since they never gave him the right to trample on them or anything. Kazuma then tells them that it’s not for people to choose that (having the right to trample on people), since it’s simply by order of being weak or strong. He even tells him that he should at least have a strength like Ayano’s before he goes on telling him such things. (because the weak don’t have the right to complain) After that, he coldly tells Masato that perhaps he should even be thankful to Hyoue for getting rid of Takuya who he considers as an obstruction (in terms of claiming the throne of being the next head). Ren was just sleeping so peacefully amidst all this commotion, and the commotion ceases after he wakes up… ^^;;;

Then comes this Kazuma’s dream… which is regarding what happened 10 years ago (hinted in the anime episode), where Misao seems to be the girl mentioned in one of the scenes. I couldn’t quite understand what happened in that dream, but overall, it was some “nightmare” of Kazuma where this “Tooru-kun” was bullying him violently in anger… When he woke up, Kazuma mentioned that he seemed to have this habit of remembering bad things in his past… and mentioned that he accepted the fact that he was weak, and it’s for this reason that he refused to fight and continued to run away… (I really hope this will be shown in the anime next episode because I can’t fully understand what was going on >_<) And, Misao calls him up to go meet her.

In the novel, Ayano runs into Ren by chance even before they started snooping on Kazuma, where Ayano’s playfulness was shown as she teases Ren. When she saw Ren standing somewhere, she gives him a ‘hug attack’, and Ren pleads for her to let go of him, but Ayano refuses and tells him that he should do something to break free from it himself ^^;; Now the bystanders who see them actually thinks that they’re some “bishoujo shimai (beautiful sisters)” Ren’s getting all embarrassed with this since he’s at this age where he’s already not so innocent (and that he becomes embarrassed with “skinship” with women, as the novel literally said) Ayano further teases Ren as she comes close to him (nose to nose), lounging an attack to ‘kiss him’, and Ren of course becomes all flustered in embarrassment (since he’s a boy who’s easy to tease) XD

When they were eating inside this hamburger shop, Ayano still teases Ren, that she was able to kiss him in his sleep (during the celebration) ^^ Ren could still not get over what happened there (three days ago) when he woke up on Ayano’s lap (could not get over his astonishment and embarrassment from what happened). The novel also mentions that it’s with this experience that Ren realized the true meaning of “to crawl in a hole”, as he was all embarrassed from what happened. Ren even gets worried if his father finds out about this… ^^;;;

Then, it was in this same fastfood that they saw Misao and Kazuma meet up, to go to that hotel. Same events happen in the anime a novel with Misao’s henchmen’s attack on Kazuma. But in the anime, we’re already introduced (or saw a glimpse of) to Michael Harley, the “Tenshi-sama”.

(wow… what a long entry… I guess this just shows how much the anime “stripped” away parts of the novel from this episode… =___= Our last hope for seeing these scenes would be, in the manga…)

And, time for some spoilery pics…

First off, the MAJOR SPOILER character graph (READ @ YOUR OWN RISK!)

And this pic of Michael Harley and Misao (pretty much the “full-view image” of the last scene shown in the anime regarding their ‘ritual’), which gives me the shivers o_O

  2. As expected, the deep frying has become the one blog post that I look forward to the most every week. Lots of juicy details. ^_^

Too bad that so much good stuff was cut, it takes away too much from Ayano’s character development. I hope they are not planing on drastically altering the storyline.

  3. Great stuff you wrote. I wonder when we will see water and earth users on the show, but it could be Ayano’s two friends (just a guess).

About the character graph, what does it mean when he wants to get a hold of her? It’s not what I’m thinking, is it?

  4. usagijen, I can not thank you enough for posting parts of the the novel , as usual you are awesome i really enjoy ayano cute side it make her look less rough, hehehehe so ren is not so indifferent regarding her oneee sama lol, and i found kazuma teasing much more intense in the novel than in the anime, Sometimes the anime tend to give more of a big brother·like vibes, whereas the novel has more tension of that of a woman and a man lol.

  5. Hehe… I’m just glad to see people enjoy this as much as I do~ I believe KnS is the first novel I’ve really “read” =P (been planning to read FMP, and Saiunkoku before, but I don’t think the urge was enough, unlike KnS XD)

and yes, it’s quite sad to see the anime take away much of the entertainment, Ayano’s cute side, and Kazuma’s more intense sarcasm =P

    @lightbringer: I also hope the director / writer won’t drastically change the storyline… that’ll be a nightmare =__=

@Dm: Some of the other users (like the earth elemental), already appeared in volume 3 (and perhaps before volume 2 ended), so they should appear in about 3-4 episodes :)

and well, they’re not Ayano’s friends… hehe =P They’re new characters that would only be appearing later on ^^

I also don’t quite understand the ‘wants to get hold of her’ part, but lightbringer mentioned in the forum that it most likely means ‘get hold of her heart’ ;)

@tigerlily: indeed, Ayano’s much cuter in the novel, with all this teasing with Ren and all XD Lots of Ren x Ayano moments in the novel too, which should’ve been great to see in animated form ^-^

and, Ayano’s “jealousy blues” was much worse in the anime, isn’t it? o_O sigh… Ayano looks much short-tempered in the anime too.. >_<

  6. oh!!! my gosh, i’m completely solt i love this franchise so much, now it is unbearable, A crime to have to wait a week!!! lol, i have to agree with you usagijen to the that ayano in the anime is more hotblooded, i hope this arc would finish soon. On the other hand i saw a small preview of the short stories, the first one is about a case that involved some kind of yoma or spirits, and it takes place in ayano school, the other one is about a boy who fell in love with ayano and the third one i don’t know though. I would loved to have more info on the shorts since i think those take place after volume six lol. But my japanese is so bad, it is sad lol, i did find some covers from dragon age magazine which features Kns from back to 2005 it looks like Kns has the cover of the mag atleast twice a year.

Posted by tigerlily UNITED STATES | May 13, 2007, 1:30 pm
  7. LOL XDDD I think most people feel the same way you do, tigerlily

and about those shorts, I haven’t gotten around reading them yet… there are so far two volumes, I believe. And I think I saw an upcoming 3rd volume with Ayano, Kazuma, and the rest of the gang doing “ghost hunting” XD Would love to see that~ it’s like an “RPG” type of novel, they say.. so it must be like they’re in an ‘alternate universe’ or something =P

  8. Hey is Kaze no Stigma avalible translated in english anywhere on the net because i would definitely like to read it.
By the way where is the i want to stab kazuma girl in the character graph? or is she a very minor character.

    Posted by philixus1988 PAKISTAN | May 13, 2007, 10:14 pm
  9. @philixus1988: I don’t think any groups have translated this, but I’ve seen a forum (an open-translation project group?) who’s planning to do Kaze no Stigma :)

and regarding Misao, she’s quite a minor character, so she’s not included in the character graph anymore ^^ (I don’t think we’ll see much of her again after the battle with her next week, since her ‘boss’ is actually this Michael Harley)

Posted by usagijen PHILIPPINES | May 13, 2007, 10:28 pm
  10. Well can you tell me this forum so that i can give em a bit of a push by pleading. :D
Well good…… She is not that impressive anyway. Her drawing is not that ummmmm good. Michael Harley… Has he been elaborated upon in any way in the manga/novels

    Posted by philixus1988 PAKISTAN | May 13, 2007, 11:43 pm
  11. Lol, I’m getting quoted huh. ^_^ Remember, I don’t speak any Japanese so that was just my best guess as to what it could possibly mean based solely on your translation (and a dose of wishful thinking, I suppose) :D

I’ve been actively following Brandi’s work on FMP (being the FMP fanatic that I am), and I’d recommend the series. It’s definitely aimed at a younger audience though. Guess that’s light novels for you. (I was really surprised when I read the first chapter, as, clueless as I was, I was expecting it to be a full-blown novel) I do prefer more substantial books that offer you more material to get lost and sink into, like “The Song of Ice and Fire” series, but if you already like the FMP characters/setting you will like the novels.

    spoiler for Misao:

  12. @philixus1988: I know that Michael Harley has been elaborated in the novel… it just so happens that I haven’t read that part yet =P

@lightbringer: lol… but that’s likely what was meant in that chara graph XD

I actually have the FMP novels translated by Brandi… but… got lazy to read it =___=;;;; I’m actually somewhat thankful that the novels are ‘light novels’ (especially with KnS), else I think I’ll be going all @__@ with all the complicated stuff going on XD

I haven’t heard about “The Song of Ice and Fire” series, because I’m not quite an avid reader… (as I said, I’m quite lazy >< ). I've 'thought' about reading other books and novels, but the urge was not enough to make me put the 'thought' into action >_> but I really have to go read other stuff, other than mangas and animes-related stuff >_<

  13. eh the anime did show some1 who try to ‘hook’ ayano n friends and got kicked in ‘guys’ most painful part. perhaps u did not see clearly???

Posted by tommykuah SINGAPORE | May 14, 2007, 10:38 pm
  14. sry for double commenting, but are u going to put up the site when kaze no stigma novels are translated, because i believe tat many people are anxious waiting.
sry if i offended u in anyway >.<

Posted by tommykuah SINGAPORE | May 14, 2007, 10:41 pm
  15. @tommykuah: only that ‘kick’ was shown in the anime, nothing after that :p What I mentioned about the novel that was omitted is this part where the guys (apparently, there were two guys who Ayano kicked ‘there’) made a comeback to take revenge on Ayano. But they only suffered a worse fate, with the spins and triple axle attack Ayano gave them =P

there’s actually this group who’s planning to translate the novels, by the name of Baka-Tsuki. You can probably visit their forum and give them a push (in an encouraging way) to do it :p Once I know of groups who releases translation of the novels, I’ll certainly give that information… I just don’t like it when people ask where to download stuff.. especially stuff like these >_<

and don’t worry about it, you didn’t offend me at all =P

  16. No!!! usagijen i really love your deep frying, i like it when you give your comments, and analysis of things within ksn universe. Specially because it gives so much to comment and discuss, and beside you are doing a wonderful job here. Thanks to you and your superb summaries i don’t need to wait for the subs to understand what going on, ”waiting” doesn’t work for an addict @_@, well in any case your take on things is always appreciated, so i hope that even if the novels someday are indeed translated you would continue to give yours thoughts and analysis, for that ”BIG THANKS”.

Posted by tigerlily UNITED STATES | May 15, 2007, 4:33 am
  17. @tigerlily: hehe… I never intended to stop with this deep frying, so rest assured… LOL xD I just thought that it would be great if someone who has a lot more time in their hands than I am would really translate the KnS novels (like the ones in Baka-Tsuki perhaps), and I’d certainly impart that information when they get to release KnS stuff ;)

Rest assured that even if they really take on the project of translating KnS, I’ll still do this deep frying =P There might just be some delays later on due to other activities in my [real] life, but I won’t stop… XD KnS <3 ^^

and you’re welcome~ Glad that you enjoy this deep-frying, as I also enjoy doing it :p

  18. wow, deep fried eh… wheres the kechup lol^^

damn… shi*…. there were so many interesting parts that had been omitted in the anime eh?… theyve shouldve included more of ayano’s tsundere dere mode lol, that would be cute XD

and WTF!! is the matter w/ gonzo! why didnt they animate tha part where kazuma was giving a statement bout “the weak and the strong” FU** gonzo, that wouldve been a good scene to watch and also, could explain why kazuma was spouting words of arrogance(or insult lol) at misao

  19. Really great job in doing this. Makes it a more complete experience when you have information like this to add. Can only imagine the disaster of some guys going after Ayano when she’s in a bad mood.

  20. You got that right FlareKnight, you mess with the fire sooner or later you are bound to get burn lol, by the way i went to ANN and episode 9 if it’s correct is call Ayano’s misfortune , and if my memory serves me right this is the title of the first short story, so those this means that they are going to use the short stories material in to the anime? Mmmmm, that should be interesting lol .

Posted by tigerlily UNITED STATES | May 16, 2007, 9:27 am
  21. @tactics: I believe the essence of its flavor already comes out as you digest(’read’) it =P

not sure what came into the mind of Gonzo… coz that explanation was indeed quite a BIG point o_O I just hope they do something in the next episode to make up for this TT___TT

@FlareKnight: yeah… especially with Gonzo omitting good parts that should’ve been a MUST WATCH! *shakes fist* :P

@tigerlily: ooh~ Ayano’s misfortune is indeed the title of the first short story… interesting~ but then, as much as I’d love to see these fun short stories in anime form, I just hope they won’t sacrifice the critical plot for the sake of showing these T__T

At this point, it’s like they’re covering 1 volume of the novel in 4 episodes… with lots of stuff chopped off already… With 6 volumes out (semi-finished), that’ll make for 24 episodes… I believe it’ll be better if they show it in a separate series, like FMP Fumoffu perhaps… if they only have plans to air it for 20+ episodes >.>

Posted by usagijen JAPAN | May 16, 2007, 10:32 am
  22. You are right usagijen,i do hope too that they won’t chopped out critical parts of the novels, i’m getting the feeling down in my guts that they are going to sacrifice character development for crappy animated action @_@, lets hope not, but this is gonzo after all, so we need to be prepare, they are a hit or miss company T_T, so far as you said it, the anime would have to be 4 episodes per volume which = 24, but if they are going to include the short stories material we could get at least a 26 episode anime. So any one knows how many episodes this series is ment to be? or maybe they are planing to have shorts arcs for some of the volumes gosh ” ME THINKING BAD stuff, ME FLAMES GONZO” @__@

Posted by tigerlily UNITED STATES | May 16, 2007, 11:44 am
  23. Well Animenewsnetwork states that there will be 26 eps do that answers yur question tigerlily

  24. Seems like the seires will end up being 26 episodes though I can’t guarantee anything. I just hope they can do this right. Just glad we’ve got this blog to help us out if they cut out more important things.

Posted by FlareKnight CANADA | May 17, 2007, 4:44 am
  25. I also hope that GONZO won’t fail us this time… especially since they actually have the proper material for this one, just need the proper ‘execution’ o_O

Posted by usagijen JAPAN | May 17, 2007, 8:50 am
  26. THANK YOU VERY MUCH Som1, does this means that my speculations are correct?, Mmmmmm now lets us hope that they won’t cut down the number just because the series is not popular enough, or cause they spend all their buget on RxJ, Im not saying that sreies is not worth waching, the only problem so far, atleast for me is that our romeo is very boring as a character T_T, beside the up and down make over of the story lol. It could be Like a couple of series that i know that were schedual for 26 ep and then got cut down to 24 or 52 and ended up being 50, heck it can be worst, it could end up in an odd number. ME GOING CRAZY >.

Posted by tigerlily UNITED STATES | May 17, 2007, 9:07 am
  27. I actually decided not to watch RxJ (at least not now…), because of the fact that it’s RxJ (aka sad ending), and it’s GONZO… enough to make me sense some ‘danger’ somehow, due to uncertainties as to how things will turn out. Hence I decided not to join in the “RxJ ride” >.>

And of course in terms of the leading man, Romeo doesn’t compare a bit to KnS’s Kazuma. I’d hate RxJ sooo much if it’s going to be the cause of the lack of budget for KnS *shakes fist*

  28. OMG, you should have seen how many times I have screamed out OMG THATS SO EMBARASSING!! AYANO WHY DID YOU SAY THAT!! xD Damn, if only they had put what Ayano said about Kirika being Kazuma’s sex friend XDDDDDDDDDD OMG THAT WAS HILARIOUS!!

And in the chart, what did ‘get a hold of’ meant for Kazuma’s and Ayano’s relationship??? O__o
