Deep Frying Ookiku Furikabutte 07

Oofuri - Kanou’s spin to ball hitting
This is how you find out if your teammate is wearing a safety cup or not

Thoughts

Finally, we get to see the end of this arc. The game was quite exciting till the very end. No, Ren did not come up with a new, super powered, anti-gravity, laser-speed pitch to win the game. The Nishiura team utilized what they had, along with good strategizing, and a spot of luck to clinch the win.

Oh, Tajima ~

This episode makes up for the lack of Tajima screen time last episode! I really like how Tajima relishes playing baseball. It is just so much fun watching him and his enthusiasm is infectious. He just lights up the scene.

Tajima is often wacky, playful, simple-minded, and funny. Yet, he has such a different persona when he is on the field. Especially in the part when the bases were loaded and he was preparing for Kanou’s third pitch, he looked like a samurai then, studying his opponent carefully, not letting anything take away his focus. Also, when he came over to cheer up Ren, I grew to love him even more. Tajima, like the other characters, has layers to his personality and his reactions seem real.

It is not so hard to imagine that there could be real-life Tajima’s out there. I just wish they could somehow find themselves somewhere near here, so I can snag them XD

Kanou’s different kind of ball hitting

Kanou seriously knows his ball hitting. I was really surprised when Kanou kicked Hatake’s crotch. I would never have expected him to do that. Wasn’t it rather extreme though given that he only wanted to know if Hatake was wearing a safety cup or not?

The only plausible explanation I could think of is that since Kanou wanted to grip the forkball deeper, the ball would fall lower, thus a greater chance of hitting Hatake’s valuables. Thus by ensuring that Hatake was wearing protective gear, there would be no reason for either of them to hesitate using the forkball. Or, Kanou just wanted to carry out divine punishment on Hatake for all the times he was being an ass to Ren.

Did anyone else think that Oda was oddly quite composed throughout this scene? The others were terrified, to say the least, yet he did not find it troubling at all. Maybe he was wearing an Everlast (like Maid Marian in Robin Hood: Men in Tights)?

Kanou’s breakdown

Kanou really broke down in this episode, showing feelings of disgust and disappointment blatantly. He even cried out of frustration. I can see how Ren is truly the better pitcher between them. Ren is able to handle himself well on the mound. Though he admitted that he was scared, but he was able to control it and to not let it faze him.

Funny to think though that Kanou and Ren have been admiring each other all this time.

Hatake redeems himself

For the past several episodes, among the Mihoshi, I really disliked Hatake the most. That has all changed now. He was the first to apologize to Ren and invited him to come back to Mihoshi. He even told Ren to correct his habit of rubbing his fingers, so as not to giveaway his intention of throwing a fastball.

Nishiura’s turnaround

I was impressed with how Momoe used Kanou’s dwindling energy to turn the game back to their favor. She was keeping an eye out on the pitch count. She also took notice that Kanou stopped throwing warm-up pitches, which further confirmed her suspicions that he was nearing his limit.

It was amusing how Sakaeguchi managed to draw out 6 pitches from Kanou, mostly out of sheer luck. Abe, on the other hand, was quick to act on Hatake’s consecutive calls for fastballs. Hatake was trying to strike the batters out by going with fastballs because he knew that Momoe wanted to increase the pitch count. Abe saw through his intentions and was able use that to his advantage. Of course, with the bases loaded, it was Tajima’s time to shine.

The game captivated me until the very end. Even though it spanned several episodes, I did not think it was slow. The pacing suited it well, giving it enough time to progress through the game. They gave enough time in molding the characters, developing them, giving them personality. It also gave way to using strategies and added to the game’s realism. Here is to hoping that Oofuri will continue to excite us!

On Abe and Ren

In my first Deep Frying post, I raised the issue of Abe not wanting to give Ren a say in choosing what pitch to throw. However, in this episode, we find out that Abe is willing to listen to Ren. He even scolded Ren for not telling him sooner that Oda closed his eyes for the first pitch. So, I think this will encourage Ren to speak up whenever he feels strongly about a pitch or the situation. It was a positive step towards opening the channels of communication between catcher and pitcher.

In the last scene, Abe promised that he would dedicate the next three years in assuring that Ren will not regret his decision in coming to Nishiura. As to why he seems so bent on it, I hope, will partially be answered next episode with the introduction of Haruna, Abe’s former pitcher.

Final thoughts

Massive cheers to this episode. It was a fitting end. Nishiura is now official a team with Ren as the ace. I am expecting great things from this anime and it has not disappointed me so far. I am enjoying the baseball as much as the BL and character development. It is going to get more interesting from here with the introduction of Haruna next episode.

Did I mention that the Nishiura guys looked hot in their school uniforms? I don’t know, I guess just the image of them in white is enough to make me swoon.

Oh, here are my top 5 guys introduced thus far:
1. Tajima
2. Kanou
3. Ren/Mihashi
4. Abe
5. Hanai

Of course, this bound to change over time. So, who are your top 5?

  2. A top5, hmm… #1 is definitely clear to me, but the rest isn’t as easy to decide.

    1. Abe
    2. Tajima
    3. Mihashi
    4. Kanou
    5. Hanai

… would probably be how it goes. I would have liked to put Oda somewhere in there, but it’s probably only because I have the KanouOda pairing in mind after browsing so many fansites today… god, all these pairings…
It’s nice to see how most of the watchers seem to really love at least one character in particular. I would also surely love to snag a real-life Abe. :3

I thought the exact same thing when we got to see the Nishiura players in their school uniform, lol. Something else than the baseball gear can be nice from time to time :p

  3. @Gato LOL Chibi Mihashi and Chibi Kanou!!! Ack! Kawaii~

There’s going to be a bit of Sakaeguchi screen time next episode, so look forward to it :D

@Katapan Yeah, the pairing potential is huge!

I know, it was such a welcome change to see them in school uniforms :D Next episode, we’ll also see Mihashi and Sakaeguchi in casual wear ^^

  4. Uh, oh, I just pictured Mihashi throwing a new, super powered, anti-gravity, laser-speed pitch. Then wobbling.

Tajima is a star on the field. If it weren’t for his physique, he would be THE perfect cleanup. Tossing the bat was a total show. And it was cool. xD

Top 5 in the anime so far:
    1. Kano
    2. Abe
    3. Tajima
    4. Hanai
    5. Momokan

We haven’t seen enough of the others yet, I think. The preview characters, ack. Next week the list would look different. ♥ 1 and 2 fit just nicely seeing how I was obsessing over Abe/Kano/Abe yesterday, ha ha.

  5. Top 5 so far:
    1. Abe
    2. Tajima
    3. Izumi
    4. Hamada
    5. Takase

It’s hard to decide between Tajima and Izumi for no. 2. Tajima’s baseball mode is amazing, but personality wise, I like Izumi better. In the end Izumi gets the 3rd place because I haven’t seen enough of his emo side I guess.

  6. @iciak Yeah, I think all the lists are going to change over time. It would be interesting to see how though :D

@p-kun Izumi will go emo? lol XD

  7. That’s what I like from this show, no power ups like in captain tsubasa to win the game :p even their star players have weaknesses :)

    My top 5 are :

    Tajima Tajima Tajima Tajima Tajima

    hehe.. but seriously,
    1. Tajima
    2. Izumi
    3. Hanai
    4. Sakaeguchi
    5. Mizutani

heh, the last four might change but Tajima will always be number one, mwahahha :p I really like his personality on and off the field. Wacky, easy going, clueless at times but can be sensitive to others when time comes ;D Despite being carefree, he takes his baseball seriously, meh must be his passion or something for the sports :)

  8. 1. Abe (I love his attitude)
    2. Tajima (he’s just pure awesome!)
    3. Kanou (I love it when he gets all emotional)
    4. Ren (he’s too cute for words)
    5. Hanai (he’s totally Tajima’s fanboy LOL)

I can’t wait to see Abe’s former pitcher in the next episode. Surely, there’ll be more slashable BL moments. :D

  9. To Seleria: No, Izumi has always manage to keep his emotion in check until recently (aka. the last chapter that I’ve managed to read). I’m just wishing that I will get to see his emo side XD in future chapters because I like chars with flaws >:). All in all, I like Izumi because I feel his personality is exactly the middle of Abe and Tajima (Jun Fukuyama’s voice is a big plus too).

  10. @Yukee Yeah, I feel the same way about Tajima… wait till you see the next episode lol

Tajima spoiler for episode 08, if the animators continue to be loyal to the manga
    Show ▼

@sonteen12 Look forward to it, though Haruna should only appear for a short time near the end of the next episode :D

@p-kun One of the things that I really appreciate with Oofuri is its realism in its characters and its portrayal of baseball. It really makes it easier for the audience to connect and relate with the characters. As the say “beauty lies in the imperfections” ;)
