Hana-Kimi Goes Live This July (Again)!
Hana-Kimi Trio : Nakatsu, Sano, and Mizuki
Fuji TV has announced the Japanese live-action adaptation of the famous shoujo manga Hanazakari no Kimitachi e 「花ざかりの君たちへ」 from mangaka Hisaya Nakajo. The Hana-Kimi J-drama is set to start hitting the airwaves on July 3, 2007 (Tuesday) at 9PM. Horikita Maki (Nobuta wa Produce, Kurosagi), Oguri Shun (Hana Yori Dango, Detective Conan, Densha Otaku, Gokusen) and Ikuta Toma (Hana Yori Dango 2, Akihabara@deep, Asuka e, Soshite Mada Minu Ko e) will play the leading roles.

Plot Summary
The story revolves around Mizuki Ashiya, a teenage Japanese girl living in America, who sees Izumi Sano on a televised high jump competition one day. She becomes a fan and eventually decides to transfer to Japan to see Sano. Armed with her extreme fandom, she manages to enroll herself in Osaka Gakuen, Sano’s school. The only problem? Osaka Gakuen is an all-boys school, so she needs to hide the fact that she is girl. With a cross-dressing lead in-love with a snobbish athlete, add a soccer player who thinks he is gay because of his attraction to supposedly-boy-Mizuki, and you have a formula bound to get comedic results!

usagijen: OMGz!!! Finally! A Hana-Kimi J-Drama!!! Oh how much I’ve been waiting for this to happen!! To think that my wish (and MANY other people’s as well) has finally been granted!!! I think I can die now… Err… never mind I said that…
Anyways, as I was saying… (ahem) * goes back to raving mode * This makes me a really happy HanaKimi fangirl!! And now I’ll finally be able to see Mizuki and Sano come to life (without having to bear the agony of watching Hana-Kimi butchered in the so called Taiwanese drama with the horrendous Mizuki!! * cries * -> expressing sadness over the previous drama, and happiness over the new drama)!!!
Wai~ I still can’t believe it…!! I can’t contain my happiness!! And I see many exclamation points as well! I think I’m hallucinating…! but still… OMGz!!!

This is just great news! I am an avid fan of J-drama and with a story like Hana-Kimi it has the potential to be a fun show. Just the thought of it makes me smile very happily that it scares me. Hana-Kimi is just my cup of tea, a romantic-comedy in a school setting (* ahem * an ALL-BOYS school). This show is screaming shoujo, which happens to be one of my favorite genres.
I saw an episode of the Taiwanese version. The male leads were played by Wu Zun and Jiro Wang (Fahrenheit), while the female lead was Ella Chen (S.H.E). I really did not think that Ella was fit for the role. The first episode was quite a pain to sit through. The acting was just exaggerated and uninspired. I did not find Ella funny at all and I was just irked looking at her. Admittedly, the guys were hot, but they too could not deliver the same feel and charm of their manga counterparts.
I am really glad that a Japanese adaptation is coming out. Please… please… do justice to the manga.

Ooh, thanks for the great news! I just read volume 14 a few days ago (meh, the French publication is too slow), and I was still thinking how an anime would be fun, especially after learning that the drama CDs had such a great cast that could be reused (Houko Kuwashima, Kentarou Itou, Hiroyuki Yoshino, Takehito Koyasu, etc.)
I’m not a very big drama fan (actually, I’ve only seen one series…), but I suppose I’ll be giving this one a try, especially since I’ll have lots of free time when it’ll be airing. Summer shouldn’t be boring this year.
Now I can’t help but wonder if they’ll be able to make Mizuki look like a boy. Maybe a good haircut will do the trick?

Hana-Kimi is an absolute favorite. Woo HOO!
Oddly, I haven’t sought out the scanlations. I like to wait for each volume as it comes out every other month. Usually I’m a fool for spoilers. (but I’m not anxious about Sano/Mizuki, so that’s probably why)
I don’t know the actor cast as Mizuki, but at least she looks the part. Mizuki is quite cute and fairly girlish in the manga, and makes an overly-pretty boy, which sets up the comedy. The actor playing Mizuki in the Taiwanese drama — a little too butch looking, which is otherwise fine! but not the plot point for this story. So I just didn’t bother with it.
I really like Oguri Shun, but gosh, I’ve seen him in so many things by now that I’d kinda like to see someone else in Sano’s role, you know? HYD1, HYD2, Gokusen, Azumi 1 & 2, etc. etc. — dude gets around! OTOH, he’s a good actor and quite nice to look at, so I won’t complain too much. Heh.
I infer you all will be blogging it? ^_^ Very much looking forward to it, thanks for the alert. I had no idea this was in the works!
(If they ever *do* make an anime from it, I will truly lose it. I love the artwork more than anything else.)
I might actually watch this, for once, although I generally do not watch live-action Japanese television (except for some films). But they better compress some of the story, especially in the second half. I like HanaKimi, at times I couldn’t get enough of the story, but it just drags on and on sometimes. Especially Nakatsu’s subplots, and ESPECIALLY all those soccer woes of his. God knows I could care less.
(Yeah, I know, I’m weird for being a guy but liking stories about girls cross-dressing in boys’ dormitories, and other shoujo mangas. I’m a hopeless romantic when I’m not in my nihilist cynic mode. So sue me.)
@Katapan Yeah, an anime would be great! It would be lovely to see the beautiful character designs. If BONES would animate it, it would really make me so happeh! Just look how well they did with Ouran

know what, I’ve been so affected by the taiwanese drama that I really wanted to see a Japanese drama to do some justice for HanaKimi… and in the process, I actually forgot that I want HanaKimi to become an anime all the more!!! LOL =P
it’ll be great if there will be plans later on for an animation, especially if the seiyuus they’ll be having are the same ones in the drama cd~ yay for Kuwashima Houko, Itou Kentarou, Koyasu Takehito and Miki Shinichirou! =P

I am so excited! I stumbled across the wikipedia page for Shun Oguri and when I scrolled down, Hana-Kimi was there! I felt really giddy, and I think he will do really well as Sano!
I actually forced myself to watch all of the Taiwanese Hana-Kimi….I thought that Ella was kinda cute when she wasn’t talking, but she talked ALOT and it made her look like a monkey….so the only part I really liked in that series was when the Nakatsu character was speaking engrish.
jdramas tend to be sooo much better than taiwanese dramas (from what I’ve seen, which isn’t a ton so I’m not really an expert or anything). Like with Hana Yori Dango and Meteor Garden: even though the storyline of MG stayed closer to the manga, the acting and emotion in HYD was much more realistic. I think that maybe the Taiwanese dramas try too hard to be goofy like the mangas, and they just come out overacted and irritating.
that’s not to say I don’t like any Taiwanese dramas. I actually think that MARS (based on the manga by Fuyumi Soryo) as a whole was very well done, despite Barbie Hsu getting on my nerves with her irritating ‘acting’ style. (As an aspiring actress, it really bothers me when I see actors/actresses who look the same or whose voices sound the same whether they are sad, angry, or happy.) I will admit that she did have some good moments in the series, but without Vic Zhou’s amazing portrayal of Ling/Rei i would have hated the show.
I wish that other Taiwanese dramas could have the same quality, and could catch my attention in the same way that MARS did. I have yet to find another really good one. The fact that i had to force myself to watch the Taiwanese Hana-Kimi is pretty upsetting for me considering how much I love the manga…
Now that I’ve rambled on and on (if you actually read this whole rant I commend you and send you Invisible Candies of Deliciousness for your effort! a gold star for you!) i will get to my point, which is this: that I truly hope this new Hana-Kimi will contain more of the realistic emotion and good quality acting that I’ve come to expect from Japanese series.

@Jessica: The taiwanese version adapted it from a Japanese manga called Hanakimi.
I read the manga back when i was in high school, 5-6 years ago. I read it because at first i thought it was shounen ai kind of manga. It was fun until i knew that Sano knew that Mizuki was a girl right from the start *______* If only he didn’t knew, it’d have been so gheyyyy.. LOL… I like Hanakimi because it has some mild hints of shounen ai. For example, the teacher (i forgot his name..).. And Shuichi Nakatsu still likes Mizuki even though he knew Mizuki is a guy (although yeah Mizuki is actually girl..) ROFL!
@Jessica: wow… you’re like the first one I know who liked the HanaKimi taiwanese drama… or it’s perhaps you haven’t read the manga yet so you didn’t have high expectations for it (which is also good). But I suggest you read the manga, and you’ll see how much they butchered the ‘original material’ ><

random visit! i just found out about the live action and im glad im not the only one who feels so happy about it. i was twitching from pure happiness that my wish came true lol. hana kimis my #1 favorite manga of all time and it was painful watching the taiwanese version of it, but i sucked it up since i figured it was the only thing i could watch. im actually really shocked at the casting too esp that i know most of the main leads. i love maki. im a big fan of shun as rui … and i know hes a good actor but he didnt fit my image of sano. hopefully hell prove me wrong. i didnt think toma fit nakatsu at all. and im disappointed with the rest of the casting. nakao isnt as girly cute as he should be i think. and the actor for umeda … totally doesnt scream beautiful gay doctor at all >
OMG!! A bit late but better than never. I am soooo PSYCHED at the people playing the 3 main characters..I think Ikuta Toma and Horikita Maki suits the characters (from what I can see in the pic.) I’m a lil iffy on Oguri Shun though…Maybe that particular pic of him doesn’t do him justice?
At the moment, they’re showing the Taiwanese adaptation of HanaKimi and from the get go I totally hated Ella in the role of Mizuki…There’s something missing..she doesn’t bring that touch of feminity that was so evident in the manga and she really didn’t look the part..not to be mean, but that mustache shadow on her upper lip was off putting. Her version of Mizuki was loud, brash and not kawaii at all. I think they picked Ella for the role because of her tomboyish looks and nothing else. No charm or sweetness of the manga there in her potrayal.
The actor who played Mizuki’s brother was even worse…Totally didn’t look like a doctor at all…he looked too young for the role.
But I did kinda like the guy who played Umeda. He sorta grew on me. LOL. I think that was the only thing I liked about that particular version of HanaKimi..

Well there already was a live-action adaptation, but it was in Chinese. Only fifteen episodes long, but hilarious nonetheless.
I can’t wait for it to come out! Sadly, I’ll have to wait even longer for subs, but it’s worth it. I did see the other version. I love Ella, but she wasn’t right for the part. She looked too much like a boy, if that makes any sense at all.
@joy: casting Ella for Mizuki was really a no-no… she fits the ‘boy’ part, but takes away much of the femininity Mizuki’s supposed to have ~___~

i liked the taiwanese drama of hana kimi..even though the girl that played mizuki didn’t act very well she still brought excitement to the character… and you know i read the book and they didn’t cut off that much parts
and the serious ended at around book 9… && there gonna have a Hana Kimi 2 which is gonna be a continuation from where they left off…!!

I’m sorry, but Ella looks like a pig. :0 Mizuki was NOT supposed to look like that! And I’m no big fan of Maki’s either, but still she’s better than Ella. I have been waiting patiently for FOUR YEARS now for Japan to make a drama of Hanakimi, ever since reading this manga in highschool. And I’m disappointed that they didn’t cast Ueto Aya as Mizuki. I agree with another user, I’ve seen Oguri Shun too many times already. I wanted a newer face for Izumi. Anyways, can’t complain. It’s my favourite manga of all time!

I would just like to say that the Taiwanese version is more faithful to the manga than the Japanese version.

@akame_tamaka: there are two drama adaptations of Hanakimi, a Taiwanese and a Japanese version. The taiwan drama aired quite some time ago, a few years before *this* Hanakimi =3
I’ve tried watching this a few times, and i just can’t get into it. I’m a huge fan of the manga, but the characters in this series just dont have the appeal the manga ones do. The Doc in this just plain ugly not to mention totaly creepy.
None of the other characters have the feel of the manga either. Sure you can’t do a full cross over, but it’s like they just took the premise of the manga, and pulled the rest out of the *beep*
What this series really needs is an anime, with 2 seasons at least.
@Tiamat: I actually think it’s necessary to watch the Hanakimi jdrama, without comparing it with the manga. It’s sooo different, especially Sano’s personality, and most of the major events that supposedly happen.
The Jdrama is fun and enjoyable, as it is, and is not meant to be taken seriously, imo. I mean, the show doesn’t even take itself seriously, most of the time o_O
I also think HanaKimi needs an anime, that would be the best adaptation it would have.

I have seen both the Japanese and Taiwanese versions of the drama. And though the Japanese version has a better overall ending Oguri Shun is entirely too moody, and Maki is really too pretty to fool anyone.
Also the only REAL thing the Japanese version has in common with the manga is the characters names. They basically rewrote the ENTIRE plot. In comparison the Taiwanese version followed the plot very well and the actors were much more true to the characters they portrayed. If I had to pick, even with the ending the Taiwan version left us with I would still pick it, hands down!
I’ve seen both drama versions and I would pick the Taiwanese version hands down over the Japanese one. Oguri Shun was entirely too moody to be Sano, and Maki was too pretty to fool anyone, even with a haircut. Many of the serious issues were completely overlook in favor of plot modification.
In contrast the Taiwanese version followed the manga extremely well, with very few changes to the original plot. True the expressions of both RuiXi and XiuYi, Mizuki and Nakatsu respectively, were sometimes exaggerated more than necessay, but if you think about it still very true to the way it was portrayed in the manga.
Although the Jdrama does a better job of wrapping up at te end, I would still say the Tdrama was much better overall.

But I’ve heard from many sources that it was indeed faithful to the manga. I’m hoping an anime will be out, so we can really see the manga spring into life! D:

uhm people… please don’t use this as a battleground for the Hanakimi JP vs Hanakimi TW war =___= Despite showing favor to the JP version, I’d have to say it’s nothing like the manga. It’s just pure wacky fun. Hanakimi TW has a better story overall. But then choosing Ella as Miyuki is just ugh… a not so good decision. That is all, thank you.

it is so obvious, the war isnt about Hana Kimi Taiwan or the Japanese Versions, this is all about the same Drama of Pinoy Losers about the Kapuso and Kapamilya Wars! and that just sucks! Common’ people be fare with the actors of the Hana Kimi Series… Please dont be such bitches! But to tell you frankly, I’ve already seen the two versions, the Taiwanese version is much appealing than the other, the chemistry is there and the story revolved around the characters, not the other way around, the Japanese version is a bit shallow… Stop the fuckin’ K to K wars! that is not healthy and i find it a little Cheap!

as for the Japanese version, it was actually meant to be shallow. It was made for pure lighthearted wacky fun, not something you’ll take seriously like the Taiwan version.
