Ookiku Furikabutte – 10

Happy birthday Mihashi, Nishiura’s new set of pitchers and catcher, Abe’s 3-year promise, Shiga’s power, Tajima strikes again, upcoming summer tournament, self-made surprise party, personality breakthroughs, and Nishiura’s new captains in…

Ookiku Furikabutte 10 – Steadily 「ちゃくちゃくと」

Mihashi wants to make a good battery with Abe, knowing that he can pitch if it is with him. Momoe interrupts his thoughts and asks what they need in order to achieve success. Abe and Momoe both want another pitcher, breaking Mihashi’s heart. Since Nishiura will be having practice matches, doing two games per session, thus, the need for a relief pitcher.

Momoe and Abe quickly shoot down Mihashi’s idea of pitching for the whole two games. There is no way that Mihashi can manage to throw 300-400 pitches. In addition, a big summer baseball tournament is coming up. The schedule will be tight and unforgiving. Momoe stresses that this tournament will not be like middle school and it will be a big mistake to think that they will get by with just one pitcher.

Tajima swiftly springs into action and remedies Mihashi’s insecurities using a marker. He draws number “1”, the ace’s number, on Mihashi’s jersey. Mihashi gushes as he lovingly stares on his newly vandalized baseball uniform.

Momoe appoints Hanai and Oki as relief pitchers. Though Oki did not write it in his profile, he has more experience as a pitcher compared to Hanai. Momoe then moves on to choosing another catcher. With everyone else, except Abe, lacking experience as a catcher, Momoe offers Tajima the position. Tajima seems to fit the profile of a catcher to a tee, with his strong throwing arm, exceptional baseball sense, and his good rapport with Mihashi. Momoe describes the excitement and thrill that comes with being a catcher, blinding Tajima into agreeing.

Momoe helps Tajima into his catcher’s gear, who instantly takes a liking to it and comments on how easily he is able to move. Momoe hands him his mitt and terrorizes him to make sure he takes good care of it. Meanwhile, Abe notices Mihashi’s weak pitching and goes over to him to discuss it. Abe finds out that Mihashi is bothered that there are other pitchers. He then explains that it is not because Mihashi is not reliable, it is just that during practice matches they will need two pitchers. Oki and Hanai will also come in handy when fatigue starts to set in on Mihashi.

Mihashi’s real worry, though, is that he would not be a good pitcher without Abe. A smile crawls up to Abe’s face, realizing that this is the first time Mihashi spoke his mind. Abe boldly states that for the next three years, he will not get sick or injured. If Mihashi is on the mound, he will definitely be the catcher. However, Mihashi is not allowed to get sick either.

After practice, Momoe lets the boys decide on who should be the team captain. They unanimously vote Hanai. Everyone agrees that he is hard working, confident, possesses leadership qualities, and does things without asking anything in return—a true unsung hero. Cheers echo as Hanai reluctantly take on this responsibility. Hanai chooses Abe and Sakaeguchi as assistant captains. First order of business as new captain, Hanai leads off the team shouting, “Let’s do our best for the summer tournament! Nishiura!”

After watching Nishiuro catch his first fly ball, Mihashi bumps into Shinouka. Knowing that today is Mihashi’s birthday, she greets him right away. With practice over, everyone gathers around Momoe. She expresses her concern on the boys’ studies with the exams fast approaching. Tajima protests on her sudden interest in their grades. She tries to convey the importance of studying and dramatizes the dangers of getting red marks on one’s report card. Finally, she asks who are in danger of failing, to which both Mihashi and Tajima proudly admit in unison. She clutches their heads, telling them that they will not be allowed to compete with poor grades.

The boys discuss the subjects they need help on, when Mihashi invites them over to his house to study. Mihashi assures that he can accommodate all 10 people, making the others realize that he must be living in a big house and is rich. Mihashi quickly informs his mother of his plans.

After reaching Mihashi’s home, Hanai leads the others in studying when they hear a high-pitched voice. Mihashi’s mom just arrived. He makes a quick exit to meet her. Tajima overhears that it is Mihashi’s birthday while his mother was showing him his cake. Soon after, the rest of the team finds out. Mihashi’s mom tries hard to contain her snickering over Mihashi, who unknowingly tried to produce his own surprise party. Tajima breaks the tension and asks everyone to join him in celebrating Mihashi’s birthday. Sakaeguchi offers to help in the preparation while Hanai courteously asks Mihashi’s mom to join them.

Shortly after dinner, Abe requests to see Mihashi’s practice area. Mihashi warns Abe that he might be disappointed, though Abe thinks otherwise. The others take a good look at Mihashi’s pitching target. Before, Mihashi reveals, he used a board, but after switching from softball to hardball, it was destroyed.

Abe tells Mihashi to pitch as he instructs it. He calls Tajima to observe. Mihashi obliges and manages to throw as dictated, demonstrating his nine-section strike zone. Abe asks if Tajima could do what Mihashi did. Tajima could not, as it is the product hard work. He turns around and shouts, “Mihashi! Let’s go! To the Japan National High School Baseball Tournament!” After gathering enough courage, Mihashi tells them that he wants to go.

Sakaeguchi gleefully acknowledges that this is the first time that Mihashi did not back down and not say that it was impossible. Everyone recalls the time when Momoe whacked Mihashi with a bat for being so negative. Abe also reflects that at the time, he thought that it was impossible for Mihashi to change. Just as long as the pitcher followed his lead, played as instructed, his personality need not matter. However, his outlook has changed since then.

As the others circle around Mihashi, Abe walks over to the target and looks back:

“That guy’s hard work, I want to put it all to good use.”
“I want Mihashi to win!”

Thoughts

I give this episode my two thumbs up! This episode was just a lot of fun and bubbly. You can’t help, but enjoy yourself. I found myself smiling a lot throughout. Also, there were some major breakthroughs on Mihashi’s personality and some new developments with the Nishiura team. Not to mention my favorite characters, Tajima and Momoe, got to strut their stuff.

I don’t think I have any complaints with this episode. It stayed close to the manga, there were some omissions, but were very minor. It’d be best for you guys to just download and see for yourself. There will be a Deep Frying post on this episode. It will include a short analysis on Tajima as a catcher, and why I think Momoe is the Yaoi Queen (I bow to her).

BL moments

  • Mihashi wanting to make a good battery with Abe
  • Abe fighting hard to resist Tajima’s charm (jersey-marking scene)
  • Abe’s promise to always be Mihashi’s catcher! (ack… I totally squirmed at this point when I read it in the manga)
  • Hanai x Tajima battery
  • Mihashi’s fangirling cheering when Sakaeguchi was appointed assistant captain
  • Mihashi and Tajima’s synchronized hand-raising
  • Mihashi inviting his harem the boys over to his house
  • The boys celebrating Mihashi birthday :3
  • The boys sharing plates together (particularly Tajima licking Hanai’s plate)
  • Abe’s fervent wish to help Mihashi win
  • Abe ripping away Mihashi from his harem

  1. More BL moments lol? Anyway I thought Mihashi showed how he is really socially awkward, despite the improvements already. What does he do in class? There are no baseball team mates in class like Abe or Tajima right?

  2. @tj han Of course, this series never runs out of BL moments XD It wouldn’t be half as fun without it.

Yeah, it is quite curious that it was the first time he ever had friends over for his birthday. It is funny and sad at the same time. I am not sure if he is classmates with any of his teammates. It was not mentioned in the manga nor in the anime thus far.

  3. What?! No mention of Tajima looking around Mihashi’s bed asking where the porn is. =D Or are you saving that for the Deep Frying post?

  4. @tj han Mihashi is classmates with Tajima and Izumi.

Abe dragging Mihashi away to the bushes was no BL, it was a prelude to porn. xD

But even so my favorite scene has to be Mihashi’s mom calling his name and the boys wondering what animal it could be. I had found it very far-fetched in the manga, because I couldn’t imagine regular (i.e. not panicked etc.) human voice that would sound like a crying cat. The anime left me collecting my jaw from the floor.

  5. I really think this episode has such a bad animation. Characters look weird and ugly for most non-close up scenes. Izumi and Oki suffer terribly X(.

@tj han and seleria: Each char’s class is mentioned in the manga cover sleeve. Most Nishiuras are closer to their classmates than other teammates. The most easiest ones to pick up from the anime are:
Mihashi-Tajima-Izumi (and Hamada) -> Mihashi communicates well with the other three (much less stuttering), Tajima handles Mihashi well, Izumi handles Tajima well
Abe-Hanai -> they sat together in the bus going to the camp despite all other empty seats
Sakaeguchi-Suyama -> in ep 10, the one who told everybody that Suyama had birthday in April was Sakaeguchi.

  6. you know i love abe/mihashi pairing but after seeing haruna and abe together I love haruna/abe MORE than abe/mihashi … don’t hate me for that * runs from abe/mihashi fans* its just that i think its weird yet cool seeing abe as uke with haruna. Haruna is really hot too so….

  7. oh momoe is frikin awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  8. @leongsh Lol… Initially, I didn’t give much attention to that part with Tajima. I’m going to take a second look on that. XD Thanks!

Also, nice to see back again around here! :D

    @iciak

Abe dragging Mihashi away to the bushes was no BL, it was a prelude to porn.

    ROFLMAO!!!

When I was reading the manga about the part when Ren’s mom was calling him, I kinda pictured it out like how the anime depicted it. Though, I couldn’t imagine that the mom’s voice would be that high-pitched lol.

In the manga, they all thought it was a bird of sorts. Tajima exclaimed that it must be a huge bird. XD

@p-kun Hmm… In terms of animation, I think I’ve gotten used to the not-so-stellar quality of wide shots. I did not really notice it being worst than usual.

Again, thanks again for the info on who is classmates with who. I think I need to compile all these extra information you guys share, so other people can easily refer to it. Someday… ^^

@claudius It was fun seeing Haruna x Abe. Though, your favorite couple may change again come next episode.

  9. Wow! This episode was so much fun! New captain, Mihashi’s birthday(and his harem), and more Abe/Mihashi moments. ^^
It was good to see that Hanai is like an all-around baseball player. He’s good at batting and also at pitching, he makes the perfect captain for the team!

Seleria, I was wondering if you’ll be willing to translate the episodes line-by-line? If not, that’s alright. But if you can, I can easily add english subtitles to the raw episodes. The fansub team is taking really long with their releases, the fans are eager to watch more subbed episodes.

  10. @sonteen12 – I know the project leader for the fansubbing of Oofuri over at [Saizen]. The translation is mostly done. It’s the nitty gritty of qc (i.e. quality control) and typesetting (the translated signs, etc) that’s holding them up. The [Saizen] project leader and team are quite fastidious in their qc as they want to issue the best that they can.

    Posted by leongsh | June 18, 2007, 7:16 pm
  11. From the [Saizen] project status page:
    04: RC2 encode
    05: RC1 encode
    06: QC Apply
    07: QC Apply
    08: Timing

    RC = Release Candidate

The next few episodes will come out shortly. Do take note that the widescreen version is 2 episodes behind, i.e. the latest widescreen episode broadcast is Episode 8.

  12. @sonteen12 Thanks for dropping by :D Yup, I really liked this episode. I liked how we see the guys bonding and growing as a team and as friends. It reminded me a lot of my high school days, just hanging out with my buddies with all the teasing and fun-natured joking.

About subbing this, I would have to decline. I’m really sorry. I am not confident in my Japanese skills. Time is also an issue. I am quite swamped at work right now and barely have time to do work on the site (I haven’t started on my Deep Frying post x__X). Subbing is just a totally different beast from summarizing and blogging.

Also, as leongsh has mentioned, there is already a group working on this. I haven’t actually watched the English subs yet, but if they are taking this much time in doing QA work then it must be good. I would prefer quality over speed. It just only means that they are giving the time and attention that Oofuri deserves. ^^

All I can contribute right now to the Oofuri community are these summaries (and major pimpage). They are not much, but I hope they can somehow quell the fans’ hunger till the subs get released.

Anyway, much thanks for the offer ^^

@leongsh Thanks for the release update ^^ Give our love to Saizen for subbing this.

  13. Hello, I’m a new person posting here! I got directed to this page from… uh… I think one of Iciak’s LJ posts when I was reading my Friends page. I’m still fairly new in the Oofuri fandom (kind of) but I read the first chapter when Entropy scanlated it. It took me a while to actually make time to watch the anime, though.

By the way, my favorite part(s) of this episode:
    - Tajima and Mihashi enthusiastically raising their hands (as if they’re proud of their failure in class, haha)
    - Mihashi inviting everyone to his house
    - His mom thinking that Ren wants to produce his own surprise party (lol this just made me laugh)

Anyways some class information for the teammates on Nishiura (including the lesser-known members):
    Mihashi: 1-9
    Abe: 1-7
    Tajima: 1-9
    Hanai: 1-7
    Sakaeguchi: 1-1
    Mizutani: 1-7
    Suyama: 1-1
    Oki: 1-3
    Izumi: 1-9
    Nishihiro: 1-3

    Shinooka: 1-7 (team manager girl)

I would have included the cheerleaders’ classes too but I was lazy. XD.

  14. I lol’d at your harem jokes, those were great!

I really liked this episode too, it was really heartwarming especially the #1 on the jersey scene, it made me genuinely smile. I liked the character development, seeing Mihashi’s maturation is genuine and realistic, hopefully as he matures, he’ll realize his true potential in baseball, it just seems like his shyness is holding him back. He’s an awesome character besides his faults, just make him more special and likable.

  15. @leongsh Thanks for the info on the fansub group. ^^ I think we can wait for the high quality subbed episodes then.

@Seleria Thanks for the nice reply. I feel greatful enough that you’re doing summaries for this series, so keep up the neat work! :D

    Posted by sonteen12 | June 20, 2007, 7:58 am
  16. Sorry for the late reply DX Been really busy at work and finishing the Deep Frying post.

@Chrissie Thank you for posting this information and welcome to Scrumptious Anime! :D I liked a lot of scenes in this episode including those you’ve mentioned ^^

I am quite interested with the cheerleaders, I took a peek in the manga and am quite excited to see it animated.

@Chris Glad you found the jokes amusing :D

Yes, Mihashi’s faults make him easily to relate to. I appreciate how the character development is slow and steady. We see subtle changes and small improvements every episode, which mirrors real life because we can’t change ourselves in an instant. :D

@sonteen12 You’re very welcome ^^ I’ll try my best to continue making the summaries and hope you guys will keep reading and sending feedback.

  18. What does bl mean!??!?! D:

    Posted by ARAF | August 6, 2007, 5:03 am
  19. @ARAF

BL is the shorthand of the term “boy’s love” — aka homosexuality, male/male pairings ~

Yaoi actually refers to a PWP sense, The English letters form an acronym of the Japanese phrase ???????????????? (yama nashi, ochi nashi, imi nashi), often translated into English as, “no climax, no punch line, no meaning,” or as the catchphrase, “No peak, no point, no problem.”

as for the yaoi v bl usage —

    Yaoi vs. BL

Contrary to the belief of many English-speaking fans, “yaoi” is not the primary name of this genre in Japan. Originally much of the material was called “june,” a name derived from a publication of the same name that published male/male tanbi romances, stories written for and about the worship of beauty using particularly flowery language. Eventually “june” died out in favor of “BL” or “boys love,” which remains the most common name.

Though originally a Japanese portmanteau, fans in Japan have only recently started using “yaoi” as a name of the boys love genre, usually in the form of 801. “801″ is derived from cell phone text messaging, where the “8″ key hosts the kana ? (ya), 0 is “o,” and 1 is “i.” For example, an Internet manga called Tonari no 801-chan, about a guy who wants to date a girl who turns out to be a BL fan, has become quite popular of late.

These Japanese definitions are somewhat different than what is common in English-speaking fans online, where “yaoi” usually refers to hardcore BL and the term “shounen-ai” for non-hardcore BL. However, Japan does not utilize this distinction. In Japan, “shounen-ai” refers to an obsolete shoujo subgenre that told stories of prepubescent boys in relationships ranging from the platonic to the romantic. “Shounen-ai” can also be used to refer to an adult who likes young boys– a pedophile.[2]
