Episode 01 starts off with Dante going into an alley at night and walking into a bar. Once inside, a bartender asks him what he wants. Dante then ordered for a strawberry sundae. The bartender tells him that he’s in a bar and not in some kind of kid’s place. Dante mentioned that he’s heard some rumors about a pub nearby that takes people’s lives. While he’s talking to the bartender, three men are playing cards at a table behind him and overhears the conversation. One of the men asked about a royal straight flush and after the man puts down the cards in his hand he immediately dashed towards Dante. Dante, with gun in hand, pointed it towards the man and BANG! The bullet went flying straight into the man’s forehead. Just before the man hit the floor he turned into a demon and attacked Dante. The other men changed into demons and attacked Dante. Dante shot the two demons and the one he shot earlier jumped at him and bit his arm. Suddenly, his sword dropped from one of the windows and he uses it to finish the two demons. He then walks towards the door and thrusts the sword through it killing the bartender. As Dante walks out of the place, the felled bartender turned into a demon and lunged at him. But he quickly turned around and finished the monster off with his gun.
Back at the Devil May Cry, Dante is on the phone ordering a pizza while reading a magazine. There’s a girl walking around the place. A man named Morrison tells Dante that the girl is Patty Lowell, the illegitimate daughter of a syndicate boss, and she is to inherit a fortune left by her dad. He has been commissioned to escort the girl to their estate by 6pm the next day. Dante refuses to babysit, but is forced to carry out the mission after losing in a coin toss. Before they head out, Morrison gives Dante a guitar case reminding him that there’s a live show.
While Dante is driving, Patty tells him that she will come and see his live show next time. But he goes on to say that his show is restricted. She then asks if the girl in the photo she saw back at Dante’s desk would come? She then talks about his car and how dirty and empty the car looks. While she’s babbling about stuff, Dante hears a voice in his head saying that it will come for the girl. He then pulls the girls cap down to cover her eyes and he pulls out his gun. He then shoots a demon hanging at the side of a truck in front of them. After the girl pulled the cap off the truck was still coming at them and Dante was able to dodge it. She shouted at Dante how dangerous it was not knowing about the demon he killed just a while ago.
In a mansion, two men are discussing about a letter that tells about Patty Lowell inheriting the fortune. If she turns up by 6pm the next day then she inherits the fortune. It turns out that they are brothers of the syndicate boss and they wanted to get the fortune for themselves.
On board a train, Dante notices Patty is looking at a picture on her necklace. She told him that it’s a picture of her mom but she doesn’t remember anything about her. A man passes by and compliments how beautiful the woman in the picture is. He asks if he could sit with them. Dante goes on to tell that there are a lot of seats available in the train but Patty cordially invited him to sit down. Dante warned him that he cannot assure his safety. After a brief pass through a tunnel, Patty was shocked to see the man beside her fall over dead. Some of the passengers went to look and an officer asked Dante what happened. He explains that it took the train 10 seconds to pass through the tunnel and during that time there were only 3 other people on their side of the train excluding him, the girl and the dead guy. None of the people could have done it so he added that there was one more, a monster. As the train is about to enter another tunnel, Patty looks up and saw the monster looking through the window. Dante quickly finishes it off with several gunshots and after the train was out of the tunnel Patty only saw some broken glass left. It turned out that the dead man was the monster itself and Dante shot it one last time before they head out of the train.
Once again at the mansion, the brothers play chess while one looks at a painting. They discuss how they would split the fortune just in case Patty doesn’t arrive.
Dante asks a man for the cheapest room they can check into for the night. Patty on the other hand is looking at a poster of an opera singer on the wall. She shouts out that it’s her mom. She asks the caretaker of the place where she can find this woman. Dante reminds her that her mom already died. Before they go to sleep, she tells Dante that she heard that her mom didn’t die but disappeared. She doesn’t really care about the inheritance and her only purpose for wanting it is so that she could buy stuff for her friends in the orphanage. But what she really wants is to be with her parents. She thinks that it might be weird but Dante tells her that everyone would want the same thing.
Patty wakes up in the middle of the night after hearing a singing voice and leaves. Dante asks the owner of the place if he knew where she went. Dante then shoots the poster on the wall revealing it to be a large moth. He persuades the owner to take her to where Patty is. While they went out to search for Patty, Dante asks who hired him to go after her but got nothing from him as he knew too little. Although Dante did know that someone would be greatly disappointed if Patty was able to obtain the inheritance.
Somewhere in town Patty enters an opera hall and sees the lady she saw on the poster. She then ran towards her thinking that she was her mother. Patty hugged her but when she looked up the lady was actually a demon. A backdrop of a ruined area fell to the stage along with several monsters. As they are about to kill Patty, Dante comes right in time to save her and shoots the monsters. With some still left alive they jumped towards Patty but Dante stopped them with a kick. He shoots one of the lines holding the other backdrop and used it to block her view from his bloody fight with the rest of the demons. All she sees are silhouettes of Dante kicking some serious demon @$$. The owner sneaked up behind her and tells her that she must die so that he can get a huge reward. A shot went through the backdrop as Dante wouldn’t want him to get near the girl. Blood spilled throughout the stage after the fight.
The next day, the brothers rejoice as the time is up and the girl is still nowhere in sight. Suddenly a guest arrived. A blonde woman in red entered the room and introduced herself as Patty Lowell. The brothers are shocked as they are expecting a little girl. She then explains that the girl is a fake so that she won’t be suspected as the real Patty Lowell. She wants the preparations to be done immediately for the inheritance. One of the older brothers tell her that she’s late since she arrived a few seconds after 6pm. But she tells her that the letter says that she should arrive within a week after her dad’s death which was 6:28pm. The older brother then transformed into a huge demon striking the other two brothers and went charging towards the woman. Dante suddenly came busting through the door and stopped the demon. It seems the woman was the one who hired Dante to protect the girl. With the demon still alive, Dante opened his guitar case which actually contained his sword. He uses it along with his guns to finish off the demon. As he was about to leave with the girl, the woman insisted that she adopt the child to atone for what she did.
Back at the Devil May Cry, we see Patty talking with Morrison. It seems she left the woman and she brought with her truckloads of clothes and toys and dumped it all in Dante’s place. Dante just came out of the shower and was expecting for his strawberry sundae to be ready. Morrison points towards Patty who just finished eating his strawberry sundae.
ED Sequence:

Thoughts:
Forgive me if there were some mistakes in the write-up as I had very limited resources at hand. Found only one sub but it was crappy since they didn’t quite do a good job on the translations. I had to figure out most of the dialogues and honestly, my japanese kinda suck.
Storywise, the first episode was less than what I expected from Devil May Cry. I’ve played all the games in the series and was sort of looking forward to a story similar to the game (the first one to be specific). Looks to me they’ll be going with Dante being as a mercenary and doing “odd” jobs for each episode rather than stick to a single story line. But, it’s still too soon to tell so I’m giving it a few more episodes to see what happens later on. Animation though is quite good with Madhouse handling the production. You can see from the screenshots that the quality is really high especially when it comes to the fight scenes and there are a lot of them. They even got the details on Ebony & Ivory right. For fans of DMC you might recognize the writings engraved on the gun.
I have no idea why they put in Patty into the story. This episode showed more about the girl than Dante so I’m guessing we’ll be seeing more of her in the anime. Not really sure what her purpose will be other than to add some loli factor into the show. And what the heck is up with the strawberry sundae? I don’t know about you but it just doesn’t add to his coolness. One of the main reasons why DMC became popular was because of that and they’re messing with it. Well, it’s a minor thing anyway so I don’t think it’ll have that big an impact to the show. But still…
Also noticed that they showed a girl in the ED who looks closely similar to Trish. I’m definitely looking forward to that. So like I said, I’ll give this one a few more episodes to pick itself up before I decide whether to continue or not.

The girl is loli factor and “lovely item” for Dante. ^^;; I don’t think she’ll have a particularly great role in the story aside from being cute.
I found the coolness of Dante quite ridiculous, but as I understand this is part of the game… well, I still can’t take it seriously. But I heard wonders about fights in DMC and the anime so far proved to be a disappointment in that field. I expected more exciting fights, better coreography and… well, in the theater they even missed the opportunity to have blood splatter on that screen! That should’ve been a must!
Dante’s liking of strawberry sundae comes from the DMC novels. And yes, the “giel that looks like Trish” is Trish herself.
Remember DMC was done to sponsor the (now delayed) DMC 4 game, so it’s unlikely it’ll follow any of the game storylines (though there are some references to the game, like the DMC2 coin toss).
Yeah the strawberry sundae was a major let down and almost made me stop watching the rest of the ep (I’m not going to say it destroyed my view of the character Dante but it did put a few cracks in it).
Luckily Trish will make an appareance in the anime and so does Lady from DMC 3 which I’m very happy about because she kicked ass! Especially with that rocket launcher she carried around in the game! You can verify all this on the official character page of the anime.

Unfortunately Patty (who I found really annoying throughout the first ep) is on that page as well which means we’re going to see more of her in the future. >_<
I’m sorry if my english isn’t what it should be but I’m not a native english speaker.
This is a great anime. I like its game version.

@kuromitsu: I’d agree with you that the fights are not on par with the ones in the game. Let’s hope we get to see huge boss fights or something similar later on. Add to that, some of the cool gun-wielding, sword-slashing moves Dante is capable of. ^^
@ximpa: Thanks for the info. Didn’t know they got that from the novel. Still don’t like the strawberry sundae thing though.
@brainie: Definitely a bummer. If they wanted to add in some loli factor it would have been nice if they added more moe qualities to the character, ne?
do none of you relise what the people did in the 1st episode? when dante was fighting he didnt want the girl to see the violence hence when he puleed down her cap over her eyes, when the train light went off he then decided to take that creepy guy down (obviously he dosnt have speed so fast he could hide the body) and when he was fighting in the theatre he shot down the extra screen infront of her so she wouldnt see any blood or impact being made, and to let the guy run for his life when he was next to the girl all this is completley relevent to the fact of “how cool is dante” fact
can you blog about this

I dunno what ya complainin bout, whole thing was great. I was doubtful of Patty at first but I can live with it. Dante is a perfect blend of manga, game and novel version. Though the sundae thing could be seen as bad it just adds to his character, I think in the novel his reason behind it was that the other mercenaries get stupidly drunk and it costs them missions, where as the sugar from the ice cream helps boost his energy or something, but still, I don’t see it as a character flaw, DMC wouldn’t be much fun if Dante took himself too seriously….Cant wait to see Lady and Trish in action though!
Very interesting Game!
