Claymore – 17 “The Witch’s Maw Pt. 3″

Synopsis: Clare finds Jeane but it looks as if it’s too late.

Clare finds Jeane still bound but instead of a warrior, Clare finds a butterfly-like Awakened Being. Clare thinks she is too late. The Awakened Being speaks to her and asks Clare to finish her while she still has the consciousness of a human being. That way she can die as human. Clare is amazed that although Jeane’s body has awakened, her mind still hasn’t. Jeane pleads Clare as she can’t suppress the process any longer. However, instead of striking Jeane with her sword, Clare embraces Jeane and rallies her to come back. Jeane says she can’t but Clare continues to encourage her, saying that the chance of returning isn’t zero. A strong power starts to envelope Jeane.

Jeane, then, finds herself back to normal. Clare clothes her and tells that she’s half-awakened, which means that she gets to remain human for a while. Jeane says that she felt something pulling her. Clare tells her that she tried what Galatea did to her and that she was amazed it went smoothly. Clare then asks for Jeane’s help. Jeane introduces herself to Clare and tells her she’s glad to help.

Meanwhile, Galatea is badly injured from fighting Dauf. Riful comments that Galatea did rather well and nearly went all out in releasing her powers. She comments further that Galatea’s release and control of Yoma powers was very impressive. She then tells her that she will have her awaken. Riful instructs Dauf about it. Galatea tells Riful and Dauf that they are to slow.

All of a sudden, Jeane and Clare spring forth from the ground. Clare asks Galatea if she is alright. Galatea tells her she can’t say she is fine but she will do what she can. Riful is amazed that Jeane turned back.

Jeane tells Galatea and Clare that if they want to escape, she can hold the enemy back. Since she owes her life to them, they can use her life as they wish. Galatea comments that the adversary isn’t someone one can defeat by one’s self no matter how hard one tries. She tells her that she and Clare will stop Dauf’s movements while Jeane concentrate on striking his throat. It is the perfect job for her as Jeane has the fastest and most powerful strike attack of all the warriors. Clare then tells Jeane to use her life for herself. Galatea and Care fights Dauf. Riful observes that if two are fighting Dauf at the same time, Dauf loses his concentration and Galatea can use her skill.

Meanwhile Jeane is twisting her arm. Twenty-one is the highest number of rotations she can achieve. Galatea and Clare impales Dauf’s palms to the ground but Dauf uses every once of his strength, freeing himself and smashing Galatea against Clare.

Jeane launches. Her attack works like a drill. Dauf tries to block it with his hand but it Jeane bores through it. She, however, loses momentum and falls to the ground. Riful declares that the fight is over. She says it was so intense, she enjoyed it well. She then says that comrades are very important and that she would love it if Clare and the rest could share their friendship to her.

Dauf whimpers in pain. Riful tells him to shut up since she is trying to appreciate the sentimental moment but Dauf complains about his hands. Riful tells him that for all his massive strength, it takes a very long time for him to recover and regenerate.

Clare stands up again. Riful tells her that she did not want to kill them. She just wants to inflict pain so that they will awaken. Clare asks Jeane if she is alive. Jeane replies and Clare asks her to do her move again. Jeane explains that it’s not something she can use many times but she will try. Riful commands Dauf to fight them again but not kill them.

Clare tells Jeane that she will create a path for her while Jeane concentrates to strike his sword into Dauf’s throat. Clare then attacks Dauf. Riful notices that though Clare has a borrowed arm, she is doing rather well but it is an overuse of Yoma power. It’s like her completely awakened arm is controlling her actions. Overall, there are too many uneccessary moves.

Clare asks Jeane if she is ready. Dauf however manages to strike her. He shoots his rods again but Clare comes out to deflect it. Jeane launches off. Clare launches off too. She concentrates and read the enemy’s yoki so she can strike the exact locations. Clare performs her flash sword without hitting Clare, much to the disbelief of Riful. Jeane’s sword strikes through Dauf’s chest. She then attempts to cut off his head but long tendrils stopped her. It was Riful. She tells them that she can’t let them kill Dauf since he is her man. Clare strikes. He sword hits Riful’s head.

Riful shows her awakened form. She picks up Dauf and as promised, if Clare can hit her, she will tell her the name of the guy in the North. She tells them that he is Easley the Silver King. She then tells Clare and the others that if they wish to defeat him, they must join her.

Galatea then speaks to Clare. She tells her that her mission is to take Clare back to the organization and that it would be better if there will be no resistance. Clare responds that as of the moment, she has no intention of returning as she has something to do. Galatea asks her if she wishes to return to the organization as a corpse. Jeane, however, raises her sword and Galatea is puzzled. Jeane tells Galatea that she owes her life to Clare. Galatea tells her that it would mean defying the organization. Jeane replies that she already lost her life once. She does not want to go against her morals to prolong her life. Galatea smiles then leaves saying that low-ranked warriors like Jeane and Clare have no chance against Dwellers of the Deep. She says further that she has no intention of searching for their bodies among those destroyed by the Dwellers of the Deep. She also tells them that she doesn’t know whether she will be friend or foe the next time they meet but she encourages them to live on till then.

Meanwhile. in some icy land, a group of Claymores are struggling against Awakened Beings.

Anyway, this was a great arc. I was especially thrilled to see Galatea and Riful. It was great to see Galatea fight. I was somehow disappointed that though Clare and Jeane continued to fight Dauf, Galatea didn’t. Then again, she held off Dauf by herself while Clare rescued Jeane. That was a quite a feat in itself. Even Riful was impressed.

I think Riful is a fun character. I like her childish, playful, seemingly-innocent character. Too bad I won’t see more of her in the anime.

Also, I was kinda wishing Jeane didn’t revert to normal. She does look cool as an Awakened Being. I wonder how the other Claymores like Clare, Galatea, or even Teresa would look if they awaken.
