Seirei no Moribito - 16 “In All Earnestness”

Synopsis: Shuga reveals the truth he discovered regarding Chagum and the Official Founding History. The search for the Prince resumes.

Shuga travels to the valley where Chagum supposedly died in order to check for Chagum’s remains, if, indeed, he died. The place is usually veiled in poisonous mist but it was cleared by the previous day’s downpour. However, the mist might return soon so Shuga must hurry.

Sagum’s death has been confirmed and the palace is in mourning. The Emperor, however, thinks that it is not wise to let the public know the truth at that time.

Back to Shuga, he tries to go down the valley but the Emperor’s warriors arrive. Jin, the one who overheard Shuga as he borrowed a horse, tells him that the Holy Sage has long been aware that Shuga tamed the Invisibles (the keepers of the tome) and was visiting the chamber often. The leader of the warriors explain that they have been sent by the Holy Sage. They presume that Shuga came to that place because he believed that Chagum is alive. He asks Shuga how much faith does he place in his belief. Jin then tells Shuga that if his conviction is wrong, he will be thrown into the valley together with the keeper who assisted him.

The leader of the warriors descend the valley to search for Chagum’s body. He sees the corpse of the horse Chagum and Balsa rode on. He also finds Chagum and Balsa’s clothes but it appears that they have been duped. He regrets not going down the valley then but since it was filled with poisonous mist that time, if he descended, he would have been dead.

The leader then says that the chances that Chagum is still alive has increased but the question is where to find him. Jin asks Shuga if he has thought about that matter. Shuga replies that he has. The warriors’ leader then tells his men and Shuga that they will return to the court to report their findings to the Emperor and the Holy Sage. Shuga says that Sagum will be overjoyed but the warriors’ leader informs him that Sagum has already passed away.

When Shuga returned to the palace, he goes to Sagum’s wake. He regrets not telling him that Chagum might be alive. The Holy Sage comes and Shuga explains that as he was deciphering the tomes on his own, he discovered an important truth: the Official Founding History is a lie. It is only a tale created for the sole purpose of ruling the people of the land. He explains further that the water fiend was actually a benevolent spirit who bestows the blessing of water upon the land.

The Holy Sage tells Shuga that it is difficult to accept what he said. Shuga tells him that before the Holy Founding Father set foot on the land, the native Yakue already knew of the existence of another world, Nayug. They understood that the spirit grants its blessings to both worlds. Kainan Nanai feared that knowledge and so he fabricated a different tale so that the Yakue legend would be forgotten, thus creating the New Yogo Empire. However, they did not want the same event to come with no way to recall the original legend do he built the chamber of tomes and entrusted the truth to the star diviners. Shuga tells the Holy Sage that the emergency they have currently is caused by their negligence and their obsession with politics.

The Holy Sage questions Shuga that if the spirit that possessed the Prince is one who bestows water upon the land, why hasn’t the Drought Sign disappeared. Shuga replies that the Drought Sign is destined to occur whenever the water spirit is about to be born. If the Prince was truly killed, Shuga explains that the previous day’s downpour would not have occurred and the land would no longer be blessed with water.

Shuga then asks the Emperor, who has been listening the whole time, that he be granted full authority to search for the Prince. He promises that he will find him in a matter of days. The Holy Sage tells the Emperor that he realizes he has been obsessed with politics. To correct it, he asks the Emperor to grant Shuga authority. The Emperor tells Shuga to do as he will. Shuga then asks if he can “borrow” the Emperor’s warriors.

Meanwhile, in the city, Tanda visits Touya and Saya. Touya has been operating an errand business and so far it is successful. Tanda asks Touya to deliver some goods to a certain address either that day or the following day. Touya asks if Balsa is trying to cross a mountain range. Tanda replies that he doesn’t know. Touya tells him that he’ll have the goods delivered without anyone noticing.

Unknown to Tanda, Shuga and the warriors have been observing Touya. One of them pretends to be a customer of Touya. He tells Touya that he wants some lumber to be delivered.

Shuga, who is watching, tells the warriors’ leader that he is impressed how they found the errand-runner mentioned in the reports in just five days and how in three days they got him to lower is guard. Jin explains to him that being a skilled warrior is not enough and that gathering intelligence is their strength. Shuga asks what is their next step. Jin tells him to just watch.

Touya is talking with the warrior-disguised-as-a-customer. Touya then leaves him for a while to make a receipt. While Touya is gone, the customer takes Touya’s logbook. He hands it to another warrior waiting outside. The other warrior skims through the logbook. He hands it back to the warrior in disguise who returns just in time as Saya served some tea.

The warrior who skimmed through the logbook writes down what he has read. It appears that he has a photographic memory. Shuga is amazed.

Balsa and Chagum, meanwhile, are preparing for the journey. Chagum says he is nervous. Balsa tells him that they will be going to Lower Ougi to buy some stuff.

Back to the warriors, they are now done analyzing the logbook’s contents. He instructs four of the warriors to pair up and go to the places mentioned in the logbook. He instructs them that once they find the spear-wielder’s hideout, he and the others must be notified and they will then launch a surprise attack. The leader forbids attacking alone.

Shuga then tells the leader that once the Prince is seized, he will escort him personally. Since the Prince has seen the warriors’ faces when they tried to assassinate him, the Prince might become afraid if Shuga is not with them.

The leader explains that they might find the spear-wielders hideout that day but they will not make a move until three days later. Shuga says that for the meantime, he will return to the court and continue to decipher the tomes. The warriors then disperse.

Jin notices that Touya is leaving the shop. The leader comments that it is the first time the boy left the shop carrying the goods himself. He calls Yun, the warrior with a photographic memory, and Zen, the one who pretended to be a customer, and instructs them to follow Touya at a distance.

Balsa and Chagum go to a graveyard, Chagum removes a brick from the wall. She has hidden some money inside. She explains that it is dangerous to keep the money at home so she hid it in several places. They then head to Lower Ougi. There, Balsa tells Chagum that it will be a long walk to Toumi village. Balsa then tells Chagum that she won’t carry him anymore. Chagum says that he’ll be alright.

Balsa gives Chagum some money and tells him to treat himself to some hekimoom. She tells him to haggle and buy alot. Chagum is happy and he goes off. Shuga, meanwhile, is in Lower Ougi.
