Anime News

S.A.^2 (Special A, Soon to be an Anime)

My bunny ears just caught a sizzling news… that is, Special A is going to be anime-ted!! It’s been announced in the latest issue of Hana to Yume, where it’s serialized. I am especially delighted by this news, being a fan of the manga myself. Although I somewhat stopped following it months ago. Now that it’ll be given life as an anime, I guess it only means one thing… I have to catch up on reading it again! o__o

The air date of the anime is yet to be announced, but still… this is certainly something to look forward to! ^-^

For the benefit of those who are not familiar with the series, here goes a little synopsis:

The manga stars Hikari Hanazono and her fated rival Kei Takishima, who gave her the first taste of bitter defeat in pro-wrestling way back when they were six years old. She becomes one of the top two students in the prestigious high school where Kei studies, but nevertheless remains second best to him. Hikari remains headstrong as ever, determined to beat Kei no matter what.

If that caught your interest and want to know more about the series? You can just go here (beware of spoilers though) :p

At first glance, it might seem like a KareKano ripoff, but I beg to disagree. The rivalry between the two leads of the series might be reminiscent of this, but the similarity ends there. Special A has its own unique blend of characters with their very own personalities, which in my opinion, makes the series shine. It doesn’t have the depth and angst of KareKano, just more wacky and waffy moments, which easily makes it such an enjoyable series. The antics in the show, especially Hikari x Kei’s, is something I look forward to each time I read, looking forward to how this rivalry will turn into a blossoming love.

Oh, and the manga is already licensed by VIZ by the way, so please don’t ask where to get scans or scanlations of the manga

Probable Cast and Staff

The seiyuu cast is still not decided at this point, but if they’re going to have the same cast as the ones in the Drama CD, it’ll be a blast! The male seiyuus especially… are <33

The seiyuus for the Drama CD are as follows:

Hikari Hanazono: Masumi Asano (Saga in Little Snow Fairy Sugar, Najimi in Dōjin Work)
Kei Takishima: Kenichi Suzumura (Kyouichi in Boys Be, Kamui in X, Shinn in Gundam Seed Destiny)
Tadashi Karino: Masakazu Morita (Ichigo in Bleach, Hihara in Kin-iro no Corda, Tidus in FFX)
Akira Toudo: Yuu Asakawa (Rider in Fate/Stay Night, Sakaki in Azumanga Daioh)
Jun Yamamoto: Souichiro Hoshi (Kira in Gundam Seed, Kazuki in GetBackers, Kei in Onegai Teacher)
Ryuu Tsuji: Hirofumi Nojima (Izumo in Aria, Gainer in Overman King Gainer, Morie in PGE)
Yahiro Saiga: Daisuke Namikawa (Maiku in Onegai Twins, Fay in Tsubasa Chronicle, Eigetsu in Saiunkoku)
Sakura Ushikubo: Yumi Kakazu (Aya in Ayashi no Ceres, Mikaze in Stratos 4, Akari in Hikaru no Go)

Rumors are also floating around 2ch with regards to the staff that’s going to work on the anime:

Director: Yoshikazu Miyao
Series Composition: Jukki Hanada
Character Design: Kiyotaka Nakahara
Animation Production: GONZO X AIC

I don’t know if I should be happy at seeing powerhouse studios GONZO and AIC’s team up as the possible producer of this project… I mean, GONZO always makes me have mixed feelings, seeing the animes they’ve worked on. Honestly, I’ll be more delighted if BONES will undertake this project.

  2. @Tomochii-Chan: hehe… yup, no kidding :) I stopped reading the manga a few months ago as well, in favor of other series. But now I have the urge to read it again because of this announcement XD

  3. I followed the smell of probable bishies here…

At first glance, it does remind me so much of KareKano, which had a lot of promise on being a wonderful anime series. The potential was never realized due to some creative differences in direction.

I was really impressed with BONES’ work on Ouran, so I do hope that they take on another shoujo series.

  4. I was pretty excited to hear this news too, since I read a few chapters of the manga way back before it was licensed and found it to be cute n’ fluffy shoujo fun. (Not to mention there’s been a lack of good shoujo anime lately, Lovely Complex notwithstanding.) I’m definitely looking forward to the anime ^_^

  5. Wait, what? seriously? Wow. It’s been a while since any shoujo manga been adapted into an anime now a days. It’s a good news. Just that i hope they won’t screw the ending and make an original ending, though we don’t know as of now, because the manga is still on long run…

  7. @Seleria: well, SA have far less depth than KareKano, but definitely makes it up with more waff and wackiness XD

@Senna: noticed the lack of shoujo animes as well… so I’m definitely keeping an eye on this one! :3

@whitelite: I think the manga can actually go on and on, since there’s not much of a plot after all. Given that, it’ll be good if they wrap the series up with a decent closure :)

  8. i’ve been closely following this manga, well the scanslated chapters that is. i think this would make an interesting anime. i only hope that it won’t end up like perfect girl evolution when it was adapted into anime. the manga was way better. i like kenichi suzumura, he’s one of my fave seiyuus so i think he would suit kei. i wonder how many volumes of the manga they’re planning to adapt in the storyline… but really i just hope it ends well.

  10. @usagijen: yeah i hope so too^_^ then again, maybe we shouldn’t set our standards too high or we might end up disappointed:p Romeo and Juliet started out okay then somewhere along the way it went kaputT_T i hope S.A. won’t be like that…

  17. @Melissa & Jennifer: Sometimes we just have to let go of our ‘manga art’ purist selves, to fully enjoy the anime. I’m reserving my judgments till the show finally airs, but I like what I’m seeing in the screenshots so far :3

@Shao: Kei x Hikari FTW xD I think they’re pretty much the manga’s OTP
