Suteki Tantei Labyrinth Episode 2 – 繭樹の決意 (Mayuki’s Determination)

Opening Song

Looks like the ending song we had last episode is actually the real opening song for this one. It’s “Monochrome” by kannivalism. A soft-rock and upbeat song, which I found fit for portraying the dramatic, mystery elements of the show. Quite an enjoyable song which grows on you the more you listen to it And as usual, the opening sequence is stunning~ though I can’t help but think if we’re really gonna see those scenes in the actual episodes ^^;;

Summary

This week we get more insights into the life of Mayuki Hyouga, the young boy detective who didn’t have much of the chance to interact with the outside world because of his blinding radiance. Now he finally had the chance to go to school, where we learn about Sanae, Minori’s sister who is actually Mayuki’s acquaintance (I made a booboo in my first episode summary, I sort of ‘switched’ them and named ‘Minori’ as ‘Sanae’ >.>). She lied to her sister about the Hyouga mansion being a haunted house for her not to gain any more rivals for the shota’s love lol. We still don’t know how she met Mayuki, which I believe will be delved in later on as the series progresses.

Sanae reminds me of Elle from Shadow Skill by the way, with the similarity in their hair color and brawler tendencies. And I just realized, that both Suteki Tantei Labyrinth and Shadow Skill TV series are from Studio Deen :p

Mayuki enters the same class as Minori, gaining girl friends because of his shota-ness and guy rivals in the person of the twins Kouta and Rakuta, since he stole the limelight of bishieness that’s supposedly on them.

Several bomb incidents happen in Old Tokyo, and it seems that Byakko is involved in this, as we see her lurking in the shadows, brainwashing some guy into hating wealthy people. She also mentions about how the organization she’s in won’t fail his plans or something, which is yet another mystery to be revealed later on.

Mayuki, UNshined

With the final BOMB set to explode in minutes, the police frantically searches some factory, the supposedly place of explosion mentioned in the bomb threat. Shota detective Mayuki to the rescue! He makes use of his ESP and tracks down the bomb source in no time.

Who would’ve thought that the perpetrator will make use of dust bomb disguised as flour. Ingenious as it might seem however, this kind of “bomb” would have to be lit first, so the criminal was caught before he gets to do so. I thought it was quite silly and anticlimactic, that the criminal will be caught this easy. There must be some ways to light up the place without direct contact, but then they weren’t clever enough to devise such a scheme.

Byakko who seems to have expected Mayuki’s arrival, then goes someplace safe from the explosion that’s gonna happen. This doesn’t seem quite logical to me, because she should certainly know that Mayuki will be capable of preventing the explosion from happening, unless she looked down on his abilities.

Since Byakko still stayed near the vicinity, Seiran’s “dolls” Yuuhi and Souka catches up to her, leading to yet another catfight (with claws). Seiran summons Yuuhi and Souka by the way, who’s the alter ego of Hatsumi and Sanae respectively. It seems unbelievable how he was able to summon Yuuhi when she was supposedly at school o__O They should make us see the entire summoning sequence next time.

With just one bout of fight, Byakko’s face gets wounded and she runs off from the battle. How exciting of a battle this was >.> In any case, I guess we can let this pass since it’s not really the main highlight of the episode. The highlight of the show, for me at least, is Mayuki’s birthday.

Our little detective turns 12! And, most of the main characters we’ve seen so far join him in his celebration. All his shotacon victims the girls give him presents, which coincidentally completes a tea set of some sort. Among the presents he received, what touched him most is the one from Seiran his mom, who’s said to be recuperating in Swiss. Mayuki was moved to tears as he remembers his mother, since he has been living all these years away from her. But according to Sanae, not even once has she heard him say that he’s lonely. He has Seiran by his side after all :p Most of them were touched by this, especially Miyako, whose voice seemed to have switched with Sanae when she told him “Erai zo, Mayuki-kun! (How admirable of you, Mayuki!)”

The Killer Smile

Mayuki then gives another cheesy speech about how he’s not at all lonely because there are these people by his side, who even gathered to celebrate his birthday with him. He’s especially thankful to Minori, Rakuta and Kouta who gave him the courage to step outside the confinement of his house and witness the outside world.

It’s finally bedtime as Seiran tucks Mayuki to sleep (don’t think dirty thoughts now, save that for later). Mayuki exclaims how he’s going to be much much stronger from now on, for the sake of other people as well.

And the episode concludes, leaving us with still many questions regarding Mayuki’s personal background. It was said that he was raised by his mom alone, so he also doesn’t know who his father is. Aside from that, much of his information is like top secret, that even the chief of the police warns Miyaki and Ryuusuke not to get themselves involved with him. That makes Mayuki an even more mysterious character, since we’re being given hints that there’s something more behind this shota detective who’s pretty much like a superhuman saint at this point. Seiran remains mysterious as well, and I’ll be looking forward to how much of his character will be developed or revealed later on. I’ve already seen some glimpse of his ‘darkness’ in the manga, so I think we’ll see more of that, after the lighter episodes we’ll be seeing in the next couple of weeks.

Ending Song

“Dakishimete” by Shiita Ө. In contrast to the soft-rock opening song, the ending took the turn of a dramatic ballad. It’s the kind of song that pierces through your heart, as you can emphatize with the loneliness Mayuki feels by being away from his mom. I found it really touching, though whose melody isn’t the type that’s easy to remember, because of the diva-ish quality of the song.

I think it won’t be long before the tsundere twins become shota-converts as well. We’ll see :p

Sneak Preview

The sneak preview features some rather comical dialogue from the characters, so I guess it won’t hurt to share it here The one from the last episode featured Kouta and Rakuta mentioning about the history of their names hehe.

Minori: By the way neechan, there’s something I want to know…
Sanae: What’s it about?
Minori: You’re not seriously going after Mayuki-kun at your age, are you?
Sanae: I’m sorry Minori, but I’m serious about it. *with a dramatic seductive voice*
Minori: Wahhh! Then that means you’re a sh-sh-shota— *stutters*
Sanae: Shota?
Minori: …I can’t say it!
Sanae: Haha! Well sorry, but I’m afraid I AM A SHOTACONNN
Minori: Wah! You said that S-word!! Motherrr!

LOL XDDD

I was somewhat inspired by this episode to do some mini parody, so.. watch out for that tomorrow X3 *heads to sleep*
