Deep Frying Shion no OMGZz 01

After watching Shion no Oh and having realized my cluelessness about Shougi, I sought the manga for help on what the heck just happened in that Shougi fight in the episode. What I discovered however was far more than a little enlightenment on Shougi, but the striking fact that the manga should’ve been a prerequisite for preparing people for the “TRAP CRAP”, to prevent any more of what shall hereby be known as the “Shion no OMGZZ” reaction (coined by one of the hapless hamster victims LOL :p).
I think the main difference I saw with the manga and the anime (based on watching episode 1, and the chapter it covered in the manga) is the presence of manboobs the subtlety in revealing the “surprise” in the show. Although that certainly spiced things up and created quite a stir among fans, it undeniably made the “TRAP CRAP” scar more serious and damaging as well. The anime sort of, smacked the TRAP revelation right on the audience’s face, in what seemed to be a rape scene even O__O

The Manga’s Trap Unveilment
So how did the manga reveal the trap, you ask? Well, they did it in a simple, subtle, and not so shock-inducing manner…
After the game with Shion, Ayumi meets up with his friend Eri and goes to change his clothes. If you pay enough attention, you’ll quickly notice that he entered the Male Restroom (see the pic above). That’s already much of a hint as to his sexuality. What comes next, is inside-the-restroom scene…
Ayumi… is hawt.
Voila! Ayumi bears it all…! Well, he leaves his brief there because it’s actually sexier than nude. So there ladies and gentlemen, the trap is revealed! There is no rape-like-trap-unveilment in the manga (pics of these in the latter section). Let’s just say that Osamu-sensei was rather, gentle in the manga, as he didn’t resort to violently undressing Ayumi. He simply said what he said in the anime… without any other actions. Quite anti-climactic and less exciting, but less scar-inducing, IMO.

The Trap Crap. The manboobs make it worse.
If you simply watched Shion no Ou raw and didn’t quite understand what they said during ‘that’ scene, this picture will certainly have you fooled. I mean, just look at those manboobs! And the… not so manly position of Ayumi here, like some rape victim o__O
Now that I think about it, I guess we should be a bit thankful that the anime chose this kind of ’scheme’ for revealing the trap. It could’ve gotten much worse actually, and far more damaging, if the freaky Osamu grabbed Ayumi’s balls and told him… “I know what u got there, boy” *shudder*
Ok, you can forget I said that and focus on the manga… Ayumi didn’t have those manboobs originally (as you’ve seen in the restroom scene), but… I can’t help but think what that manga restroom scene would’ve looked like if they were present :p *spanks herself for being naughty*
Another contrast between the manga Ayumi and the anime Ayumi is that he has softer expressions in the manga, as can be seen in this pic.
A Less Fuglier Osamu-sensei
Aside from the subtlety the manga provides, it also presents Osamu as a… less fugly character (looks wise).
Osamu, manga version. Less colors = less downright creepy Osamu.
Fuggleeehhh Osamuuuu.
Those pics from the manga is also the anticlimactic Osamu-trap-discovery sequence (from left to right). As you can see, Osamu never laid a hand on Ayumi. Though, I think the violence he showed in the anime, together with his fugly and creepy “image” is but right for his reputation as the 「鬼人」 (devilman).
P.S. About me referring to the manboobs as the main difference in the episode. I lied. That’s actually in terms of the shallow aspect of the show, since they changed something plot critical stuff regarding Stalker-san. I think I’ll delve on that on my later deep frying. Perhaps the second episode will allow us to see the plans they have in mind for this change.

LOL. I actually read the manga before watching the anime so I knew Ayumi was a TRAP but I can’t tell you how shocked I was when Osamu-sensei….did that…And yeah, the manb00bs were just as WTF to me as they were to you.
The manga is more subtle than the anime in many ways. But probably what I think is the most important difference is the way they play the stalker aspect. I mean, in the manga it was so subtle that it wasn’t creepy at all and seemed rather harmless. In the anime, the stalker was already gagging Shion o.O.
And eh…You’re a Shion x Ayumi shipper? Wow. I’ve never even considered them as a pairing.
I wonder if I’ll get sources for these too. Being harassed by Seleria until she is satisfied (a max of three (3) gropes), I know I’ll understand this anime. :p
@kiseki gurl: yeah, I think that’s the most important difference as well, affecting the series majorly plot-wise. they’ve already shown the face of the guy and his obsession over Shion o__O
But then the entire point of this deep frying was the ‘main’ shallow parts of the episode, so I didn’t touch that aspect yet.
I think I’ll delve in that in episode 2.
and yes, I’ve become a Shion x Ayumi shipper after seeing them spend much time together in volume 3 X3 hehe :3

But still… I quite like the anime. It might be the only one I’m actually looking forward to every week this season (which I’m afraid doesn’t have much that caught my eyes). Maybe if Ayumi looks more like the manga version rather than the anime version…..

as for the furiganas in the manga, there are furiganas for some of the kanjis, so it assumes that you’re familiar with many of it o__o

well, perhaps “man boobs” is pretty subjective… I think what made us jump into that “conclusion” is not only the chest per se, but also the position Ayumi was in xDDD

I do agree with Yuu-chan that the anime way was surprising but more dramatic, although it made me rewind a couple of times to understand that it wasn’t attempted rape.
Shion no Ou is one of the Fall series that I’ve been eagerly following (despite my utter lack of shougi knowlege as well). It gets better and better every episode. I encourage you to catch up and marathon it later when you have some time to spare. =)
