Sacrifices to be made

Kana: Our school is not good enough for you, huh?!
There was a brief conversation between Chiaki and Kana about Haruka’s choice of middle school and high school. Apparently, Chiaki does not think too highly of that school and wishes to get into a better one. Chiaki believes that Haruka was forced to enroll into local schools so she could take care of her younger siblings.
How quaint, I thought. Haruka really represents most firstborns, who have responsibilities thrust upon them and whose choices is limited because of her obligations. She has sacrificed better education, putting her family first before herself and her betterment. We have not seen a trace of regret nor resentment from Haruka about her circumstances as well. Really admirable.
We can find similar situations in real life, like how older siblings do not get the chance to study because their parents cannot afford it. Thus, the older siblings work so the younger ones can enter school. There are many freedoms and privileges firstborns cannot enjoy.

Haruka might not be as popular as Chiaki nor Kana among fanbois, but among the siblings, I really like how the author fabricated her personality the best. Thus far, she is truly worthy of being admired and respected by her siblings, seeing the great lengths of her sacrifice and devotion to them. A truly wonderful example of an eldest sibling
Birth order theory and school
Firstborns will usually be in the honor roll or excelling in other aspects of school. They usually hold high positions in the school body, club committees, or other school factions. School is just another place for them to overachieve. They continue to put themselves on display, since other people may gauge the family on how he/she is. Friends may often come to them for advice or for tutoring. Teacher’s pet? I think so, as they will tend to continue to seek approval from authority figures, like how they do at home.
Can’t say much about Haruka at this point. Although, she is a skilled volleyball player, she refuses to join the volleyball team because she puts her siblings first, and goes home early.
Middle children will be very at home at school because all of them are in the same boat as classmates and will most likely adjust to school life the fastest. With the lack of direct competition from the older siblings, school might be a place where middle children will seek to shine in areas not previously or currently being excelled by firstborns. Although, middle children have a tendency to become competitive, thus may seek to achieve higher positions held by older siblings to outdo them. It is also possible that middle children will detest further authority figures and will become troublemakers at school.

Love hurts
Kana is not academically motivated. She does not exhibit any interest in athletics either, well, at least not yet. However, she has the class hottie crushing on her
Youngest children may have the hardest time at school if they are used to being pampered and taken cared of. There is also a chance they may exhibit domineering qualities to balance off their home life, where they hold the least power.
Chiaki has the most going for her at school, known as the class genius. Her opinion is highly regarded as shown with the little nicknaming shenanigan. Nobody even questioned her when she ordered Makoto to hold two buckets of water till nighttime. Imagine how much power she possesses at school o.O Bully seems to be an understatement.

The birth order theory on only children
On my previous deep frying, Feinlore asked about only children, so here is the lowdown:
Only children may most likely turn out the same way as firstborns are, since for at least nine months, firstborns are the only children. Similarly, parents tend to give high expectations on them and may be pressured to take over the family business as the only heir.
The special thing about only children is that they learn very early on to be contended with themselves, that is if the parents don’t spoil the child silly. The only child plays alone. With the absence of siblings, they may become more mature faster since they interact with adults most of the time. With the lack of sibling rivalry and comparison, they will most likely become confident and think highly of themselves which often leads to being ambitious and become perfectionists.
Pairings

Puppy love * woof * X3
Yes, I see this show is opening some windows for love. We’ve already seen signs of romance between Kana and Fujioka and some combustible sparks between Chiaki and Makoto. I wonder who will grab the heart of our lovely Haruka-neechama.

I am a middle child. Lol, but I’m no Kana! More like Malcolm in the Middle.
Chiaki certainly is not your typical iMOEto… the youngest ones are bullied most of the time, especially if there are bully brothers… *grumble* T__T
usagijen: speaking from experience?
regarding birth-order:
the theory itself is only hypothetical, but it subjects to many factors and the said qualities can be further categorized based on culture and values and genetics and parents, and so on.
Here Haruka, realizing absence of parents, becomes subject to obsessive-compulsive behaviour due to the necessity of taking the role of carer and pseudo-mother for both of her siblings. At least, maybe that’s what the mangaka perceive on being the eldest and no presence of parents
Maybe another crucial factor is a flawed parenting, popularly depicted in many novels (what comes to my mind is Jodi Picoult). Maybe deviations from the known birth-order pattern in characters of people are what people can relate from media to their personal life right now, due to, well, parents and many other circumstances…. but this is another thing.
@tj han I liked that show
@usagijen Awww poor bebe :p Bullying is a sign of affection or so says the bullies.
@vre Yes, the birth order theory is still a heavily-debated theory till now. Studies regarding the proving and disproving continue with no conclusive answers still. Though, that has not hampered my fascination for it. I am just merely using it as a means to possibly explain the behavior of the sisters and how it might also explain ours.
As you mentioned, there are too many factors that come to play with regards to a person’s personality.
Thus, my use of the birth order theory here is just to state the prevailing patterns and compare it against the Minami sisters’ personalities.
All for the sake of discussion and for fun
