This is Madness! This is Honey and Clover! LIVE!

I was actually surprised that Umino Chika’s popular manga Honey and Clover, will have yet another adaptation, after the anime and the live-action movie. This time, it will be a live-action series on Fuji TV starting January 8, next year.

It will star Narumi Riko as Hanamoto Hagumi and Ikuta Toma as Takemoto Yuuta. I wonder if Narumi will be as good (or better) than Yuu Aoi, who portrayed Hagu excellently in the movie. I also wonder if Toma, who starred as Nakatsu in Hanazakari no Kimi-tachi e and Junpei in Hana Yori Dango (both series were adaptations of manga), will give Takemoto’s character justice. I think Sho Sakurai from the movie didn’t quite fit. Anyway, I hope those who will portray Morita, Yamada, Mayama, and even the secondary characters, Hanamoto-sensei and Harada, will be good.

Ikuta Toma as Takemoto Narumi Riko as Hagu

Honey and Clover tells of the everyday lives of five art-college students. We see them deal with family issues. We see them submit their graduate thesis (or fail to do so). We see them hunt for jobs. And we see them fall in love. The two-season anime was aired in Fuji TV’s noitamina block in 2005. The following year, a live-action movie was released.

Next year’s TV drama would be another opportunity to take a ride in the emotional ferris wheel that is Honey and Clover.

  2. Also, about your concern of whether Riko would perform better than Aoi – I think she has talent – A LOT of talent – its her appearance that’s shaky. Aoi IS THE Hagu – she looks, dresses, and talks like her. Riko is very young (15?), but she looks very mature. Hagu should be the exact opposite.

As for Toma, he’ll do just fine.

  3. Honey and Clover is one of the manga series that can work greatly as drama. I am looking forward to this one, unlike Negima.

  4. “dorama cant be as good as the anime (or manga)”… is what people usually say… but i think the story itself will be bland with the real-life setting (proven by the movie)

what really makes honey clover clicks is what have been presented in the anime… all the meshing of great songs of Spitz and Suga Shikao, the comedy, and the crazy character dynamics only possible in anime or manga

well, the movie was short compared to the two seasons of the anime. a lot of changes had to be done. though i also think the movie wasn’t as brilliant as the anime.

as for the TV drama, it will have more time to expound on the plot but whether it will be good, depends on the direction and the actors among other things. we’ll see…

  6. I also think that the movie was not as effective as the anime because of the length. We didn’t get enough time to invest and grow with the characters. Hopefully, this lack of development between audience and the show will be remedied with the JDrama platform.

Aoi truly embodied Hagu, her quirks, looks, everything.

I am really looking forward to this, as well as the two-episode special of Nodame Cantabile, both produced by Fuji TV. Gotta love that TV station XD
