Months of waiting after the news of an OVA, the first installment of the Kyou Kara Maou! OVA series is finally here! The pretty boys are back with a couple of new additions to stir things up! Step right in for some steamy bishie goodness

Summary

Yuuri, Conrad, Wolfram, and Gunther stopover Caloria before going to a nearby onsen (hot spring). On the way, a masked man, wielding twin blades, ambushes them and exchanges blows with Conrad, buying time for Yuuri’s carriage to escape.

Yuuri’s crew safely arrives at their destination. While Wolfram and Gunther recover from the tedious journey, Yuuri, Yozak, and Conrad make their way to the onsen. However, Conrad stays behind to investigate something and comes face-to-face with Boris, the masked man.

As Yuuri and Yozak take a dip into the hot spring, a silhouette of what looks like to be a pretty girl appears before them. The pretty girl is actually a pretty boy, Sararegi, the young king of Small Cimarron. He invites Yuuri and the others for dinner where he expresses his desire to form an alliance with Shin Makoku. Later that night, Sararegi finds a lone Yuuri and hypnotizes him to go to Small Chimarron.

The next day, Yuuri, along with Conrad and Wolfram, meet Sararegi and Boris outside the lodge as they get ready to set out for Small Chimarron. Meanwhile, Ken Murata and Shori Shibuya find themselves back at Shin Makoku with no less than the original king, Shinou, welcoming them.

Highlights

I loved seeing the KKM gang again. I missed them, especially Gunther and his Yuuri-fawning. Conrad was in mighty good form as well. Wolfram, unfortunately, didn‘t have much time on the limelight and was only left to puke on the sidelines. Here’s some notable treats in the episode:

1. Conrad vs Boris

The fighting scene, although short, was a big improvement from the anime battle scenes. We actually have movement here instead of the sad freeze frame crap.

2. Hawt Spring

Of course, who could pass up Yozak’s towel strip? The steam was appropriately placed to tease us, fangirls. Too bad Gunther, Wolfram, and Conrad wasn’t able to join in on the steaminess

3. Shori, the closet pervert

I laughed when I saw Shori trying hard to hide his dating sim from Ken Murata. Who would have thought that our no-nonsense onii-san is a closet perv?

4. Shinou

The original king in the flesh! How grave could the problem be that the original maou needed to make an appearance? Can’t wait for the next installment!

5. Makeover

Yuuri gets new threads, while Gunter gets a new do. Initially, I didn’t like Gunther’s hair being tied up like that. Though, it quickly grew on me. What can I say? I’m weak ~__~

Overall

The first OVA will be a nice addition to any KKM collection and a must-see for all KKM fangirls. Non-fans of the franchise may not be able to follow the storyline if you jump straight in. Go see the anime first.

The animation and art is better than the TV series, as expected. The close-up shots, most especially, are well-done. The OVA also introduces two original characters: Sararegi and Boris. Both of whom are interesting enough. Sareregi’s true intent has yet to be revealed and he seems to possess great magical powers. He must truly pose quite a threat, since Shinou himself has surfaced. Though, it isn‘t certain that Sareregi is truly a foe, for now. He might just be another Yuuri fanboy, who knows. This episode managed to prop up the stage nicely for a bigger conflict, perhaps between Small Chimarron and Shin Makoku.

The second OVA is scheduled to be released on December 15, 2007. Hopefully, we will get to see Yuuri’s transform to his maou-self then. Next episode, it seems we will be seeing Adalbert and that gheroh guy, whose name escapes me right now.
