What the Heck is ‘Furi Kuri’?

Title: FLCL
Scrumptious Meter: 2.5 (Let them eat cake~with a little extra sugar and spice on top)
Length: 6 episodes

12 year old Nandaba Naoto insists that nothing amazing happens in the town of Mabase. Not even when the huge factory of Medical Mechanica, maker of medical machines, set itself up in town. Everyday, at a set time, white smoke would blow out from the factory spreading out and covering the entire city. Everything, however, changes when a woman in a Vespa scooter, Haruhara Haruko, comes to Mabase and whacks Naota’s head with a bass guitar.

I think the best word to describe FLCL would be “wacky”. It is, however, too wacky for my taste, with crazy characters, absurd predicaments and sexual innuendo here and there. The only trace of sanity would be the main character, Naota. At first, I thought the plot would be slice-of-life but it all changed when Haruko came. Eventually the plot blows up to intergalactic proportions.

Despite the wackiness, one theme of FLCL is maturity. Naoto, wants to be like his brother, Tasuku, whom Naoto thinks as maturity personified. The problem is that most, if not all, grown-ups in Mabase don’t act like one, from Samejima Mamimi, the high school girl who clings to Naota, to Kamon, Naota’s father.

The art of FLCL is good. It’s high-contrast and flat compared to most anime. The band The Pillows provide most of the soundtrack. Well, I guess others might like the OAV. It is popular among Americans after all.

  3. Why are you even blogging this?

    It’s 7 years old.

So? Even if it’s old, it’s still anime. I could even blog about the first Astroboy if I want to.

  5. Droppin by… lol, nice response.

I think FLCL is one of my favorites, and I can understand it’s popularization in US by Adult Swim, but the real deal about FLCL is it’s dynamics.

The OVA braids a nice array of characters, situations, emotions, and themes in such a short period of time that there is usually something for the viewer to enjoy. I thought the premise was cool, fun, and much lighter than Gainax’s NGE.

Sitting down with this year’s Gurren Lagann, some of the inspiration that went into FLCL shines in TTGL. Though, I’m not sure how FLCL would be experienced today if it were to air. That’s just a question of how timeless is it? Viewer tastes may be very different from 7 years ago, and it’s probably impossible to tell because nobody was animeblogging in 2000.

So yea, maybe FLCL isn’t for you now, but what about the you from 7 years ago? lol, redundant question.

    Trends change, moe just happened.
    ^^ just dropping by…

Yeah, I wonder how I would find FLCL if I saw it when it first came out.

I do admit FLCL isn’t bad. The direction is interesting, as expected from Gainax. I also like the Mamimi angle (my favorite episode would be the second). I like Eri too. I also find Naota interesting. And oh, I like Canti. I guess I just don’t like Haruko. Lol.
