To Those Who Ever Dreamed of Becoming Miaka in the World of Fushigi Yuugi…

(Here goes another round of ‘fillers’ as I finish off the rest of my posts… Really need to focus >_<''')

Fushigi Yuugi PS2 game

Anyone still remember Fushigi Yuugi? The shoujo craze more than a decade back, loaded with a heap of bishounens, most of whom unfortunately fall head over heels for the whiny heroine Miaka. Well FY is back, bringing with it a chance to fulfill the very fangirl’s wish of the Suzaku no Miko! Having a PS2 is a requirement however, since the upcoming FY game is slated to be released on this console, this coming May 29, 2008.

You’ll be playing as Madoka Ootori, the “Miaka” in this game, interact with the characters, like any visual novel / renai adventure otome games. She reminds me of Alice from Alice 19th.

I’ve gone past my FY addiction days, so I’m not as excited over this game as I probably would have years back. The drastic changes in the character designs doesn’t help much either. The characters became chubby, less hawt, smexy and bishie! And Chichiri’s hair has been dyed blonde/light brown too! I have no qualms about the female charas, since they look pretty good to me.

All the voice actors have been changed as well, so we won’t get to hear SekiTomo’s Chichiri “no da~!” goodness ;___; Nevertheless, it would be interesting to see the take of these new FY seiyuus on the characters, considering some of my fave seiyuus are also part of the cast:

Tamahome - Miyano Mamoru (Tamaki of Ouran HC, Light of Death Note, Setsuna of Gundam00)
Hotohori - Katsuyuki Konishi (Tooya of Ayashi no Ceres, Soubi of Loveless, Kamina of TTGL)
Nuriko - Junko Minagawa (Ryouma - PoT, Ritsuka of Loveless, Genbu of Shounen Onmyouji)
Chichiri - Kouki Miyata (Ken Murata of KKM, Shimon of HaruToki, Yukito of Tsubasa RC)
Tasuki - Kousuke Toriumi (Kouga of Basilisk, Hayate of Pretear, Sengoku of PoT)

I’m still not sure what will become of Miyano Mamoru’s rendition of Tamahome, but I have faith in his versatility. I am pleased to see that Katsuyuki Konishi has been chosen for Hotohori, because that’ll make him more hawt than he was with Takehito Koyasu’s rendition. Junko Minagawa is a great pick for Nuriko as well. I haven’t heard much of Kousuke Toriumi to know how his Tasuki portrayal will go. I’m most worried about the seiyuu for Chichiri… =/ Still, my greatest qualm about this game is the non-conformance to Yuu Watase’s original character designs =___=

Another Fushigi Yuugi game was previously released btw, about the Genbu side of the story. And that game had the privilege of having Yuu Watase as its character designer…

I’ll be sure to *cough* get *cough* this game, to add to my otome games collection, though I’m not sure if I’ll be able to play it. Try it out for a couple of minutes or hours perhaps, and see if it piques my interest perhaps.

  1. WHAT??? a BLONDE Chichiri NOT voiced by Seki Tomokazu??? (And why Kouki Miyata of all ppl?) Blasphemous! Besides Miyano Mamoru voicing Tamahome, the new cast just seems weird to me

  2. If you wanna be Miaka you need to have the endurance of a marathon runner so you can always run after Tamahome while bawling your eyes out.

  3. Well, Watase’s original Chichiri was brunette anyway. The anime people just decided to make it blue.
Um…anyway, yes I was surprised with the new cast but I got over it quickly because this is suppose to be a new story. That mangaish picture looks nicer than the actual game pictures…but I’m still upset that Watase was not the game designer in this one too. I was hoping that this game would be more RPGish like Haruka…but I guess that was hoping too much.

  4. @issa-sa: It realllyyy feels weird in the perspective of someone who have become so used to hearing the anime seiyuus, to the point of identifying the character with the seiyuu himself/herself. I’m still giving the new cast the benefit of the doubt though. We’ll see… ~__~

@Kabitzin: LOL! just the sight of Miaka is enough to make you exasperated, so I think it’d be better not to look at her as a “role model” :p

@Hazuki: I have the same disappointment sentiment =/ Yuu Watase’s character designs would’ve at least, made up for the new seiyuu cast. But no, they made it look more hideous! If the new seiyuu cast turns out bad, this game will suffer visuals-wise and voice-wise.

  5. aww, come on! after all these years they come up with this game?

not that i wasnted tob emiaka… i hated her! she doesn’t have enough brains to stop herself ending up naked in someone else’s room or tried being raped. ehehehe.

people have grown up! heeheehee

anyway, it would ahve been nicer if this was a few years back where the only thing i could think of was anime and school (plus a little extra-curriculars on the sides).

thanks for the entry though. you gonna try it?

  6. @KaeBoo: hahaha, what I was trying is to say is how we want to be in Miaka’s place, and choose the bishies we want! Not be crybaby emo like Miaka… I hate her too xD

I’m giving this a try… for the heck of it :P

  7. LOL it will sell well because of the seiyuu cast XD
    and Neoromance comes to mind

I just hope that the Suzaku no Miko won’t have a Miaka personality~~

  8. @Mei: yeah, this is FY: Neoromance version XD

I’m pretty sure the new Suzaku no Miko here isn’t as whiny and annoying like Miaka. And she looks cuter! :3

  9. I was quite surprised when I learned of this game and the change in the seiyuu cast. Do you have any idea why the cast might have been changed? I mean yes, FY was pretty old, but I woud have thought the entire of the old seiyuu cast are still in the business and can be hired again. Or maybe they all got too famous and expensive to hire? :p Though that doesn’t make sense since the new seiyuu cast is probably just as in demand as the old cast. So I suppose the other plausible explanations could be that the seiyuu weren’t interested in rehashing old roles or the company making the game just wanted to have a change for whatever unknown reason.

I’m actually kind of interested to try this game just to hear how the new cast sounds like, actually, especially since I like a lot of the new seiyuu. :)

  10. @modorenai: I think they’re trying to freshen up the image of the FY characters? ^^;;;;

and yeah, the new cast makes me want to try this game, if only to see how it will fit the characters.
