Ookiku Furikabutte - 26 (The Unaired Episode)

The 9th DVD installment of Oofuri was out last February 27 and it came with a very nice surprise—an unaired episode of Oofuri!!! The episode is entitled 「基本のキホン」, which means “The Basics of the Basics”.

Fanservice? For guys? Ahh… what happened Oofuri?!

I was sorely disappointed that this episode was just purely about Musashino, Haruna’s team. When I saw this chapter in the manga before, I didn’t bother to read it or try and understand it, because it didn’t have any exciting baseball bits nor were there anything about our lovely Nishiura boys. There were just a long conversation between Haruna and the relief pitcher, Kaguyama, whom we saw during the 15th episode. I think the events that transpired here happened before Koshien, or not…

Just a quick walkthrough of the events: Haruna and Kaguyama are out late exercising and practicing. Walking towards the field, they talk about a short spat between Ookawa, the captain(?), and Haruna over Haruna’s 80-pitch rule.

Kaguyama reveals that he wants to quit baseball. He is tired of sitting on the bench, never winning a single match. Haruna is about to share his own experience when– Ookawa and Miyashita appear from the bushes. They quickly apologize and tells that they are interested in hearing Haruna’s story. So, Haruna goes on to tell his little tale about him having the “overuse” syndrome, his injury, his painful rehabilitation, and his stint with SENIOR.

Haruna challenged Kaguyama to 50-meter dash duel. With a little help from Miyashita, they brainwashed Kaguyama into thinking that if he really tried, he can beat Haruna. Although, Kaguyama did not beat Haruna, he beat his own best record, shaving .7 seconds from his running time! From there on, Kaguyama regained his fire and passion for the game.

Thoughts

This was a pretty boring episode. Not even a single scene with any of our Nishiura boys!!! Rant rant rant rant rant. However, this was still a feel good episode, which Oofuri is known for.

>_< See Haruna is annoyed as I am!

Haruna employed the placebo effect on Kaguyama, leading him to think that he could win against him, although in reality he couldn’t. However, this was enough for Kaguyama to realize that there is still a lot of room for improvement and that he can still be a better player. Blah blah blah… I want more Tajima!!!

This whole episode would have been a complete waste, if not for Haruna’s sexeh bodeh and his shocked expression after finding out that Miyashita and Ookawa are together. Other than that though… * sigh *

  3. This is no SPECIAL! rawr!
and yeah, Haruna’s hawt bodeh was the only saving grace for this episode. It would’ve been cute if we also see a Haruna x manager rabu rabu developments, but sigh… T_T

  6. awh hahah I actually loved this episode to pieces  but I guess this is to be expected from a Musashino fan :P I’ve been looking forward to the extra chapter being aired, so that others would understand Haruna better

  7. I’ve been looking forward to seeing this! I think a lot of Oofuri fans knew well in advance that the unaired episode would be about Haruna/Musashino, since the episode title was released a month or two before the DVD came out. :)

I think it was a good choice for the extra. It’d be kind of strange to watch a pieced-together Nishiura episode composed of random unaired moments, or an anime-only set-up (since they seem to be pretty devoted to closely following Higuchi’s manga)… and continuing on with the story would be weird too, especially if they’re hoping for a second season in the future. T^Tb

  9. I think it’s lame how you don’t like it because it’s not Nishiura. This is less a summary than a blog entry and whining, so you know — it’s not actually useful.

  10. @issa-sa At least you have something to look forward to :D

@double Yes, I am interested in knowing what will happen as the teams advance to the next round

    @usagijen I know what you mean ;)

@Miyuki There were a lot of funny and light moments with Haruna as well which was fun to watch too

@GreenGreen I forgot what volume it was though where this episode was taken.

@Koji I liked how they fleshed out Haruna a bit more, but it was more Kaguyama-centric than it was about Haruna really.

@JaB I didn’t know that it was going to be about Musashino, thus my disappointment. I would have liked some random moments hehe, but that’s just me. I kinda thought it would be nice if Ren’s childhood was animated or those other omake with Ren and his dad.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts :)

@wriXeL The series is quite solid and the characters are really good. It was one of the better offerings of last year. I highly recommend you watch it.

@Keuke I provided a brief and objective summary. My thoughts are my thoughts and I can whine if I wanted and if you do not care to read them, then just skip the THOUGHTS section of this entry. Simple as that.

  11. aw :( I was excited about this episode! now not so much! I mean it’s good to see more Haruna, but.. without Abe in the mix, um, meh.

Does anyone know if there’ll be a Season2 in anime? :( 26 episodes is just NOT ENOUGH.

  12. Thank you for the summary!

For one thing, I’m relieved to read that its about Haruna and his team. Which means that the episode is not that all important, for Nishiura’s part in a way.

So those who relied on fansubbers than the DVD can rest easy! :D

Still, its great that they featured Haruna in the last episode because he plays a certain role to the both Abe and Mihashi.

I like the ending for the anime though. Preserves the good feeling of the show that we came to like 8D

  13. Thanks so much for blogging and scanning every episode of Ookiku.
Your detailed descriptions make my reminiscing of the anime much more detailed and well, BL filled.
You’ve taken a lot of time out for this, and I’m thankful.
I’m hopeful that season two will come out, or at least a match between Haruna and Abe, (which would make one HELL of a season),
But if I cant find the episodes to rewatch, your reviews will surely suffice.
    Thanks again.
    Love :D
