Ok, so Itazura na Kiss aired just a few days ago and many people are complaining about its crappy artwork. It just makes me sigh. Young’ns nowadays don’t know how to appreciate good oldschool 80’s or 90’s shoujo art. Tsk. I might sound old, but I assure you, I am not!
As a shoujo manga/anime lover, I absolutely enjoyed the Itazura na Kiss anime. I FREAKIN LURVVVED IT TO BITS! It might not have the same charm as Ouran Koukou, but its simplicity, slice-of-life feel and shoujo fluff romance comedy aspects (especially the normal optimistic girl x badass tsundere guy predicament) were enough to draw me in. Shoujo fluff, I missed you~!! This is the perfect way to take a break from the emo ride of KimiKiss and True Tears! \o/
There were slight changes made to the anime, like the addition of Kotoko’s dream sequence at the start of the episode, the stalker Naoki-mom scenes, as well as changes in the kanjis Yuuki (Naoki’s brother) was asking Kotoko for help with. But all in all I liked the changes they made, since It actually spiced things up :3 Looking forward to more Itazura na Kiss!
And now for the ones who think the artwork of Itazura na Kiss sucks, I dare you to look at something worse, its original manga and its Taiwan drama counterpart (aesthetics wise).
So, compare this…
…with this…
or even this…
No offense against Ariel Lin, but she looked more stupid and less cute in the It Started With A Kiss drama, than how she was supposed to be in the manga/anime =____=

Chins………SO BIG.
I guess most of the girls like this show so far……since….it’s for girls. :3
Haha I welcome this show with open arms
i’d rather watch a good old animation shoujo show than “better animated” fanservicey shit that’s plaguing the spring season
Youngins are spoiled, that’s what. They don’t remember the good old days of Escaflowne and the ridiculously long noses. (oh Folken, how I miss thee)
Yeah, the art of the manga is pretty bad. I like the story and everything, but I couldn’t read past chapter ten because I felt like the art was infecting my imagination.
But yay for anime and cleaner, more attractive artwork!
Having to live with someone who despises her; and who she thinks is a jerk but likes…
~ Oh so intersesting! \o/
It’s not the chins that bother me in older-style artwork as much the enormous Roswell-alien craniums, or as I like to say, “Dragonball Head.”
In the manga, Naoki’s head is easily a third bigger than it ought to be. orz
The anime artwork, to me, seems like generic anime style with some reference to the old-style, not-so-great artwork from whence it came. I can deal with that. I’m not really picky about artwork in anime unless there are complete breakdowns in quality or you can see where the animation company is cutting corners/being lazy. (Naruto, I’m looking at you.)
The story is entertaining so this is a definite pickup, though I probably won’t be going back to look up the source material. ^^
I don’t think people are complaining about the style of artwork, per se, but rather the horrible quality of the first episode. There were a lot of still scenes, plus people in this anime walked like they were robots due to the budget-saving techniques of the animators…
Argh, I can’t stand this anime! LOL! Only cos the artwork, hehe :3
I really like the anime, especially compared to the manga and the Taiwanese drama. But the jdrama on the other hand wasn’t that bad, was it? Kassy (Kashiwabara Takashi) who played Irie-kun was HOT(!), and Sato Aiko did a good job portraying Kotoko. Though it’s true her ears were as big as satellite dishes
Yay, another Itazura na Kiss fan!
I think anyone who’s read the manga first can see that the anime art is much better than it could have been. Kin-chan still makes me grimace a bit, but he also makes me think of Kuwabara from Yu Yu Hakusho. Which makes me giggle
I’ll definitely be following this series as well ^^
Hmm, what’s next, a “Tenshi Nanka Ja Nai” series beyond that OVA?
Wow… the manga’s art really sucks. Well, it’s not my thing I guess…
But I totally love the series! You’re right! It takes me back to 90s-style anime which generaly got me into anime back then
At least, there’s an anime out there that relies more on a story than flashy animation and fanservice
The first episode was a tad below my expectations but I’d be watching this one anyway.
I’m curious how Irie will do the turnaround after being that cold and mean to her.
@totali: you just don’t like old school shoujo totali, pif~! >3
@Hinano: yesh~! (though then again, I’m enjoying ToLoveRu, for reasons I can’t exactly explain myself lol)
@L-chan: well in defense of Escaflowne, the art style is unique, despite being old school
but yeah, it’s sad to see that the younger generations are less tolerant when it comes to ‘generic’-looking artworks o_O
@Nagato: Gotta love tsuntsun guys and strong women!
@apex: haha, the manga artwork will really get in the way of your enjoyment of it. So I suggest just sticking to the anime, till you love it so much, enough to tolerate the manga art :p
@Asuka: I honestly didn’t have that impression, but then again it could be because I’m biased towards these shows
@biankita: yes, shoujo shows like this need not rely on fanservice to draw its audience :p
@hazy: I’d love to see the day Irie eats his own words, go show that bastard what he deserves, Kotoko!
The manga art doesn’t actually look that bad at all. Naoki is kind of strange-looking, but he looks more like he walked out of the 80s rather than hideous. Kotoko herself looks perfectly fine, to me, especially in that first shot.
Taking bets as to whether or not I’ll be the only guy who is going to follow this series. I plan to profit on this enterprise.
I totally love the dragon ball + ranma 1/2 esque artwork! Totally brings the old school feel to this anime, and thats good!
What bothers me though, is the inconsistency in the character design in ep. 2
Everything else is peachy though!
I love 80’s and 90’s anime style! I hate the new “all computer generated” style, it has not spirit, feeling…. nothing
@OGT: hehe, there’s shoujo-loving Impz who’s most likely going to follow this too. That, and my brother as well lol.
@ez: yeah, I noticed the inconsistencies in ep2, but I didn’t let it bother me much
@LALA: oldschool artwork banzai! \o/
Haha, oh wow, that is some fantastically ugly manga art (by today’s standards at least). I got around to seeing it today — all it took for me was one episode to like it, at least way more than Special A. As for the Taiwan drama counterpart… no. Just… no. 2D stuff should stay 2D.
@Owen: hurray for Itazura! \o/ Despite me dissing the Taiwan drama, it actually is enjoyable, as attested by my officemates lol.
The latest eppie of the anime showed Kotoko slapping Naoki in front of the whole family add Kin-chan and the 2 girls eavesdropping…
That one was priceless…
As for the artwork… heck, yeah, it is old school and it brings back memories of animes from the 80’s era.
As the old cliche goes, “there’s no skool like old skool”

The anime is better than the eye horror that was the manga. If people can stand to read the manga as I’ve heard then the story must be tops!
I’m sorry to hear that the mangaka died and wasn’t able to continue her work. If I may say so, it says she died of cerebral hemorrhage after she bumped her head. What the hell kind of inept doctors didn’t drain out her head huh?!!! >_> sorry…
@KaeBoo: just watched episode 3, and yes, I love the bitchslap scene! We need more of that!
@Shaylahska: it’s a great old school manga, and I think you’ll get used to the artwork as you read more of it
…and bless Kaoru Tada’s soul x__x such a tragic death she had.
