Ahh, Neo Angelique~ Yet another Koei shoujo show that’s not getting any love. Deja vu~ The only ones in the blogosphere who took the time to cover the first episode of this anime were Aroduc, psgels, and recently, BluWacky though all of them already decided that it’s not an anime they want to bother with anymore. I can’t blame them though, given the number of other great shows this Spring (heck even I’m having a hard time choosing which shows I’m going to stick to x_x). Neo Angelique is, after all, a generic-looking shoujo anime, whose bishies serve to lure the likes of fangurls, especially those who got to play the PS2 game(s) *points to self*

Neo Angelique is the latest installment to the Angelique series of games by Koei, and by far, the one with the most pleasant aesthetics value, at least for me. For once, all the guys in the game are hawt and not gay-looking, unlike the earlier Angelique games/animes.

The game was released last March 6, 2006, and was adapted to a manga one month after (I didn’t know about the existence of the manga till recently >_>). A full-voiced version of the game was released just this March 27, 2008, due to incessant public demand and Koei’s money-making evil schemes. From what I’ve seen of the three episodes that aired, the anime is sticking closely to the game, with some added *ahem* fanservice and scenes to accommodate the anime-original characters.

I enjoyed watching Neo Angelique wayy more than Vampire Knight and Special A. If we’re talking about visuals and the quality (and quantity) of the bishies alone, Neo Angelique wins hands down. While Neo Angelique is weak plot-wise, because of the rather cheesy and overused concept of a goddess teaming up with a bunch of guys to defeat the forces of evil, VK and Special A doesn’t really have much plot to begin with anyways. Special A has its fun antics, VK has its vampiric emo angstiness, but I still prefer Neo Angelique anytime. If I were to watch something real fun, I’d go for Itazura na Kiss. *shields herself from the horde of Special A and VK fans*

Then again, the reason why I think this way might be because of my evident bias for the Neo Angelique game, and the certainty that I’ll find this journey more fangurl-scream-and-giggle-inducing than the two aforementioned shoujo shows. Or perhaps I’m just jaded now, as I remember being a Special A and VK fangurl years back. Oh well. Hurray for me, probably the only one in the blogosphere who’s going to faithfully follow Neo Angelique!

As Aroduc and BluWacky has mentioned in their first impression of Neo Angelique, it’s actually pretty decent (and I’d like to think this was their honest opinion on this show). Neo Angelique just chose the wrong season to air, so it’s most likely going to be tossed aside in lieu of the other Spring shows by most people, especially guys who will immediately run away at the sight of the horde of sparkling bishies, like La Corda.

If I were to sum-up Neo Angelique in the simplest and bluntest of words, it’d be a ‘tentacle monster and bishie of the week show’, as we see Angelique’s [reverse] harem grow as the episodes go by, and together they unite to defeat the forces of the evil Thanatos~! On a positive note, despite being Mary Sue-ish, Angelique is a fairly likeable character, not the Angsty Sue type of character like whiny Miaka of FY or the weakling Akane of HaruToki. She’s more like Nozomi of HaruToki3 or Sakura of Card Captor Sakura, with her shy/bashful yet strong personality (and a really beautiful bijin at that~)

Shallow stuff aside, Neo Angelique has a couple of plot twists to spice things up for the show. And although it may not be enough to blow you away or earn it an award any time soon, expect it to be a pleasant watch (given that you surpassed the point of drowning in the bishies). I’m a bit sad that I already know the oh-so-surprising! plot twists at this point in time, but oh well~

Wanting to know more about the bishies characters is one of the main factors which will draw viewers to this show (which applies to other animes as well). With that said, it’s fairly obvious that this was made to appeal to fangurl viewers like me, who spent hours on the game to get Rayne’s ending, only to fail! With the anime, we get to see the events unfold without having to spend hours playing the game!

While I’d heartily recommend this to bishie-loving fangurls, especially those who can tolerate the lack of plot originality (which is quite overrated btw), I’m reluctant to recommend this to guys =/ The only merit for guys I see in this show would be… the lovely Ange lol XD

Expect me to post my regular Neo Angelique rave and fangurl posts from hereon. That said, I shall pour the rest of my energies to Toshokan Sensou next. Yush~!

P.S. Neo Angelique makes me go trigger happy mode when it comes to screenshots, love the pics +___+

  1. Hm looks like the heroine changed
    I thought it was a sequel to the original which btw I couldn’t stand E__E;
The red haired dude looks like a long lost twin of the guy from Brothers~ XD

  2. [webare of crappy english ahead D:]
The bishies were the thing that made me watch this xD, and this made remember the fact that I stopped watching La Corda after the first episode… and then picked it up again when I was bored, and actually enjoyed it. So I will give this chance and enjoy the bishies.
I also can’t decide what to watch this season D: and I also have to finish some series I’ve abandoned xD. For now I’m sticking to this one, Soul Eater, Nabari no Ou and Toshokan (waiting for subs >_>).

  3. I like it when the cat explodes.
I also like it when the girl gets all blushy over her bishies.

I probably shouldn’t be watching this.

  4. I am not sure if I’ll like this one. I will check it out though. I’ll also have to check the prequels to this too. I do like Itazura na Kiss by the way. I might prefer watching that :P

  5. Eh, I probably would’ve watched this if there wasn’t a bishounen stampede from all the other shows this season -_-” And the one with the least bishie looking one (Itazura na Kiss) turns out to be the most worthwhile :P Tell me if this actually turns out better than La Corda (the most tolerable KOEI game adaptation so far imho) and perhaps I’ll follow it XD

  6. @Hinano: this one diverted most from the predecessor Angelique games/anime, with more action, great characters and a better plot (though of course, still far from great). And, I’d like to think that Rayne is much much better than that guy in Brothers XD
@rukomi: you’re English is perfect! :) and yes, enjoy this for the bishies 8D I’m also crossing my fingers that the sub for Toshokan Sensou gets released soon -__-

@totali: everyone can watch this! D: and it’s not like you’re watching this for the wrong reason, aka for the bishies lol.

@Dando008: I’m pessimistic that guys will enjoy this too, hehehe. But do check it out and tell me what you think~

@issa-sa: Itazura na Kiss FTW! \o/ As early as now, I’d say it won’t live up to the beauty of La Corda, considering the depth of the characters there, but hmmm… we’ll see about Neo Angelique XD This series wins in terms of the plot twists though hehehe

  7. Sorry for you about not getting Rayne ’s ending as expected ^_^
Then, whose ending did you get?

  8. I watched the first episode, but didn’t have enough interest for the 2nd. Partly because I didn’t have any special feelings for the main bishie (the white strips among the red hair isn’t my favourite aesthetic eye candy, although other than that he is actually quite bishie), and mostly because I actually cringed at some scenes in the first episode. Can’t remember them much anymore… I think it might be how illogical it seemed that Rayne (that’s the white-strip-red-hair guy, right?) was so easily wounded by some random bad monster (and very low level, at that) and then stupidly stood there in front of the petrified girls getting beaten instead of diverting attention and/or attacking.

By the way, Itazura na Kiss’s second episode has completely regained my attention after the rather shaky start with the first. It is indeed worthy of being a classic. Even if it isn’t aesthetically pleasing. ;)

  9. @CobraStarship: uhm… I got this goddess ending, aka no guys! T__T

@Briar: haha, I’d have to admit the action in Neo Angelique is lame and stupid, but I find it a trivial thing for this show XD I’m focusing simply on the characters, the plot (no matter how weak), and how things will be developed as a whole, despite the lack of exciting action.

  10. It sounds like my kind of show! Yay for the fangril syndrom! I will simply ignore the bashing of VK. (Angrily screams and pops a barbies head) Can’t wait for this and Shugo Chara posts! Have fun blogging!

  11. Hey, we all need our guilty cheese shows, right? So what if this is as generic as a Big Mac, it’s pretty and fun!

And we cannot overlook the the OP either! I am normally not a big fan of OP/ED that use all the bishie to sing them, as the majority are lame, but this one is decent! I like it! And how can you not like a song called “Joy to the World”?

  12. Oh my god, just looking at these screenshots, all the bishies…ALL THE BISHIES! MUST NOT WATCH! MUST NOT WATCH! (I want to so badly.) I’m already watching 8 others, I’m in over my head as is…and another one…Oh god, and Toshokan Sensou. Has anyone subbed Toshokan Sensou? That’s my second must watch show this season and I’ve only seen the opening! T_T

  13. oh my its looks interesting… usagijen, what about shugo chara :( ?

  14. @cresentdremer: haha XD yes, never mind my VK bash , that’s just me :p Stick around and you’ll see more eyecandies from Neo Angelilque and Shugo Chara +__+

@L-chan: yay for cheesy shoujo! As hashihime and other members of AniSuki has pointed out, Neo Angelique is generic, but in a good way. And of course, compared to the hideous SA OP and subpar ED, the OP/ED by the seiyuus of this show is just great~! It’s even better than HaruToki’s OP/ED, which I think are great songs too.

@Xerox: yeah, subbers need to be poked! I do know however, that someone’s planning to do something to uplift the fans from this dilemma, so rest assured! Oh, and you can just marathon Neo Angelique after it airs ;) In the meantime, enjoy the eyecandies~! XD

@kazumaXX: hehe, don’t worry about Shugo Chara, it’s in the works, and I plan to have that out before the next chapter comes out! XD

  16. The opening of the first episoded I moed when I heard those cheesy lines~! XD
Watching this made feel sad for Koisuru Tenshi Angelique…since the art wasn’t lovely.
But like you…I’m watching this show for the characters not for the story…

  17. Ok, so I did watch the first three episodes of Neo Angelique Abyss and I do find it pretty interesting. In fact, I’ll be watching the rest of the series among with the other anime I watch. I say it has a nice storyline, good action scenes, and Angelique is pretty cute too.
