The uber fast monster speed of the anime somewhat forced me to go and Deep Fry Toshokan Sensou like I did with Kaze no Stigma. The Toshokan Sensou anime might be reallly impressive at this point, but it’s even better if you know the missing antics and tidbits in between. So yeah, hopefully I’ll be able to fill in those stuff for you guys!
And, I was supposedly taking down notes on the stuff omitted in episodes 1-2 of Toshokan Sensou, detail by detail, till episode 3 comes down like a BOMB and as I check what it covered in the novel, I see that it skipped 100+ pages! Now before I struggle over whether to skip reading some parts too, I shall go and talk about the differences I’ve seen in episode 1 first.
First off, to provide more insights regarding the Library, here’s a portion of what’s written in their “Library Liberation Act”, particularly Article 4 “The Freedom of the Library” (and my side comments included)
Section 30. The Library shall have the freedom to gather resources (books, and other media).
Section 31. The Library shall have the freedom to provide resources (hence they have the Library establishment where people can borrow books and stuff)
Section 32. The Library shall protect the privacy of its users.
Section 33. The Library shall be against any form of unjust examination (of media).
Section 34. The Library shall stand united to protect this freedom no matter what. (RAWR)
Iku’s Family Background
Iku is the only daughter among four older children in their family, hence her tomboyish GAR attitude. She became fond of books when she was young, and was often laughed at because it doesn’t fit her image. She found herself in the company of friends who accepted her for who she is when she entered high school and joined the track team, where a number members share the same love for books. Now regarding the book she tried to protect from the clutches of MIB, it was actually the long-awaited sequel of the book she’s been following, which took 10 years to be published. So you can just imagine how thankful she was to her prince who saved that book for her.
The Judo Sparring Scene
I’ve already shown this in my earlier Toshokan Sensou pimpings, but here it is anyways
Doujou volunteers to be Iku’s judo sparring partner, and the guys are in uproar because of how unfair this was for them. Doujou reminds the guys not to look down on Iku, considering how she doesn’t even seem like a woman with her strength. Iku scoffs at Doujou, warning him that she actually has the height advantage in this fight. Doujou had the last laugh however, as he wins against Iku without a struggle. Doujou scoffs back at Iku because he won despite his lack of height (which Iku insulted earlier), Iku gets pissed, and the next thing we know, she gives him a surprise drop kick from behind
Doujou fights back and gives her the punishment she deserves looool.
This was included in the anime, but a shorter version was shown
More Sweet Moments
During the conversation between Komaki and Iku after the class ended (timeline 11:27+ of the first episode), Komaki supposedly gave Iku a pat on the head before explaining the reason behind Doujou’s unfair treatment of her, and she was reminded of her prince who did the same gesture.
Now during Doujou and Iku’s surprise confrontation in the lobby after the stabby otaku event, Doujou supposedly gave Iku a pat on the head when she was crying ;___; (that was really sweet… Doujou goes dere mode~)
Though, Iku ruins the sweet moment as she compares the feel of Doujou and Komaki’s pat earlier, and came to the conclusion that the difference lies in the height of Doujou, as she blurts out her thoughts out loud “It’s because Instructor Doujou is smaller than Instructor Komaki” And Doujou goes all tsuntsun again and gives her a slap for the insult
Then, it went the same way in the anime, where Iku declared that she’s not giving up!
Oh, and Genda refers to Iku as Doujou’s blue-eyed boy by the way (though I do think this was also mentioned in the anime, albeit in-passing), coz she’s like Doujou’s favorite student
While the anime decided to show the Superintendent only in episode 2, he supposedly made an appearance way before that. He was first shown to be some random guy in a wheelchair, and Iku unknowingly helps him out to get to the elevator, thinking he’s one of the guests lol. So much to Iku’s surprise that this random old guy turned out the be the superintendent, when she finally met him during her appointment as one of the members of the Special Task Force :3
Afterthoughts
Ok, this deep frying turned out shorter than I expected… o_o I’d like to think that my post on episode 2 will be longer because of how its speed caught me off-guard, like “woah wait a second, halt halt D:”
Till next time! Ja!
I wish that they made this series for 26 episodes instead of 12…
How many novels have been published? Is the story already complete?
OMG, how could they leave out Doujo’s head-patting scene! Now you’ve made me want to go out this instance and buy the (shoujo) manga! (which are probably a whole lot cheaper and easier to read than the hardcover novels, but those are just as tempting…)
Omg Jen, you are awesome. ^^ Thanks for the yummy info!! Especially the Library Liberation Act, that really cleared a lot of confusion for me. The manga art looks pretty, can’t wait for it to be scanlated!!
I’ve been waiting for this ^___^ hehe, ahh I wished they could’ve added that dere-dere mode of Doujou at the lobby T___T I was ready to go ~kyaa but it didn’t happen. Mayhap 13 episodes is not enough. I’m glad though, that they used the character design from the shoujo manga especially for Doujou.
I like the anime pictures better
@Georgina: how I wish for that too
but oh well, we can’t have everything we want. The novel is complete at four volumes, and this extra (love-filled) volume has been recently released
@issa-sa: yes, I heartily recommend the Toshokan Sensou shoujo manga! It’s got lots of shoujo-manga-additional scenes too, fangurl-biased!!
@faye: know what, I had a dream that chapters 1-3 of this manga was scanlated rofl. I just hope that will come true!!
@kai_yukari: well we can still go “kyaa~” at the manga
but yeah, the character design of the anime is close to being shoujo-ey (and better than the manga even!), so it’s all good =D
@Blissmo: me too, Blissmo, but the manga is <33 because of its faithfulness to the novel, and the added fangirl stuff it included
Thanks Jen! I can actually hope for a romantic resolution =D
I didn’t mind the shorter version of the the judo sparring. The mini recap that Iku did was able to keep the funny bits in, chibi mode to boot.
I agree with issa-sa… how can they leave out the head pat “discrepancy” that Iku noted! xDDD Just seeing Doujou’s reaction on Iku’s comment was funny in that manga page, seeing that animated would’ve been more awesome!
Thanks for the Toshokan deep frying! Looking forward to more. Toshokan needs more love!
BTW, I love your real-time comment preview feature! ^^
Thanks for the expose, it really helped me appreciate the anime more.
Wish the scene of Doujou patting Iku’s head was included in the anime though.
Actually, I’m glad that the manga lobby scene was not recreated in the anime, since you mentioned that Dojo slaps Kasahara for insulting him. That doesn’t put Dojo in good light, really. He was more dere dere in the anime.
I’m glad that anime did not use the manga’s lobby scene, since you mentioned that Dojo slapped Kasahara for insulting him. I find that to be out-of-character for Dojo and a possible abuse of power. He was much cooler the way he was portrayed in the anime.
Nonetheless, thanks for filling in all the other missing details, especially the crucial sections of the Library Freedom Act.
English subs — not the most polished but I’m not picky — through ep3 have surfaced. Yahoo! this is just as fun as you said it was.
You really kept Tezuka’s attitude change under wraps. That really surprised me. Nice job not spilling the beans. I didn’t pick up on your careful language at all when you first wrote about his character… *also trying to be vague for sake of others*
Maybe I’m too used to American military movies or something, but there seems to be a lot of mouthing off to your superiors in this outfit.
Woohoo for subbed Library Wars! Just saw it yesterday and thought it was awesome! <3 Doujou :). But wait, only 12 episodes seriously??? awww…I’m afraid to ask, I bet the manga isn’t translated in English yet either…?
@Georgina: The romance will certainly be resolved in this one, I have that much faith. Despite the action and other elements of the show, I’d like to think that aspect is given quite a priority.
@hazy: yeah, the anime judo sparring scene was cute and funny, but I loved the exchange of remarks they had in the novel/manga
and I really wish the sweet pat scene was in the anime, but oh well… seeing it in the manga is good enough =D
@Setsuna-san: yay! It’s my goal to make people love Toshokan Sensou more so I’m glad you appreciated this =D
@TinyRedLeaf: oh did I say slap… it’s a smack rather. And it doesn’t really put Dojo in a bad light coz it’s a playful smack on the head, like what close buddies do sometimes
The manga showed him to be more tsundere imo hehehe, just look at that blush!
@apex: understandable English subs can be tolerated
and yes, I really kept myself from revealing that juicy info… but I never thought the anime will show it as soon as episode 2!
and the mouthing off in this anime just makes things all the more fun and interesting!
@Susie: yeah, apparently it’s going to run for 12 eps, and considering how they will be able to condense one entire volume in more or less 4 episodes… looks like that’s the case indeed
Oh, wow, there definitely are some juicy bits that got left out. I found the anime a little hard to summarize, to be honest.
The plot/setting still bothers me, though.
MAN! I had a feeling they were missing something in the anime DX The patting on Iku’s head by Doujo ;__; I was actually waiting for it…
I finally caught up with the anime and it’s friggin AWESOME! 8D Though I had to keep repeating a few parts since I didn’t really understand that well ^^;
But this is seriously good 8D I wish I could read the manga somewhere…
@Nagato: I think one of the reasons why the anime is so hard to summarize is because of the lack of details to facilitate the ‘flow’ of the entire episode. Oh and don’t let the silly plot get to you so much, just laugh at it if you want
@Tomochii-chan: woot! glad you caught up! now I have to do my part and catch up writing too lol. How I wish the manga was published wayy earlier, only volume 1 is out so far, and it’ll take more months before the next volume comes out =.=; I do hope it gets licensed though =3
hm, there’s one volume out, that’s correct.
i think i’ve found the raw scans of the shoujou manga somewhere on the net, but unfortunately they were password protected. >3<
then i thought of importing the manga but it would take too long, also it would be too expensive.
A scanlation would be fine, but i’d be already happy with the raws.
oh i almost forgot, doujou is cool. i really like his tsundere character. plus, i’m happy that TS is rather unknown. that makes it an insiders’ tip for us. but on the other side: chances to be scanlated = 0.
Thanks for all these information, I wish there will be a second season because 12 episodes is too short.
Anybody knows where to find the scans for the Shoujo version ?
I’ve just found the scans of the Shounen version up to chapter 5, but Doujou is not as cute as in the Shoujo version.
