Scrumptious Version 2.0 and the [Accidental] Blog Upgrade

Paranoid as the chefs are, we never got to upgrade our blog to WP 2.3. We talked about some upgrade plans months back, and even spent quite a deal looking for a new spunky theme for our blog, on top of checking plugin compatibility issues. I fell in love with The Morning After theme, but due to the busy life of the chefs that time, on top of uncertainties if the upgrade will go well and an advice from Maestro not to upgrade to 2.3 yet, no blog upgrade(s) happened, not even a banner change!

Months passed, we celebrated our first year anniversary with our old and rusty banner/theme, and WP 2.5 gets released. We heard great things about it, but still remained paranoid as ever. Then I found this Instant Upgrade plugin to automate the installation/upgrade process, making it easy and safe. And I remain paranoid orz. So what I did was to test it first in a local copy of wordpress I have, to see if the upgrade will go smoothly. The upgrade process in my local wordpress blog got stuck in the first phase of downloading the latest wordpress release, and it finally became successful after a little workaround. I installed the plugin in our blog here, then tested it to see if I’ll encounter the same problem with my local copy. With a blink of an eye, the blog got upgraded… o.O I was expecting the installation won’t proceed or something, but oh well. Voila, the site has been upgraded! with just one broken plugin ^^;;

Then last night, after watching ROOKIES, I got all pumped up and started tweaking The Morning After theme, and the result is this magazine looking blog. Thanks to fellow chef absolute0, our banner has finally changed but still gay as ever. So now we also have gravatars, author avatars (manually coded, sucky programming x__x;; ), [not-yet-annotated] blogroll, dropdown archives and recent posts to save space, etc. Other tasks left to do would be finishing the contact form page, [re]arranging the sidebar widgets, fixing the comment form and basically tweak the style further for better readability and navigation. Have to find a better recent comment plugin too, unless I want to code/tweak it myself… @__@;;;

Feel free to drop your comments here! Comments and suggestions would be highly appreciated ^^

  1. Well, I like it! My only worry is that the small text size will combine with the nice wide column to encourage excessively long paragraphs, but then I’m fairly obsessed with these relativeley unimportant details (as Mike recently revealed to the world).

    Oh, and the comment preview thing below the commenting box runs all the lines in a paragraph over the top of each other, unless you start a whole new paragraph (here’s an image of this in action: http://img516.imageshack.us/img516/1750/commentme6.jpg).

  2. Congratulations on the upgrade/update! The Morning After’s a lovely theme - I’m probably going to use it, or The Unstandard, for a future layout?

    Definitely not going to Scrumptious through RSS feeders from now on. XD

  3. Ahh, ROOKIES would do that to you, wouldn’t it? I’m so anxious for more subs seeing as it’s up to 5 in RAWS but complaining never got any subs out so I can only wait.

    I too had the overlapping problem. Otherwise, it looks pretty good.

  4. As mentioned in IRC I like this theme. It’s dead sophist’. Good work :3

  5. Nice design! The only other problem I noticed is that if you increase the font size +1 in the browser, your entire Search/Pages menu disappears, presumably behind the banner. It also sinks down in Safari. I doubt many people will do that but you never know. I think it’s just a positioning problem. Other than that, very nice, very clean, and your header is awesome.

  6. I also think you need to increase the font size a notch. I already have my font setting a little higher than normal, and i found it hard to read the post properly. Otherwise not a bad design :)

  7. I think it’s wonderful, though like Caitlin said a text size increase might be a problem. You might also want to consider making the comment form a little larger… I feel like I’m being squeezed as I’m typing this, xP.

  9. XD Still getting used to the new format, especially the “just one latest post”. XD

    I’m a paranoid with version updates too. Haven’t upgraded our SMF forum nor our wordpress in fear that our mods/plug-ins won’t work after! XD And we’ve installed so many!

  11. thanks for the feedback, guys! I’m glad the response for this change is generally favorable ^^

    @IKnight and Os: the live comment preview is messed up indeed… still tweaking the style sheet =.=;;

    @Caitlin: thanks for being the devil’s advocate then, I’ll see what I can do to remedy that.

    @Tiamat: yeah, gonna adjust the font size for the poor readers xD

    @Nagato: lol, point taken, that change shall reflect in my upcoming update of this theme.

    @Soshi: ohh The Unstandard is lovely D: I would’ve used it if not for the Hemingway-like style of the columns… but then again I could’ve just modified that o.O Oh well I’m gonna stick to this now XD

    @Fangli: I’m still gonna change that later… like have 3 “latest posts” or something :3

  13. It’s me again…the floating/disappearing search/menu portion of your site is fixed in Firefox 3 RC 1 (just upgraded). Maybe whatever’s the issue with Firefox 2 and Safari is being worked out in future browsers?

    And I do like your design. :(

  20. Great job with the new design. Me likes! You also gave me the courage to upgrade my Wordpress too. Went from 2.3.2 -> 2.5.1 with ease using that plugin you found. Thanks!! :)

  21. @Nekonron: I’m still going to change the sidebar, I just hope it won’t get so cluttered ^^;;

    @Caitlin: eh why the sad face D: I think I’m getting quite lazy to solve that problem too, so I’m afraid I’ll leave it to the browsers to fix this issue lol.

    @KaeBoo: lol, so much for a total design change XD At least the site is more aesthetically appealing now :3

    @LDC: thanks ^^

    @Deranged: you’re still not studying?! /me takes out her whip
    anyways, God Bless in your finals! don’t sacrifice it for other things =[

    @Setsuna: LOL, yeah, real gay XD

    @Tuna: glad to help! :3

  22. I have to agree with everyone with regards to the banner — it’s e even more gay than the previous one. But congratulations on your upgrade nevertheless, it’s kinda overdue.

    I’d have to say include Recent Posts in your sidebar at least, since it’s a lot easier to navigate around your blog that way. A calendar is always good but not mandatory, and a blogroll is fine too? Needs a poll too.

  23. May I ask how the hell you got your gravatars to be like that on the left? Like what was the CSS tags you used? My gravatars are so Facked up I’m about to disable the entire freaking plugin =_=;;
    love the new layout btw

  25. I thought I got lost in the blogosphere, but then realized you updated the layout! I kinda miss the old colors (my eyes still need to adjust xD) but this is a nice simple layout, I like it. Congrats on the upgrade/update! ^_^

    Oh and I agree that the header is more gay than the last one. xDD

  26. I can’t believe I forgot to reply to the comments here :roll:

    @Owen: aye aye sir, thanks for the suggestions! The Recent Posts thing was already in the works before, but I just had to find a way to make it less cluttering for the sidebar, so you now see a dropdown recent posts. It’s just not so aesthetically pleasant, but oh well. We shall have a poll, real soon. Or so I hope.

    @Hinano: I hope you get that problem sorted out :|

    @hazy: it’s quite a big change so yeah XD I’m glad you like it 8)
