To other worlds with Yoshitoshi Abe

Yoshitoshi Abe is one of my favorite Japanese illustrators. He is famous for his work in Serial Experiments Lain, NieA_7, Haibane Renmei and Texhnolyze.

One thing that I like about his art is the degree of realism in it. Compared with most anime/manga art which are simplistic in portrayal, Yoshitoshi Abe’s art has a lot of detail. It takes you to worlds beyond ours!

When I was in Japan, a Yoshitoshi Abe artbook was one of the things I had to get (aside from a Moyashimon plushie). I was at Random Walk in Kyoto, one time, and I saw his Gaisokyu illustration book for sale. I bought it right away. (Random Walk, by the way, is a bookstore that specialized in import books but the first floor has books on Japanese culture. )

Here are a few scans from Gaisokyu:

  3. It’s been awhile since I’ve commented.

Yoshitoshiabe does have a very intriguing style. I wouldn’t say I LOVE his art. But I do think it’s interesting how his art provokes feelings of Tsutomu Nihei (who is one of my favorite artists), both artists draw bleak and beautiful scenes.

the 2nd image is my favorite. But I don’t know why it reminds me of Claymore.

Artbooks are so fun. I own one myself the “Tsukihime Plus Period” book.
