Toshokan Sensou 12 – A Baffling BAWWFul Episode

So the last episode has aired and thanks to veoh I managed to watch it in the office! w00t! But then it’s low resolution so it kinda sucks. Must rewatch later!

Curse this episode for making my eyes all red and swollen. I was crying throughout the episode’s run  It’s that BAWWful. First off, after what happened last time (which was no longer shown to us, not that I really care — I’ll get around reading that part in the novel, someday), Genda ended up in a coma, and Doujou turned into a lifeless doll due to trauma and whatever it was that occurred with the crazy woman last time.

I know for a fact that Doujou is not gonna die, as I’ve already told issa and biankita. But man, seeing Doujou like this was almost unbearable to watch. I can feel Iku’s pain throughout this episode  And unlike most sissy heroines, she channeled this sadness towards something positive: she worked harder than ever, practiced all by herself (as though reminiscing the good times with Doujou :’( ) so that when Doujou wakes up he’ll be real proud of her.

To top it off, after the great holocaust in episode 11, the media people were pinning the blame on the Library, believing that such a tragic event would not have occurred had they remained obedient and non-resistant to the censorship movement. They’re on the MBA side, meh. Chief Inamine was forced to resign because of this, which makes our Library dudes sad puppies, but understands his decision well.

Iku visited Doujou in the hospital twice a day everyday after the great Library x MBA conflict, hoping for the day he’ll regain his consciousness, so she can be with the Prince she so loves. Komaki entrusts her with a few of Doujou’s favorite books which she read for him during each visit. The protagonist in one of these stories reminded Iku so much of Doujou, and that made her miss him more.

On one of these visits, she gets caught by some paparazzi Media people who’ve been dying to get the Library’s statement regarding the recent incident. They bombarded her with questions, similar to a previous scene omitted from the anime (which I still have to elaborate on more), but this time around there’s a lot more reason for Iku to be agitated about these nosy and insensitive reporters: they stepped on Doujou’s precious book!! Just when Iku was gonna go all RAEGGG mode, she remembers the great advice from her prince, to not let emotions get the better of her. With this, she was able to calm down, and gave out an exemplary speech in defense of the Library and the principles they fight for. To roughly sum up what Iku said: Just because a rule has been passed about censorship doesn’t mean it’s right; the ones who should be ashamed of themselves are those who simply accept this [unlawful] rule without even questioning whether it’s right or wrong. Then goes her speech about the chamomile and what it symbolizes – strength in the midst of distress, which simply means that amidst the crisis the Library is facing, they won’t give up and continue on with this fight!!

Iku’s speech was so overwhelming that she gained fans from all over the world (or Japan, whatever), sending her letters of encouragement, as well as chamomile flowers. In this time of happiness, she runs to Doujou, who is, was, and has always been, her prince. She knew this well even before, but was just too stubborn to admit it. Now that she realized her feelings, she confesses her love, not to the prince who saved her before, but to Doujou who’s right in front of her eyes. Iku adds, “I was acting all high and mighty when I gave out my speech in front of TV, but I can’t [live without you, Doujou], so please… [come back]“, confessing her utter weakness and helplessness without Doujou by her side (I’m still crying as I type this…)

At that moment, Doujou reaches out his hand and pats her on the head, like he always does… bewildered as to why she’s crying. Now that Iku’s most beloved has come back, Iku wipes away her tears and hugs her dear prince. We see the epilogue as the ending song plays in the background, with Iku narrating her letter to her parents, about Doujo and Genda’s recovery, the continued support they gain from people around the globe, Tezuka’s brother ceasing meddling with them, and all that. As the episode draws to a close, we see Iku in her usual training like the first episode, but this time around, she doesn’t just stumble and fall… she falls in Doujou’s arms ;)

Ending thoughts

This episode was made of Pure (B)AWWsomeness. And as if it wasn’t obvious, I loved how this series ended. LOVED IT. Yes it was pretty much a baffling episode since we didn’t get to see what the heck happened in the fire accident last time, not to mention Genda was also silly for his heroic act of defending the MIGHTY SUIT without helmets or such protection in episode 11. Then there’s also the useless “villain” in the person of Tezuka’s brother, whom we thought will provide more excitement for the series. He turned out like Lex Luthor in the Superman Returns movie, an anticlimactic lame villain. I could probably say more about the ridiculous stuff about the entire series, imitate the cynics who persevered through the series despite being so consistent with their bashing as well. But for those who love Toshokan Sensou for what it is, there’s only one thing to say: Who gives a damn about these cynics, right?!

Despite all the flaws you can mention about the plot and premise and whatever aspects of the show, you can’t deny that the characters were fleshed out well. I loved the development of the characters, especially crybaby Iku and tsundere Doujou. I loved almost all the characters in this series, the main ones who I briefly introduced in my first TS pimping, that is, all of them became endearing characters whose antics I will never get tired of.

I demand a second season! If only to show more Tezuka x Asako, and Genda x reporter-san X3

The anime has ended, but the manga has not. So Toshokan Sensou fans still have something to look forward to XD

To all those whose interest I piqued when I first pimped it and got fooled into watching this ridiculous show enjoyed this series to the end, thank you for sitting through this great series amidst the illogical stuff. Not like fangurls and fanboys care about such trivial details, right?

  1. Gah! I hope the subs come out soon! Is the novel or the manga better? Or are they the same thing :X

  2. i love your first screenshot. damn! dojo is H-O-T-T there…

ok, i have to admit… i’m a little disappointed that they didn’t really tell how they got him out of the fire because i really wanted to know considering the excess they showed the on last scene of the epi 11. but that’s just a detail. :? so heartbreaking to see him in that lethargic state… my spoiler was a bitch… i didn’t know he went into lethargy so i was crying buckets when i realized it.

this has to be the first episode of TS where i wasn’t confused by what was being said so i love love love how it ended – so the tripping into each other arms was a little cheesy but don’t care. :D thank you for pimping me show. i watched the first episode on my own and found your TS deep fryer and got so hooked into this. :D you and issa-sa have been friend TS shipper friends.

  3. You actually did watch it ASAP :XO: . My heroine (both meanings apply :p) , i’m waiting for the subs for this, but now I have a synopsis, thanks to you *bows* .
And they pulled the amnesyac bishie trick . Oh dear. That squeezed my lil’ fangurlish heart with memories old and new (ditto on the hospital scene + flowers ). Btw, Doujo is way too hot to be legal in his memory-less state :halo:
And Iku… I’m so proud of her way of dealing with the media TT.TT *tears of joy* . Awww…
Just like you, I’d like to see more of TezukaxShibasaki. Well, we’re counting on you for some nove-related juicy bits ;) (hopefully there will be , right :D ). About the unrealistic premises… eh, come on, Full Metal Panic was even more unrealistic than this, still it worked pretty well (rawr, anime/novel powah XD ).
Since you pimpied this series on your blog, I’ve been spreding the lurve for TS among my ebfriends XD. And succesfully -and … deservedfully (lookie, methinks I made a new word )- so.
I’m so, so glad about this ending 3.

    Cheers! *chamomile tea party XD*

Looking at the first screenshot: but… are those snapshots about the famous chamomile date :3 ? * ‘awwws’ some more*
The only bit missing now would be… babies! XD <3

  5. Woah, wait, I missed episode 11, what happened? O.o;

Dammit, this anime needs a second season. Any word on how it did in the ratings?

  6. Dude, in the screenshot where it’s Doujo in the past, it’s freaking scary. He looks just like IKU. 8O

  8. Thanks for the summary! In exchange, there’s a higher quality version of your first screenshot in my website link.

That’s the screencap I posted on the Animesuki thread. :P
But since I don’t own neither Kasahara  nor Doujou :vangry: you can use.

The series may have ended now (and I’m really satisfied with this ending) but we still have Spitfire and Love & War. I’m looking forward to reading the missing novel#4 part in the manga series.

  11. @Grey: TS has novels (complete with 4 volumes) and 2 manga adaptations (shoujou and shounen) hehe. The novel is already great, so I can’t really make a comparison between that and the manga and pinpoint which is more superior. As a medium, the manga is better because we get to see pretty pictures!! instead of just text lol. I’m looking forward to more of the manga, and at the same time aiming to finish reading the novels ^^

@bianks: It’s been a great experience shipping this show with fellow fangurls, who sticked with it through thick and thin *hugs* According to an active MAL member, Doujou was supposedly not injured in the novel… hm, will check more on that.

@elianthos: oh yeah, the Sailormoon parody you mentioned!! XD To think that this scene seemed to be an anime-original, that parody must have been done on purpose lol.

I’m real proud of Iku in this episode too, real proud :halo:
we need more details on the chamomile tea date!! I’m sure the novel elaborated on that :XO:
@L-chan: there was some serious Library x MBA conflict in episode 11, the MBA went all RAEG MODE because the Library had this MBA-insulting MIGHTY SUIT artwork on display. All hell breaks lose and Genda ends up being shot (he sort of brought it upon himself orz). Then this crazy woman who became so paranoid about the punishment that will be brought upon her due to dis-arming(?) the Library she was in-charge of attempts arsony, and Doujou gets caught in it

I know that TS did good in the ratings, I’m just not sure what the rating was specifically.

    @Christina: now that you mention it… 8O
This really need a second season!!! Would love a love-comedy focused one, or something like FMP Fumoffu <3

@Anonymous: why retain anonymity lol. anyways, I still have to go replace these fugly pics with the high res ones, I have the raws here XD
@Kaze: me too!!! I really wish the manga started wayyy before the anime lol.

    @blissmo: hahahahaha :idea:

@maya: I will post about the novel from time to time, once I get around finishing reading (/me is a slowpoke reader of the TS novel, it hurts my poor brain  )

    Posted by usagijen | June 29, 2008, 12:15 am
  12. @usagijen: What anonimity? It clearly says “Anonymouse” in there. :D

@Kaze: the picture I posted was taken from Futaba’s thread for ToshoSen 12 and reuploaded to my Imageshack account through the transuploader. I think the thread’s already dead but it had about two different versions of that picture. But yeah, neither of us own Dojo or Kasahara… we’re only allowed to fangirl about them. :XO:

  13. Wow. .. It is the end. .. I didn’t care so much for the story as much as for the characters. I also really think they flesh the characters out so well. It feels like I know them.

Thank you for blogging this. it is one of the few blogs that I read religiously.

  14. @Anonymouse: I can’t believe I missed the e lol XD

@Paj: Aww I’m flattered by your comment  TS FTW!

  15. God I’m late to the Toshokan Sensou has ended BAWWW, but it was AWESOME YAY party T_T
It looks like the series never got to cover the forth book (Okay, so I finally gave in and took a peek at the end of the 3rd XD). Oh god, if this doesn’t call for a second season, I don’t know what does!

    Posted by issa-sa | June 30, 2008, 7:47 pm
  16. @issa: from what I’ve seen in the homepage even before the anime started, they intended to cover only the first three volumes. But gawd this demands a second season indeed!!! RAWR!

  17. Coming soon, Toshokan Sensou: Read Alone Complex, perhaps? :D

Or some other cleverer title which I can’t think of at the moment. I want another season, with the same characters but featuring totally re-interpreted events adapted from the novels or the manga. Hey, if I.G could do it with Ghost In The Shell and Seirei no Moribito, I don’t see why they can’t do something similar for Toshokan Sensou. :P

In the end, while Toshokan Sensou may not have been the brainiest show this spring, it certainly has been the most “feel-good” of them all. I loved it through-and-through.

*edit, oh wait, got one possible title:

    The Bear Killers: Second Generation

    Posted by TinyRedLeaf | July 2, 2008, 12:47 pm
  18. ^ Silly me, I should go with simpler but effective titles, like:

    Toshokan Sensou: 2nd Edition

Heheh, if I.G really does use that for a second season, remember you read it here first! :D

    Posted by TinyRedLeaf | July 2, 2008, 2:48 pm
  19. @TinyRedLeaf: woohoo! I think many many fans are now demanding a second season for this, it’ll be Production I.G.’s loss if they don’t give in to what the fans want ;)

Loved the title The Bear Killers: Second Generation
, that will make it so TS-unique! :P

P.S. did your love for TS drove you to such ideas or you’re just bored? :P

    Posted by usagijen | July 2, 2008, 6:01 pm
  20. I was just bored. After all, none of the summer anime look particularly appealing to me. Well, maybe Natsume Yuujinchou, but it hasn’t started yet.

But I wouldn’t mind a more “serious” Library War sequel in the future, to cover the material they’ve left out in Toshokan Sensou.

  21. “I demand a second season!”
    …if only…

  22. If only, indeed :(

  23. Well I blazed through this series in a few days and I must say, why didn’t the fansubbers start earlier on this dangit?!? I couldn’t find this series earlier in the spring and had totally forgotten about it until I say your posts about it again. Grr, this one had better get licensed in the US soon, and I hope they also publish the novels, they seem to doing more and more of this lately which is excellent. Ah, and a question about the novels/manga, you said that they do go beyond this point? I hope so anyway, then there is material for a sequel!

    Posted by wandering-dreamer | August 20, 2008, 7:35 am
  24. @wandering-dreamer: Mendoi-Conclave must’ve went through quite a lot of QC-ing or perfecting, hence the slowness of the subs. There’s currently a livejournal community (http://community.livejournal.com/toshosen_tsl) dedicated to translating the novels, which is great. That means more exposure to non-Japanese readers, and make the possibility of having the novels licensed, higher as well ^^

I’m not keeping my hopes up too much that this will have a sequel… that way, I can be more surprised and glad when it finally comes true :)
