You have to take the anime for what it is, an adaptation. Things are bound to be different. But occasionally awkward art and animation aside, I think they've been following the manga pretty closely (when they follow the manga anyway...the fillers have gotten worse as time goes on I think). But I'm surprised to learn that you dropped the anime way back before the Nikaidou arc. Though now that I think about it, lots of people did. I can still remember the outrage that followed episode 13 like it was yesterday... I think you summed it up perfectly. You have to take the anime for what it is, an adaptation. Can't remember which fillers are between Nikaidou and the present (I'm a fansub watcher, so that'd be 33 for me), but there were some good ones, I think; I've learned to like a lot of the side characters.
