Thanks to a renewed slice-of-life mindset, I have come to enjoy Mahou Tsukai ni Taisetsu ~Natsu no Sora~ and other slice-of-life shows much more than before

Don’t ever force a child choose between his/her dad and mom, it’s really painful and even traumatic at times.
Episode 4 reveals to us Gouta’s past, how his almost-perfect life was shook the moment his father revealed that he’s a mage. I think it was pretty clear way back episode 2 that Gouta is all confused with how he should live. He was having the time of his life, getting good grades in school, spending time with his buddies, and all that. But with the blink of an eye, poof, he bids goodbye to his colorful high school life because of his responsibilities as a mage. The worst thing about this is that his very blood sealed off this fate for him, and that’s certainly not something he can get away from. No wonder he became all grumpy.
Despite all that grumpiness and desperateness we’ve seen of him in the past episodes, we finally see him starting to gain appreciation for his newfound life. And perhaps love?
The scene with him solving the second task with the help of his mage buddy obaachan (or however they call them XD) was just wonderful. Gouta misses home, he misses his mom, the bentou she cooks for him, just about everything about that motherly love

Doujou kyoukan!! Gouta really went Doujou-tsuntsun mode here =P
But thankfully, there’s Sora who, by fate, will most likely be his great companion throughout this journey. Is it just me or do I smell sparks of romance in this episode? Seeing them together in the sushi bar was really cute, more so when Gouta teases Sora for her humongous appetite despite her petitness
Gouta became all nostalgic in this episode, and so did I. Many of the scenes shown here reminded me (yet again) of Japanesque lifestyle last summer.
…from the yummy super spicy Habanero ring chips I loved so much (the one in this pic is actually a Habanero curry bun, which I would’ve loved to try out +__+)…
…to the random mini-concerts I see on the streets late at night while walking down the streets of Fukuoka…
…and the nostalgic “you can walk on the pedestrian now” tune I hear every now and then, back then…
Looking at this image of leaves shown while Gouta was “escaping from his fate”, made me realize how amazing they are. These little elements of nature bear witness to the happenings in our lives, calmly watching over us, and perhaps laughing at us with our silliness at times. Despite how unstable and weak we are, they remain strong as ever, standing tall and proud, always ready to receive the gracious abundance of blessings that each new day brings. Just looking at them is enough to make you at peace. And I guess this scenery aimed to show the striking contrast between the ever-present peace in nature, and the lack of it in Gouta’s heart back then. In the end, it’s not really about being able to use magic, but having a heart. That’s where all the magic starts. Gouta must be realizing that now too. Nanchatte~
So yeah, I guess I’ll be blogging this show and witness this whole self-discovery journey of Sora and Gouta (and myself, as well
).
P.S. I actually want to read the post of both Totali and Impz on this, linkwhore by agreeing / disagreeing with their thoughts and impressions. But it’s getting late, I’m getting lazy, and I somewhat lost my energies after this flying cockroach randomly came out of nowhere and scared me out of my wits. In the meantime, I’ll just randomly linkwhore to them lol.

Slice-of-life series are <3. (*cough*HachiKuro*cough*)
Haven’t seen ep 4 yet, but am looking forward to it since it’s Gouta’s backstory. I’m all for Sora x Gouta. I already like Gouta’s character, but I like him even more because of the voice.
@hazy: yes, agreed~ glad to see that you’re a Gouta x Sora shipper too, w00t!
w00t Gouta X Sora (The Inoue Marina voiced chick is so un-Iku anyways :P)
Right now I’m totally digging how the mood of the story’s reflective of the characters, everything feels right in place here
@issa-sa: I never really bothered about that other girl, pfft
Natsu no Sora is really nostalgic, and that’s what I love most about it. Down to earth with characters that you’ll empathize with more as the series goes. 100% guilt-free slice-of-life enjoyment~
I dislike Gouta’s mom; she should have at least given her husband of 17 YEARS a chance, especially as anyone could plainly see he regretted his decision. She didn’t even look that sad as she left, just cold and unfeeling. And Gouta’s the one who suffers most of all
@Omisyth: Rawr yes. On top of that, she even made Gouta choose between her and his dad! Ugh! Poor Gouta…
I feel sorry for his dad too, who carried the burden of guilt all those years and was left by his beloved wife after revealing that ultimate secret.
I like the idea of GoutaxSora too! He’s a fairly stable character despite his background. I like him – I am looking forward to his development more than Sora’s. I find him more interesting and complex.
The first three episodes were good, though the pace was a bit slow for my liking. I am looking forward to the next episodes subs, as reading the blog summaries isnt the same. Not to mention, it looks like some very interesting things are coming on. Is it just me or does Sora’s new friend sound like she’s got a crush on Gouta too?
@VSky: I actually thought Gouta’s gonna be more… rebellious and unstable, so I was a bit surprised to see him softening up sooner than I thought. I also find Gouta far more interesting than Sora, and I’m a bit sad that Gouta didn’t have much screentime in the past 2 episodes. Then again, I’m happy that he and Sora are getting along great.
I kinda noticed Sora’s friend’s little crush too, but the past two episodes have yet to confirm those suspicions
Aha! So it wasnt me being silly or imagining what wasnt there!
Lets hope it doesnt develop into some silly angsty love triangle subplot down the line – I dont know how the manga ends or progresses, but I did come across something along those lines happening on the web in the manga.
Yeah, Gouta did soften a bit too easily didnt he? Then again, episode 4 subs did show him to have come from a close knit, supportive family which makes me think he must have been a mature, stable guy himself. that changed after his dad’s lineage was bought to light. I did think the woman was harsh, but she was lied to. I do hope his parents get a happier ending, it didnt seem as though they hate each other and the mom seemed to have a lot of trouble digesting the fact that her husband had kept such a huge secret to himself.
In any case, I do hope to see more of Gouta. He’s interesting and looks like he is trying to accept himself as a mage now. Good luck to you Gouta
@VSky: now you got me curious about the manga, I might just check that out any time soon-ish
Gouta was brought up well by his family, and perhaps this seemingly perfect family was the reason behind the drastic reaction of his mom after finding out his father’s secret. Like, the perfect image she had of her family was shattered because of that one lie, and it was really hard for her to accept that. I just hope they resolve this, and let us see Gouta happy, both with his life as a mage, and with his family.
