Ever since I set my eyes on the nifty post slideshow in the homepage of Oi Hayaku, I immediately thought of it as a MUST HAVE for our blog. *in before accusations of being a thief
* Rather than having it display the latest posts, I thought it would be most useful to showcase the ones that we personally deem to be worth-sharing, especially those that have been buried deep in the archives ‘graveyard’ that most readers wouldn’t really bother digging deeeep into, unless he/she is a hardcore fan of the blog. Or is just a totally bored. Imagine a ‘Blogging Hall of Fame’ of some sort, composed of stuff carefully(?) selected from among the pile of posts in the blog. And with this, we bring you the ‘random featured posts’ slideshow in the homepage. Step out of your RSS Feed Reader for a second and please take a look! Oh and be amazed with the Tag [Cumulus] Cloud too
Plowing through posts in a blog like ours is especially difficult since ‘gem/timeless posts’ don’t come by often, being a blog that doesn’t really have as much EPIC WIN levels as other blogs out there. And regardless of that, I’m sure every blog out there have certain posts that they’re most proud of, and would want other people (especially to those who just discovered their blog) to read them if they can. While I can’t really say the posts I chose are the ‘Best of Scrumptious’ or ’sure to be worthy reads’ (since I added some Alternative Universe [photo] posts there lol), I’d say most of them are stuff I feel like sharing for people to read, for a variety of purposes, serious and/or for teh lulz.
I think I ought to make a post explaining the ones I chose to feature, the way N did with his epic ‘Best of Drastic Anime Blog 2008′ post, but heh… I’m too lazy right now. I’d love to see more bloggers showcase their posts, I’d happily read them ^^ So… share your epic posts for people to read! Don’t be afraid to pimp yourself, or better yet, pimp for other people. It’d be like sharing stuff on Google Reader with Notes, for the entire ’sphere to see
Oh, and please do give feedback regarding the random featured posts thingy we have! It’ll be much appreciated. I might just throw in some random reviews we have there, especially the ‘one shot/overall series reviews’. Whaddya think?
I’m planning to switch themes soon too, since our current theme is getting cluttered and unmanageable T__T I’m gonna migrate the slideshow to whatever theme we’re gonna be using, and hopefully we’ll get to have MOAR banners then too. So much for unresolved resolutions, heh x__x;

Hmm. My only criticism of the rather neat Featured Posts thingy would be that it jumps in size every now and then, because (I think) the image for #1 is smaller than the images in the other posts.
One fun thing to do with selected posts is to link to them from one’s MAL profile. I suspect (though of course I’ve no evidence) that there’s a big reservoir of potential readers who would enjoy the otakusphere, but haven’t discovered it, on MAL, so it’s a good place for restrained pimping.
Oooh, looking forward to your new theme and layout =D. I’ve been experimenting with various layouts on my manga blog and look forward to stealing some ideas from you ^^.
I want this. I should get my own domain, and figure out hosting… then I can mess with themes and designs.
I think I first saw this sort of thing on that qq.com site, but it’s pretty applicable to feed visitors what we believe we are about posts, ones that don’t have time constraints… could even be series posts or a certain category… many options.
I’ve a few technical posts coming up, but one of the things I’ve been aiming for is more melative integration (haven’t progressed since sept/oct). Specifically, because the API is “healthy” and only requires javascript I’d like to use a more compact episodic reflection + snaps interface, much like slides, but a thought on this slide issue is that only the front page sees it. More than likely, visitors may hit a content page before the front page, so it may be an idea to place this feature slide thing you’re planning in a side bar, as well as the front page.
Design is a pain in the ass time-consumer lol… I wish you luck ^^
ps. for some reason, my comment on your winter preview was blocked
Yeah I am also moving to get my own Featured Posts section up, a temporary one is in place but I want a more consistent and more informative one, with thumbnails and stuff. Unfortunately I have no CSS/PHP knowledge and need to get help from others for that. :\
No offense or anything but I find your front page pretty confusing…not that I’ve taken the time to learn it or anything…-_-’
@IKnight: ohh yes! I’ve been meaning to do that ever since I saw you post links in MAL, and gah, I keep forgetting to do so. I should get myself to do that over the weekend. Thanks for pointing out the uneven image problem, I think there’s only one rebellious post with the different image size, and I should’ve fixed it (I hope).
@Kabitzin: IF I have any ideas worth stealing that is, and I’ll be honored if that happens
@ghostlightning: how about free hosting from dasaku or animeblogger.net? Though of course having your own domain and hosting provides a different kind of FREEDOM.
@Ryan: timeless posts are always worth sharing
Thanks for the suggestion, I’m really planning to integrate the featured posts in and out of the front page, so I’m looking for a theme that can allow me to do just that (or at least have enough space for me to place it in the sidebar)
and sorry for the blocked comment D: gah, will have to check what’s wrong x__x;
@Panther: all the best with that!
@lelangir: I’m pretty sure most people think so too, including myself. It all turned out into this jumbled mess with all the stuff I [mis]placed, so I’d really want to start from ’scratch’, find another theme, and fix things up.
I make it an effort to always link to my older posts whenever it’s related to the latest. Aside from lazibuziness (which is primary reason lol), the reason I have few posts is that I try to contain an idea into a single topic and then later “ping” that idea again by linking whenever it’s relevant to the latest idea. You can always see me pimping my bishoujo game-related posts because I have an entire wiki-web of bishoujo game posts connected to each other. Linking to me is as easy as [Sometext->postname] through a Wordpress plugin. I hope though I can start on a shoujo-side web of ideas though, it’s a whole other side of me that only few people know about.
Random awesome posts is a nice touch, though yup I still rely on RSS for reading so I won’t always catch on. If aggregators like Nano and Antenna can collect our latest posts, I wonder what kind of system can collect old but good posts? Maybe those Google Reader, MAL ideas are a nice start.
I was wondering if you knew where the image you used came from, I once StumbleUpon-ed it but there was no identifying information…
Thanks!
