because pictures paint a thousand words, with subtitles, even more so….
One thing people will find most noteworthy about Skip Beat is the goddess heroine Kyoko and her versatility as a character. Without doubt, Kyoko has got to be the most expressive character you’ll ever see in the manga/anime world, if the above screencaps don’t serve enough proof of that (click at your own risk!). Opinions regarding Skip Beat’s (and Kyoko’s) awesomeness or depth might differ from person to person (I know for a fact that my ability to relate with Skip Beat is far beyond normal), but this is one thing we can all agree with.
From timid and shy, to smug-faced confident; from downright silly to seriously dramatic; from a raving fangirl to a raging evil tempest (your worst nightmare); from a pure-hearted and innocent angel, to a sinister devil… her expressions know no bounds (you can just imagine how challenging it was for Marina Inoue to play her role, challenging yet fun!) — the epitome of the “multifaceted character”, that’s what she is. You ain’t seen no multifaceted character till you meet the great Kyoko. She might just lack the so-called emo / drama that plagues other characters, but that’s what makes her great. Given a choice between sulking about her sucky past and staying optimistic, she chose the latter, to become a happy fun-loving Tigger as opposed to the ever-so-gloomy Eeyore (a lesson from the late Randy Pausch).
Her expressiveness goes to show that, more than being on the verge of insanity or suffering from a bipolar / multiple-personality disorder, she’s a very well-rounded character. She has flaws all right, but they’re due to her naiveté, and not the kind of stupidity that you’ll hate (unless you have a thing against naive / dense characters), far unlike the typical bullcrap you’ll see in typical shoujo mangas and animes. She is said to be an anti-heroine, because unlike other sissy female leads, she knows how to FIGHT BACK! Dare cross THE Kyoko, and you won’t get to see the light of day. In other words, she’s a total B.I.T.C.H. (Babe in control of herself). She can be the greatest friend you’ll ever have, and also your worst enemy1. Both her good and bad sides all the more make her awesome as a character, and despite her idiosyncrasies and over-the-top antics, you can feel just how real a character she is. I can only hope you’d feel it too, that Kyoko (and the rest of the characters in the Skip Beat world) is REAL, and that Skip Beat is far more than just entertainment. I shall be the living testament of that, as one of the biggest Skip Beat fagns alive, and I can only hope that in the coming days ahead, I’ll be able to show the ‘concrete proof’ of what I’m talking about.

if she’s real then she’s not a goddess, if she’s a goddess she ain’t real! you gotta pick one
I just finished watching ep 23 with the waifu. LOOOOOOOOOL
Normally I wouldn’t be too excited about a show that features SOOOOOOOOOOOO MUCH internal monologue, but the internal monologues in Skip Beat is actually the source of a lot of the comedy.
Not only does the seiyuu give a riotous over-the-top performance (showing off both low register guttural utterances but also the expected tittering squeals of a cute anime girl), but the show pulls out the stops and gives all sorts of wacky images.
Instead of similes and metaphors, such as the poor director feeling like a frog in the presence of the chairman’s snake, they show the snake and the frog — only with the chairman’s and the director’s faces.
That’s just one example of many nutty gags. Kyoko herself has devils, angels, angel chickens…
…so yeah, the internal monologues work. Skip Beat is awesome.
@animekritik: don’t you use my words against me now!
Also, a goddess’ feelings is as real as can be, right? So she can be real that way!
@ghostlightning: it’s the source of both the fun stuff and the pathos. Also, without the internal monologues, Ren would be totally incomprehensible!
But yeah, no doubt, Skip Beat is awesome!!
Oh goodness. So many images. My brain got overloaded by so much Kyoko after just a few moments.
Kyoko has to be one of the most likable characters I’ve ever encountered in anime. I only found one person who didn’t like her because she was “evil” since she wanted revenge against Sho (I think they just had a stick up their butt since they fell in love with Sho after one chapter and was somehow insulted by Kyoko not still loving him after being dumped. In which case I don’t want such a shallow person loving my Kyoko anyway!)
Even outside of Kyoko’s own personality, she creates new personalities for other characters. It has to be because of her own expressiveness that she’s able to become such a great actress so soon.
Oh goodness, I don’t want to get carried away, so I’ll just say: Kyoko is awesome! And leave it at that for now (I’m going to go through withdrawals switching back to only seeing her once a month instead of every week).
Let me just say I love you for capturing all the best screen shots of Kyoko ever. Thank you very much!
Thanks to Skip Beat, Kyoko has become of my favorite heroines of all time. It is because of Kyoko that Skip Beat didn’t feel like a “typical shoujo” to me. It was borderline shounen half the time! In my experience, some characters make a show a classic (Lelouch to CG, Sakura to CCS, etc) and in this case, Kyoko is very much so. Go Kyoko! I approve of this awesome post. ^______^
If she is a goddess, then Tsuruga Ren is her consort. And I am their eternal worshiper.
so many images!!! my slow computer is still not finished loading all of them. it would have been more awesome if they gave the anime a little bit more closure. but we still have the manga ^^
You missed this image of kyoko which I think is the awesomest hands down! hahah AWESOME! I also love her evil apparitions and they make me laugh all the time. I think one of her best evil look was when she donned the bo costume and was plotting against sho.
I agree with Minnie in that watching skip beat feels more like watching a shounen anime rather than a shoujo anime. Its the same feeling I get when I watch slam dunk and similar animes.
One thing I don’t like about skip beat though is the total lack of love for moko. She just doesn’t get enough screen time. I loooovvve moko and hates it when she just gets to sit on the sidelines all the time. T_T kyoko x moko forevah!!!
@ Fuyu: Seriously? I’ve never ran into anyone like that. Good because god knows what I would do to them.
I love Kyoko. She has so many emotions, that can change at any given time like a real person. She never gives up, even in circumstances that would prompt most people to lose hope, and even when she makes judgements on people, she’s always willing to admit she was wrong and forgive.
Also, how could you dislike anyone that crazy? (In a totally normal way though).
@FuyuMaiden: Her expressiveness + ability to emphatize with other people makes her WIN in showbiz!
And if you’re currently suffering from anime-Kyoko withdrawal, you can always opt for a rewatch!
and LOL @ the Kyoko hater, she’s better off ignored. We can all laugh at her foolishness, ohohohoho~ *imitates Kyoko’s devilish laughter*
@Minnie and BeLe: I remember bateszi mention about the shounen-hybrid characteristic of Skip Beat, and I couldn’t agree more. We have Kyoko facing the challenges of Showbiz, on the way to find her true self, facing hurdles here and there, powering up to become much better than she was yesterday! Yeah!
and Bele, go get your Moko fix from the manga! nyahaha
@biankita: the lack of closure will be acceptable if the series is going to have a second season!
@Sojourner: you are not alone! _WE_ are their eternal worshippers
You know, I believe Inoue Marina should win a seiyuu award for her role as Kyouko in Skip Beat!
NOW WHO’S WITH ME?
@boku youna: I’m sure most of us here will agree to that. Inoue Marina BANZAI!!
it feels like watching a shounen anime rather than a shoujo anime 2bh, still love it though
i’ve only started watching this series but i’m surprised by how much i’m beginning to like it. i like kyoko’s multi-dimensional growth. she does have her issues but it’s not hard to relate to some of her dilemmas. occasionally hilarious and nice characterization
After devoting herself to Sho, all the stuff she went through when she was a kid, and eventually having her eyes opened to the truth, I love seeing Kyoko’s journey as she tries to find her own identity, and watching her grow in every episode. Her theatrics are pure win and so much fun to watch!
On another note, Ren is also great to watch/read… learning about his past little by little and watching his feelings for Kyoko grow. I even began to *somewhat* appreciate Sho after the angel+devil arc. I’m really hoping for season 2 (or more) plus Show ▼
Thank goodness for the manga. Now I just have to control myself and read it slowly so I won’t be left hanging while waiting for the latest chapters. xDD
ROFL HER MANY FACES ARE SO FUNNY!
That title you have there reminds me of Glass Mask, where the main character is a genius actress that has 1000 masks for each role she plays.
Since both anime/manga are about acting it kinda fits. But true, Kyoko is one of the best heroines (*cough* doormat from Hot Gimmick *cough*).
