ZOMG Darker than Black Was Brought Back From the Dead

…or Out of the Dark, whatever works.

yin-boo
…booo~!

It’s only been a few months (barely 2 months) since the epic Darker than Black Rewatch Movement, and now THIS. Talk about some amazing coincidence. Could it be as issa-sa has said, that the Reappraisal Movement brought Darker than Black from the dead?! Well that’s what we’d like to believe, in the same way as other bloggers would like to think that they were the FORCE behind this change, but considering that rumors of this sequel have been circulating ever since that Bones Leakage… bummmer. Would’ve been a totally EFFIN’ coincidence if the rewatch happened without the rumors. But anyways.

Fans of the series seem to be divided over this news, some prefer the series left as it is, while some are more than happy to see MOAR, me included (either to see the characters reunited, resurrected, or to have the “missing details” filled-in). Here’s what some bloggers (via the Google Reader Shared Items Sekkret Society — JOIN NOW! lol) have to say:

omo:I hope they bring back 11/11. It’s 1/3 of the reason why I liked the first set.

YES. MOAR 11/11 is GOOD.

Omisyth: I can’t even remember what happened in the first series tbh.

LOL. I’m sure other people can relate to this… a rewatch is all you need to Remember Love!

Coburn: [...] I for one would have preferred it if they’d left things as they were with DtB. Will still be watching.

Panther had the same sentiment too. Worst comes to worst, we can all just pretend the sequel never happened! but I doubt that would happen.

Owen: @Coburn Eh, it’s still Tensai Okamura at the helm. As long as he gets Shinsuke Onishi to write more than just a couple of main character arcs I guess we’re all good to go!

I feel like pulling off the “That’s cheating. Everyone who knows names [...] will know it is worth watching” card here, but I won’t.

Hige: The world is developed enough to sustain a completely new cast and BONES have got the talent to make any character interesting. I’d be cool if Hei/Yin were perhiphery, perhaps coming back into the spotlight at a Super Dramatic Moment. Misaki will probably be more conspicuous – her role makes her much easier to write into situations. Personally I’m just glad the /world/ is coming back. So many interesting thematic ideas left to be explored.

Awesomesauce speculations. And yes, I concur.

I’ll be happy just to see more of Yin (I never quite understood what happened to Yin by the end of the series), Hei, Misaki and November 11 (if that’d be possible), really. I can only hope people won’t start setting “expectations” for this new season, because getting ahead of what you’re watching (and being really close-minded about it) can be one of the Ultimate Recipes for Doom and Disappointment.

Also, as much as I feel lucky that I only became a Darker than Black fan not until recently, and that I didn’t have to go through the “agony” of waiting for this sequel to arrive, I feel as if I’m missing out on the “nostalgia factor” this new season brings. Unlike my sempais who followed the show back when it aired in Spring 2007, I don’t have that same “ZOMG Reunion after Years!!!” natsukashii~ DOKI DOKI WAKU WAKU feeling. It’ll take a bit of time before a series totally sinks in to you and reach Nostalgia Level. I, for one, have not yet immersed myself so much into the Darker than Black world. Writing blog posts is not enough! In fact, I think immersing yourself in the music would be the better “channel” for the said nostalgia. Then there’s also the nostalgia factor from following a series on a weekly basis, sharing the experience with fellow fans, or rewatching a series for a number of times. But yeah, I owe it to myself to immerse (or re-immerse) myself into DtB. More DtB exposure would be good.

Till the DtB Resurrection finally comes…! :D

  1. Hurrah! Truly, the planets have aligned.

Your idea of music immersion is not bad! Incidentally, I think Owen was lamenting his lack of a full DtB soundtrack last week on twitter.

  2. I’m actually kinda apprehensive about this. Yeah, when I first finished DtB, I was all GO SEQUEL GOOOOOOO!!! Then I almost immediately went to thinking that a sequel might be hard to do — I mean, sure, a lot is left unexplained, but do you REALLY want the answers? What if the answers suck?? What if my love for what I don’t know is destroyed?? What if it sucks!?!?!?

My poor heart can’t take another bad sequel. :(

  3. Yes! Sequel! But indeed, I hope that it will be a good sequel; I’ve seen too many bad ones lately (Geass R2/G00 to name two). Then again, BONES isn’t Sunrise. What timeslot will it be broadcast in I wonder? Will sponsors takeover in terms of plot/story direction? More Pizza Hut?

  4. Honestly I don’t understand my own lack of interest in this. I fell off near the end, and the finale didn’t enthrall me. Oh I do think that this is all on me, and not really the anime’s fault.

But really I don’t know what I need to change or if I’m that interested in changing just to watch this. I guess I’ll know when the time comes.

  5. I am always lamenting the lack of a full DtB soundtrack. The day I have enough money and power I am torturing Yoko Kanno for its whereabouts.

Oh, and I am going to be laughing at the fandumb so hard should they not get the “answers” they want in the second season and become frustrated, because a lot of DtB fans are idiots. TENSAI OKAMURA HIMSELF SAID IT WAS A HUMAN DRAMA, PEOPLE, GET OVER IT. It was never about the details behind the world, and to think so is like playing a nukige for the story.

  6. I’m so happy, all I can say is hurray, hurray and HURRAY!!! :XO:

I wonder if it’d pick up from the finale. I hope we’d finally get to know more about contractors and dolls. I wish Kirihara would be a bit more kicka$$ this time around. I wish Nov 11 would miraculously come back (I’m probably pushing it, but it’s a nice wish, no?). And more Hei, of course. :-)

  7. I feel like I’m not going to end up with high expectations because the first season, honestly, left a bit to be desired ultimately in terms of overall quality – I enjoyed it enough to be happy about a sequel in the works, but I’m not in the “OMG THAT WAS TEH BEST THING EVAR!!1″ crowd (although I’m not sure anyone is?).

But, anyway, we all know it was my MAD SKILLZ that got this thing a sequel, clearly – I decreed on Monday that it needed a sequel, and them BAM! Wednesday we had a confirmed sequel! Clearly, I = epic.

  8. @moritheil: yeah, and speaking of the devil… XD Having re-immersed myself into music after quite some time (of simply neglecting and taking it for granted) has made me realize the effect that it had on my ‘growth’ as an anime fan, or how it made me nurture the love for animes I watched in the past. Still thinking of other factors that affect the said nostalgia, hmm.

@Kiri: now that I think about it, I’ve never seen much anime sequels in my life… goes to show how few shows I really watched :| I think you’ve clearly shown why it’s not good to approach the 2nd season with the “desire to see the ‘answers’ mindset”, because, for all we know, the first season never really was about the said “plot”. And seeking answers to something the series never really set out on answering in the first place would be… :|
@KayDat: Yeah, let’s have faith in them BONES! XD The details are pretty murky at this point, hopefully more info will come out in the coming months :)
@ghostlightning: I understand where you’re coming from… I’ve been recommending Darker than Black to my friends, and all I really have to say about it is that it’s fascinating, the whole “world” is soo rich and awesome that it draws you in, the characters are so complex, etc. Despite giving it a 10 and proclaiming how awesome it is, it’s not the kind of anime that makes me go shout on top of the world “WATCH THIS OR YOU’LL REGRET THIS FOR THE REST OF YOUR LYF!!”.

While I find it sad that you didn’t enjoy watching Darker than Black, I can’t say if it’ll be worth all the trouble rewatching it just for the sake of seeing what you missed out on (I’d totally do that for Cross Game). but yeah, in the end, all I can say is, watch it in your own time, when it “calls” you out XD
@Owen: LOL, and when will that happen? Yoko Kanno might be dead by then

Not seeing the whole point of a series will always lead to disappointments, and while I do want people to see Darker than Black in another light, only a rare few would be so masochist as to rewatch it and see it in another light, and ultimately affirm and accept that they were stupid for not getting it lol.

@hazy: with the whole “depth” and unexplored regions of the world they showed us in the first season, I’m pretty sure they can show us a lot more. I’m prepared to know more about the world, and once again realize how much I don’t know about it. That’s how it works in DtB, right?

We’re free to wish for more Nov.11!! XD
@A Day Without Me: how could you forget about one of the greatest DtB fagn Owen! XD My relationship with DtB isn’t all that clear, I found it epic, storytelling and character-development-wise, but it’s not as close to my heart as other animes I’ve seen. I suggest you rewatch and see it in another light though, considering that you did like it but ended up disappointed because of certain plotholes (which I believe could be filled-in by seeing things from another POV) :)

  9. Whoop Whoop! I’m excited, and I will ride this with zero expectations. After all, going into a sequel with desired expectations is a bit like driving from the passenger’s seat… usually pisses the driver off. And we all know being driven around as a passenger is often more relaxing, even if the ride is bad.

    The potential is undeniable.

  10. @Ryan: I feel rather ashamed that I only got what you meant about the driving analogy you mentioned months back just now… lol. Sunday drive~! fits perfectly XD

  11. …or Out of the Dark, whatever works.

    Very nice!

While I really enjoyed the anime, I never had a tight bond with it. Though I must admit, the character designs were a major plus to the series. I really dig that style :-)
