Replace every occurrence of "G.I.Joe" in this post with "Code Geass" and I would find it incredibly relevant :P

P.S. Doujou's lips in the last pic look creepy ("over-kissable"??? XDDDD)

@0rion: blind fanboyism/fangirlism yes, been there, done that, now I've repented for my sins and I shall never go back [hopefully].

"It seems like there are quite a few people who have trouble reconciling the statement “that was terrible, and I enjoyed it.”" - yeah, and I find it amusing when people overreact to this =/

Gotta admire Kabitzin for maintaining his level-headedness at all costs.

@digitalboy: From my officemates' POV, it's like I was the bitter fool who was bickering over G.I.Joe's faults, not quite getting the message that I really did enjoy it in spite of all that. They're not as bad as, say, rabid fanboys, but their close-mindedness irks me nonetheless. Oh and I read your post and commented on it! :p

@Crusader: All I could remember of the cartoon was Destro's alien face (and his HUEG collarss) and Cobra Commander and his screechy voice loool.

"So now you Know and knowing is half the battle." - aye aye sir :P

@Caitlin: I'd like to think that the G.I.Joe crowd is not like that, especially the fans of the cartoon series who knew well how 'silly' it was, those who knew that this movie is also made in the name of good fun (as Crusader said). There will always be a bunch of them who gets sensitive when you blatantly point out what was so bad about it, that's for sure. It's like defending the underdog in this case. The trigger keyword isn't 'G.I.Joe was good', but that 'G.I.Joe sucks' or something :P

I wouldn't quite say so, it seems to me like most fans of old shows don't think those shows are 'good' they just cherish the memories of them,a nd it means a lot more to match that memory than to put out some random shitty movie that gets the spirit wrong. Hence the rage over Transformers.

I stand corrected. Clearly, I'm not a boy.

I'm not sure what term to use for the rabid fans who get into online arguments in the aforementioned categories - maybe cult-like or zealous. There are adults who will become quite antagonistic if you mention Harry Potter was "okay" - is the GI Joe crowd the same?

Caitlin, you lost me. Firstly, a cult following implies small, which is none of the things you listed, and GI Joe does, in fact, have a cult following, as does any popular 80s cartoon with a massive toy line.

I haven't seen it (and probably won't), but people bickering about movies makes me laugh, especially if they don't have a cultural cult following, Harry Pottery, Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, etc. It's just 1 movie! And a summer movie at that, the majority of which tend to be brainless and fun.

Silly usagijen it was funny as hell as it was the exact opposite of Channing Tatum's SRSBUSINESS film, he went from anti-war to pro-war in record time. Nano machines are the new magic, get use to it. Also you are a buzz kill because you did not watch the old cartoons or acquaint yourself with the comics which weren't so bad compared to the cartoons. Should have trolled your office mates by telling the they got to get tough...

It was very much GI Joe in spirit, this ain't Titanic it's supposed to be hamfisted.

So now you Know and knowing is half the battle.

I think you completely did the right thing. I think that movies do have the right to be 'good for what they are' and we shouldn't really bitch about the flaws of something that never wanted to meet our expectations, but that doesn't mean we have to like them for the reasons that others do. Liking it even for bad reasons is respectable.

I highly recommend you read my post on this: http://fuzakenna.com/2009/08/03/the-reason-a-phrase-like-shounen-exists-is-so-youll-stop-bitching-about-shows-that-werent-meant-for-you/

Personally I love a good trainwreck movie/series, and really what better way to show your appreciation than to troll the hell out of it?

It seems like there are quite a few people who have trouble reconciling the statement "that was terrible, and I enjoyed it." I can't even count the number of endless discussions I've been dragged into trying to explain my comments about Code Geass.

I like that you brought up Kabitzin's episode posts; he really does do a great job in his many episode summaries at poking fun at a series and pointing out its shortcomings while still being able to appreciate it. That's one reason why I love reading his blog.

Perhaps it's the difference between blind fanboyish / fangirlish (fanpersonish? there's gotta be a good gender neutral option there somewhere) admiration that refuses to see flaws, and a balanced but easygoing perspective that recognizes the flaws, but doesn't dwell on them, choosing instead to appreciate the good parts.
