In 1932, Nicholas and his assistant are talking whether the Flying Pussyfoot arrived safely. According to the assistant, the passenger cars were replaced besides the locomotive. Nicholas asks him if he knows about the circumstances. The assistant says only a little since the Nebula Company is restricting information. Still, it was a large accident and a few passengers have died. Nicholas asks if the woman was on board the train. The assistant confirms it. Nicholas then tells him that they'll wait for her report. The woman arrives. She is the one in work clothes. She is using a crutch. Her name is Rachel.

Nicholas then tells him that they’ll wait for her report. The woman arrives. She is the one in work clothes. She is using a crutch. Her name is Rachel.

Rachel goes to meet the director of Daily Days who asks her for the information she obtained at the train. He asks who were those in black suits and those in white suits. He also asks who or what the Rail Tracer is. Rachel remembers the time when Jacuzzi and the others were talking about the Rail Tracer. She was at the dining car then. Rachel says there was a monster in the Flying Pussyfoot.

In 1931, aboard the train, Ladd, Lua and two of his men, find a room filled with dead bodies horribly killed. Ladd wonders what method was used to kill in such a filthy manner. He sees a corpse without a face. He thinks it is probably Dune, one of his followers. He wonders who could have killed him. It would be difficult to exact revenge without knowing the identity of the killer.

The older conductor, after talking about the Rail Tracer, says there is no rescue method. He points a gun at the younger one but the younger one kicks the gun from the older conductor’s hands. He takes the gun and says the rescue method is to kill before one gets killed. He says he has a continuation to the story. One must believe in that story so the Rail Tracer wouldn’t come. In case it has come already, one must flee before the sun rises. He says, however, that it is too late. He who is the Rail Tracer will come after he fires the gun and kill the other. He shoots the gun.

Another conductor arrives. He asks what went on. The conductor who killed the older one points the gun at him. He says that there should have been only two conductors aboard the train. The other one says he isn’t anyone suspicious. The one with the gun wonders how the other could remain calm. He ask for the other’s identity and objective. The other says his secret is out already. The real conductor drops his gun. He says it seems the other won’t yield to a gun pointed at him so he will torture him instead. He opens a door and goes outside.

The one who posed as a conductor takes a gun but realizes the conductor has gone. He goes outside to check. Suddenly, someone pulls his feet. It is the conductor. He holds the other guy towards the train tracks and asks for his identity. The guy says he’s Dune. The conductor then pushes Dune’s face to the tracks. He learns that Dune is a friend of the Russo family. He asks why Dune is wearing a conductor’s uniform. He also asks how he obtained it. Dune admits he got it from an old conductor. He killed the old man afterwards. The young conductor tells Dune that the old man’s name is Tony. He pushes Dune’s face to the tracks.

Ladd is somehow excited at the though of Dune’s killer. He tells Lua and his men to watch out as there’s someone dangerous in the train. He then tells Lua to hide as he the black-suited men and the one who killed Dune. Lua nodds. Ladd reminds her that he will be the one to kill her.

The killer conductor also learns of the Lemures. He says he will become a monster, the Rail Tracer. He smears his face with blood.

Back to 1932, Rachel reports to the Daily Days director that the Rail Tracer was the conductor. She saw him wearing a conductor’s uniform. The Rail Tracer even talked to her. He asked for her ticket. Nicholas laughs. Rachel looks at him and then he stops. The director then says there’s no mistaking the conductor is Vino. Nicholas asks him why he thinks so. The director replies that Vino was feared as an elusive monster who appeared in cities throughout America. He appeared in one place, disappeared then appeared in another. He could be a conductor of a transcontinental train. The places where he appeared matched the train’s route.

Rachel says she has heard of Vino. He is also known as Claire Stanfield. He was raised by the father of the Gandor brothers who lived next door. He could be called the fourth brother of the Gandors. He was taken in by a circus afterwards. There, he developed a beyond human strength and technique. Vino’s killing methods are said to be filthy. The bodies he leave are mutilated beyond recognition.

The director asks Nicholas if he was able to confirm that Vino was in contact of the Gandor brothers. Nicholas says he did.

When the Flying Pussyfoot arrived at New York, a man handed something to Luck. It was a letter. Luck tells Keith about it. Some time after, the Gandor brothers met with Claire who tells them that he is no longer Claire and that he is no longer a conductor either. The Gandor brothers are a little shocked. Their adopted brother tells them they can call him Vino or Rail Tracer.

Going back to Rachel. she wonders why Vino committed indiscriminate murders. The director, however, thinks that it might look indiscriminate but it’s probably based on some sense of ethics that Vino upholds. Rachel comments that Vino even killed a child around ten years old. The director tells Rachel that perhaps she can ask Vino about it some time. Rachel is puzzled at this. The director says there are still many things he wants to ask, for instance, how she got her injury.

In 1930, Dallas and his cohorts woke up to see Ennis. They realize they were injected with something. Quates speaks and introduces himself to them. He tells Dallas and his gang that he intends to kill them after they tell him about what they know. He demonstrates on one of Dallas’ men. He then asks Dallas if he wants to make a deal with him. Dallas, however, is too shocked to answer. Quates leaves.

Quates asks Ennis about the other two at the site. Ennis replies they left soon after and that there were no traces of her being followed. Quates then tells her that it seems the complete product is at the headquarters of a mafia family, the Gandors. Quates suggests that he’ll let Dallas and what’s left of his gang retrieve it. They hate the Gandors, afterall. Since they have obtained immortal bodies, perhaps they will obey happily.

The old men go to Quates. They ask why Quates gave the medicine to the thugs. Quates tells them to shut up. He then explains that they might get into trouble with the mafia. The thugs will be their tools for that.

In the Flying Pussyfoot, the Lemures has found Mary, the senator’s wife. The leader explains that they are currently negotiating with her husband. If they can’t let him understand the deal, they’ll show him it’s nothing empty. They might kill her and her daughter. Until then, she is safe.

Ennis goes to the Gandor’s hideout. She observes as Dallas and his men go inside. They tell Berga that they will retrieve the box they left. Berga tells them that he can’t give it to them since they can’t tell if it’s Dallas’ property. They’ll have to wait until Luck returns the following day. Dallas and his men show their guns. They shoot. Dallas is amazed at the sight. He gets shot in the forehead, however. It’s Berga.

Berga stands up to call Luck. Dallas stabs a knife at Berga’s forehead. He and his men are happy that they are immortals.

Back to the train, Ladd finds Czeslaw. It seems Czeslaw has something to tell him. Ladd asks him what he wants. The boy says he has a request. Ladd tells him that depending on his request, whether he will laugh or get angry, that will decide Czeslaw’s lifespan. Czeslaw nods. He then asks Ladd to kill all the people in the dining car. Ladd is surprised. He asks if Czeslaw understood what he said. Czeslaw nods.

Anyway, I really thought the woman in work clothes is Claire Stanfield. I mean, who would have thought that the young conductor’s name is Claire. I haven’t heard of any guy named Claire. Still, the revelations regarding the conductors were a surprise. I thought they didn’t matter to the story already. Well, a few more episodes to blog and I’m done with Baccano!.Similar Posts:

Bah! Baccano! is over by now. I delayed doing a post for this episode because it features Isaac and Miria. i don’t like them. Perhaps this episode is my least liked episode too.

Anyway, the police and FBI are pursuing the suspects of serial robberies in several states. The number of cases has risen to 110. Pictures of the robbers are shown. They are Isaac and Miria. Seeing their pictures, someone asks why the they haven’t arrested the robbers. Mr. Sullivan from the FBI explains that the pictures were taken by citizens intrigued by the robber’s curious costumes. The citizens didn’t know the pair were robbery suspects until after they have taken the pictures. Before. their crimes had been too petty. The stole things like clocks, chocolates, candies, and a museum door once. Recently, however, they stole the assets of New Jersey’s millionaire family, the Genoards.

At the Flying Pussyfoot, Isaac is worried. He says they have forgotten something very important. Miria asks what it is. He replies it’s a souvenir for Ennis. Miria becomes worried also.

Jacuzzi, Nice and the others notice that there is someone near a coupling between the train cars. Jacuzzi thinks it’s the Rail Tracer but it disappeared. They try to look for it. Jacuzzi suggests that they climb up the train. He tells Donny to wait at the next coupling. He also tells him to watch out for the men in black suits. Nick comments that Jacuzzi’s serious. Nice says it’s the first time since eight of their friends were killed by the Russo family. Nick thinks that though Jacuzzi was crying then, he was amazing. He wonders how far Jacuzzi will go this time.

In 1932, Eve is taken to Gustavo’s dwelling. Gustavo introduces himself to the girl. He tells her they won’t kill her. Eve says she’s heard of the Runorata’s. Gustavo tells her that Eve’s grandfather, father and brother were on familiar terms with his boss. Eve asks why Gustavo kidnapped her. He replies that he has business with her brother, Dallas. He pulled a prank so Gustavo wants to scold him. Dalla’s whereabouts, however, are unknown. Gustavo hopes he can draw Dallas out by taking Eve hostage.

He asks if Eve is scared. She looks at him straight in the eye. Gustavo says she’s tough. He then tells her that Dallas blackmailed him by saying that he killed their father and brother. Eve asks the mobster if it’s true. Gustavo says he won’t tell. He asks if Eve is really related to her father and brother, whom Gustavo thought as pathetic. He says if they were as tough as her, they would have lived five minutes longer. He then says it was a slip of a tongue. Eve beings to pray.

In 1930, Eve is crying over Dallas. She hears a voice from outside. They are talking of how Eve is crying. They think she must be in love. Eve goes to her balcony to check it out. She sees Isaac and Miria in Native American outfits. Eve laughs at them. Isaac then tells Eve they want to hear her love story so they can give her advice.

Back to the train, Nice reports to Jacuzzi that she saw two men carrying machine guns but the people with them before disappeared: Isaac, Miria, Czeslaw, Mary, and Mrs. Beriam. She says they must have been taken somewhere. Jacuzzi tells her they have to look for them. Nice is somehow shocked. Jacuzzi then instructs her and Nick to go over the roof to the other side of the dining car while he goes with Donny. He then gives Nice a kiss.

Isaac and Miria learn from Eve that she’s crying over her brother. Eve says Dallas is nice to her but he’s gotten rough lately. He doesn’t come home often too. Isaac and Miria ask why. Eve replies it’s because they are rich. They see things that they don’t want to see. Miria suggests to Eve to stop being rich, that way she wouldn’t see things she doesn’t want to see. Isaac and Miria excuse themselves.

As Isaac and Miria went around the train, they see a room in a bloody mess of dead people. Isaac wonders if it’s the Rail Tracer. He also wonders where Jacuzzi is. Miria says he must have been eaten. Isaac tells her that since his body isn’t there, he must have been swallowed by the monster. He would be alive inside the monster’s stomach. The two start to cry.

Jacuzzi and Donny come. Isaac and Miria are glad to see them. Donny slips and they get stuck in the hallway. Jacuzzi then tells them to go to the luggage room. The Rail Tracer arrives after they leave. It trudges slowly in the hallway,

At the luggage room, Isaac tells Jacuzzi that they’re like in the Romance of the Three Kingdoms at the train. He explains that it’s a part of Chinese history where the country was divided in three and the rulers fought against each other. Isaac then explains that Jacuzzi must become Yoshitsune, a Japanese general in the late Heian and early Kamakura period (completely unrelated to the Romance of the Thee Kingdoms). Jacuzzi wonders if he can becomes something like him. Isaac and Miria tell him he can.

Jacuzzi says he want to save all the passengers and stop the black-suited and white-suited men but he’s not extraordinary. He says he killed three people the other day. Donny tells him it wasn’t him. It was them. Jacuzzi then explains that eight of their friends were killed by the Russo family so he robbed eighteen of their stores in a single day for revenge. But in the end, they had to kill more people.

Isaac continues to encourage Jacuzzi. He says even Yoshitsune has killed a lot pf people. He and Miria tell Jacuzzi he’s a good guy. They encourage him even more. Jacuzzi smiles.

Isaac and Miria took the Genoard family fortune. They tell Eve it’s to rid their house of misfortune. They ask for Eve’s name and then tell her to be happy. The two leave. Eve laughs.

Isaac and Miria tell Jacuzzi they’re going to find the Rail Tracer. They’ll tell it to leave the train and go home. Jacuzzi asks what if it doesn’t listen. The two say they will take care of it. Jacuzzi asks what if it doesn’t work. The two then reply that they will flee and hide. Donny says the monster is strong, they might get killed. Isaac and Miria wouldn’t listen. They leave.

After Isaac and Miria helped carry Dallas and his companions to Ennis’ car, the two ask her where she is taking them. Ennis says to the police. Isaac and Miria think they might get caught. They say they are doing something to atone for their sins. Ennis tells them she is afraid to face her own sins. Isaac and Miria then thank her for saving them. They encourage her. Ennis is a little surprised.

The two then introduce themselves. Ennis introduces herself to them too. Ennis cries as she gets into the car. Outside, Isaac and Miria wave their goodbyes.

Eve remembers a time when Dallas went home after a long time. It was the morning after their fortune was taken by Isaac and Miria. Dallas’ behavior changes. He says he only came to ask for some allowance. He slams the door then leaves.

The people guarding Eve have fallen asleep. She tries to leave. One of Gustavo’s henchmen notices her but he doesn’t do anything.

Oh well, I found this episode boring. Also, if Baccano! is set in America, why does Isaac and Miria know about the Romance of the Three Kingdoms or about Yoshitsune. I doubt the average American knows that and I doubt Isaac and Miria are well-read. Similar Posts:

In 1711, aboard the ship Advena Avis, a woman with glasses asks a man named Gerd if he is worried about his brother. Gerd says he is scared. He asks if alchemists are permitted to summon demons. He also asks if such things as immortality are necessary. The woman says she doesn’t know the answers but if it will lead to them discovering the panacea then they’ll have to deal with it. Gerd says he doesn’t think immortality would be beautiful. He’d rather have a limited life spent together with the woman, Sylvie. The woman says even if she has to give up immortality, as long as she can be with Gerd, she won’t be afraid.

At the dining hall, there is an argument. An old man, Szilard Quates, says that alchemists summoning demons is a heresy. A man dressed like a woman says that the panacea is every alchemist’s dream. Even if they have to call demons, as long as they can obtain it, history will change. Quates says it’s nonsense. The man who looks like a woman tells him that if the panacea turns out to be true, Maiza will stand besides Synesius and Zosimus as one of the greatest alchemists.

A man named Huey, goes to where Gerd and Sylvie are. He quotes from the Emerald Tablet, which is an ancient text said to reveal the secret of the primordial substance and its transmutation. He says that everything is united and the circle is closed. The demon they are thinking about might not be evil. Gerd asks Huey if he is anxious. Huey replies he isn’t. He’s just very interested at how man will change and live because of the demon and the panacea. Huey says he’s looking forward to it.

Maiza draws a symbol on the floor. He asks that everyone be brought there.

Meanwhile, some men are investigating the disappearance of a man named Pierre from the ship. Someone reports that an Italo is also missing. They hear a noise coming from the upper deck. One of them climbs up to check. He sees a cloaked figure. It crawls toward him and presses its hand against the man’s forehead. The man disappears. Only his clothing is left.

Maiza explains to everyone aboard the ship that that he doesn’t know whether what he is going to do would be the right thing for him. The one who taught it to him was a man who once attended the same school as him. That man hasn’t aged. He summoned a demon 300 years ago and succeeded in obtaining a panacea. Maiza says that obtaining the panacea is the alchemist’s desire. He announces that he will begin summoning the demon. He tells his fellow alchemists to watch over him until the last moment.

Maiza, Gerd and a man named Denkro step into the symbol Maiza has drawn. Maiza calls upon the demon to come. A voice tells him to stop.

A confusion has arised due to the disappearance of several men from the ship. Sylvie is worried about Gerd.

Back to the ritual, the voice says summoning chants are more than complaints. It says that there is no more need to call it’s name and that it hasn’t agreed if it should be called a demon in the first place. Maiza is given a bowl of some liquid. The voice says that whoever drinks upon it will have eternal life. Quates steps forward. The voice says it seems the old man wants to avoid death badly. Quates says that he only wants to quickly put an end to their ridiculous situation. Maiza pours the liquid into Quate’s cup. The old man drinks from it but nothing happens. He declares it’s all deception.

A blade suddenly strikes Quates head and he falls. The others are shocked. After a few minutes, however, the old man stands up. The others, seeing the miracle, rush to have their share of the elixir. The voice tells them not to quarrel as there’s enough elixir for everyone in the room.

Gerd looks at his brother, Maiza. Maiza drinks his share. Gerd drinks his too. Sylvie follows.

The voice then says that if they are tired of becoming an immortal and wish to die, they should go to the others and have themselves be eaten by them. The voice explains that it’s not an eating done with the mouth but one done with the right hand. One places his right hand on top of another’s head and just by thinking he wants to eat the other, the other will disappear into the right hand. The eater will obtain the knowledge and experiences of those he has eaten. It works the other way too. One could also share knowledge by putting their right hand on another’s head. Lastly, the voice says that those who drank the elixir are forbidden to use false names. If they do, they will never be able to find the other immortals. The voice also says that if they wish to know how to make the elixir, they must ask the one who summoned him.

The following day, another argument arises. Maiza wants to seal the knowledge regarding the elixir. He says it would be better if it remains just among those who drank it because it’s dangerous. Quates objects. Maiza says he can’t just trust anyone about it. Someone named Elmer says he agrees with Maiza. Denkro, Gerd and Sylvie say they agree with Maiza too. Fermet, the guy who looks like a woman, says that they can always share the knowledge in the future anyway so he’s going to support Maiza. A little boy, who seems to be Czelaw, says that he will follow Fermet. The others express their support.

Huey, however, says he will suspend his vote. He says it’s not something that can be solved with just a majority vote. Though he mostly agrees with Elmer and Fermet, he has vague feelings about it so he will delay his decision. Quates asks him when he will decide. Huey says maybe in a hundred or two hundred years. Even then, it wouldn’t be too late to decide.

Maiza thanks the fellow alchemists. He tells them he will keep the knowledge regarding the elixir.

Someone, however, seems to be eating the other passengers thus their disappearance. As Sylvie is looking for Gerd, someone puts his right hand on her head.

Maiza and Gerd are talking. Maiza says he’s regretting his actions. The knowledge they obtained isn’t something humans should posses after all. It will only create conflict. Maiza then tells Gerd that he’s been thinking of whether he should eat Quates. However, Maiza says that if there is an immortal who could bring happiness to the world, the knowledge would be irreplaceable. Maiza tells his brother he will share half of the knowledge with him. Gerd hesitates. He says the responsibility is too much for him. Maiza tells him he’s the only one he can trust in the ship. Unknown to the two, Quates, is eavesdropping outside.

Maiza goes to Quate’s room and tries to eat the old man but Elmer stops him. Maiza says Quates will eventually cause harm. Elmer tells him that someone will eventually start eating but Maiza shouldn’t be the one to start. Maiza then realizes that Quates isn’t in his room.

Quates has found Sylvie and is about to eat her. Quates says he knows Gerd is in love with her. He says there are no limits to what want can learn. Quates wants to learn more. He wants to eat more. Sylvie asks him if he ate Gerd.

Maiza and Elmer discover that Gerd is gone. They look for him.

Quates realizes that Sylvie didn’t drink the elixir. A man named Nile comes and cuts off Quate’s arm. He attacks Quates. Maiza and Elmer find Sylvie. Maiza goes after Quates. Elmer tells Sylvie that he will convince Quates. Sylvie asks him what is in Quates that he can convince. The stupidly optimistic Elmer says it’s not impossible.

Quates is cornered. Maiza tells him he won’t hesitate anymore. Elmer calls out to Quates distracting Maiza. The old man aims for Maiza’s head but Niles cuts him. Quates falls to the sea. Elmer has also fallen.

The voice from before tells Elmer that it finds him strange for trying to get the old man’s affections. It says it will grant him one wish. Elmer, who is sinking into the sea, makes his wish.

The others are able to find Elmer. He asks where Quates is. He is told of what happened to the old man. Elmer tells Sylvie to smile. She says she thought Elmer didn’t have a chance. She walks away.

The demon speaks to Huey. It says that humans are really greedy.

Years after that, Maiza visits Luck. He says it will be troublesome to have the Runorata as their enemy but there’s no need to fear Gustavo. Luck asks if there’s no need for them to intervene. Maiza replies they shouldn’t have any problems. After Maiza leaves, Luck says he feels Quates is just around the corner.

Anyway, this was a pretty interesting episode. It explained how everything began with the Advena Avis. Maiza, Quates, Huey, and Csezlaw have become immortals after drinking the elixir given by the demon. At first, I thought Quates was against it but after he drank of the elixir, it seems greed overcame him. Quates seems to be the central villain in Baccano! and the alchemists’ struggle, the main theme, sprinkled here and there with mafia stuff. The Rail Tracer could be nothing more than an immortal eating people in the train.

I wonder if Luck was among those in the Advena Avis. Or could he be the demon?

I also wonder how Chane is related to Huey.

As for the other immortals like Firo they must have gotten hold of the elixir which Mr. Barnes produced. I wonder if it wasn’t until then that Quates gained complete knowledge of how to make it.

Also, what was the wish that Elmer make? Would that wish be significant to the plot?

This episode focused on the alchemy aspect of the series. The Zosimus mentioned by Fermet is Zosimos of Panapolis, Greek alchemist and Gnostic mystic who provided one of the first definitions of alchemy. Synesius is a Greek bishop of Ptolemais who made contributions to alchemy.
Nicholas and Elean, the guy who attended to Eve, are in the director's office. Word of how Nicholas appeased Gustavo by telling him of Dallas' sister has reached the director. He doesn't seem pleased. Nicholas explains that he was threatened and Gustavo Bagetta's power would be too much for him. Afraid that he'd be killed, Nicholas says he accidentally told Gustavo of Eve (It didn't look accidental to me though).
Nicholas gets out of the director’s office. A Chinese employee waits for him outside. Nicholas asks him if there’s any news. The Chinese guy says there’s none. There’s no movement yet. Nicholas instructs the Chinese guy to inform him if anything happens. If Gustavo and the Gandors get into a dispute over Dallas, there should be some information leak. The Chinese guy nods. Elean is eavesdropping nearby.

In the Flying Pussyfoot, Spike, one of the guys who was assigned to look for the woman in work clothes, asks his companion for help through a hand-held radio. He tells them he is in the luggage room and that the others disappeared. He asks for reinforcements. Gunfire is suddenly heard.

The woman who climbed out the window is hiding underneath the train. She sees a black figure go inside. The black figure pulls a man and the man mysteriously disappears. After that, the black figure whispers something to the woman then returns inside. Frightened, the woman went the opposite direction.

In 1930, the men who harassed Barnes and whom Firo fought, are asking for someone’s help for revenge. The man they asked asks them why he should help. The men’s leader replies that Firo is an outsider and he is doing whatever he wants in their place. The guy they talked to say that people like them, who aren’t members, shouldn’t worry about their problems. The men’s leader tells the person he asked for help, Luck, that if he will help them, they will join his organization. Luck asks the men’s leader, Dallas, if he ever thought of why they never asked him to join them. He tells Dallas they he might have thought they feared him because they didn’t interfere with his outrageous behavior but the real reason is that they didn’t even see the slightest use for him. Luck says that thanks to Dallas’ group of robbers, the police are too busy dealing with them. He says that they are nothing more than decoys.

Dallas says Luck doesn’t know anything about them. Luck tells him that he does know that Dallas was done in by a man much younger than him. Berga arrives and throws Dallas and his group out. Luck tells him that he doesn’t know them.

Dallas left the wooden box with the bottles of medicine in the Gandor’s place. Berga and Luck don’t know whether it is liquor. They set it aside.

In the train, Czeslaw leads the senator’s daughter out of the dining car. Czeslaw finds some sort of closet and tells Mary, the girl, to hide there. He says he well take a look at how things are at present and that he will come back after. He closes the door. Czeslaw thinks it’s one nuisance taken care of. He can start finding the Immortals.

Jacuzzi, Nice and Donny go to a room where they think Nick is kept. They go outside and discover that Nick is indeed there. Earlier, Lua and one of Ladd’s men were also kept inside. Ladd found them but only took Lua with him. Nick asked Ladd to untie him but Ladd asked if there’s anything in it for him. He said if Nick had been a woman, he could ask him for a kiss or so. He then told Nick to die. It would be his destiny to die on that place.

Nice relates what happened to Jacuzzi and the rest. Suddenly, they notice blood flowing on the floor.

Mary is inside the closet scared. She knocks something (a broom perhaps) off. One of Ladd’s men who is in the hallway hears the sound. Mary tries not to make a sound but the man in the hallway comes, opens the door and finds her. He tells her not to scream. He thinks he shouldn’t do it to Ladd but it might be alright to take the girl for himself. He says, unlike Ladd, he likes to hurt people weaker than him. The guy suddenly falls. His back bleeds. Chane has just stabbed him.

Jacuzzi and his group find themselves in the hallway with Ladd and his men. Ladd asks Jacuzzi if the man kept in the room earlier is with him. Jacuzzi asks him how he knew his name. Ladd introduces himself and tells Jacuzzi that he should already know why he knows him. Ladd approaches him and asks what he is doing in the train. He says he’s going to take control of the train and that he will kill half of the passengers but depending on the circumstances, he might kill everyone. Jacuzzi clenches his fist, trembling. Ladd tells Jacuzzi and the others that if they don’t want to be killed, they should jump off the train.

Jacuzzi asks Ladd if he or his men killed the conductors. Ladd doesn’t seem to know about this. He tells his men that they will go to the conductor’s room. They leave Jacuzzi and his group but Ladd says that he will make up for it later. He then says that whoever killed the conductor and whoever did what happened in the room with blood, wasn’t them.

Nick asks Jacuzzi if he’s just going to let Ladd go that easily. Jacuzzi says there’s someone else they have to beat first. Jacuzzi goes inside the room with blood.

Isaac and Miria are mad after almost being hit by Ennis’ car.

Dallas and his men are at an alley. His men ask him what they will do, now that the Gandor’s don’t want to deal with them. Dallas tells them to shut up. He says one day he will kill Firo and the Gandors. His men tell him that even so, Dallas’ family is still rich, they might give him some money to play around. Dallas says that his family said they donated all of their previous month’s assets to robbers. One of his men says Dallas must still have enough to eat. He also comments that he heard Dallas has a cute sister. Dalls becomes angry. He tells the guy to stay away from his sister. If he does something to her, he won’t let him get away with it.

Isaac and Miria are playing with their masks. They reminisce their stealing adventures. In the beginning, they were thieves of time and stole clocks. Then they tried to steal an entire museum but they only managed to steal the door which was pretty heavy. After reflecting on their actions, they decided to do good deeds and stole the inheritances of very rich people so that there would be no fighting over the inheritance. Isaac then suggest to Miria that for their final job, they will do another good deed. Isaac says that they are going to take the mafia’s black money, for example. Miria agrees.

Dallas passes by, bumping Miria. Isaac and Miria tell him to watch where he’s going. Dallas’ men comes.

one night in 1931, Gustavo and his men went to Eve’s mansion. Gustavo orders his servant to make a phone call. Unknown to them, the Chinese guy from Daily Day’s is observing. Gustavo’s henchman makes a call and says he’s from the newspaper company and that they found information regarding Dallas.

Eve’s servant who received the call tells Eve about it. She says that the man who called hung up after. She suggest that they go to the newspaper company’s office.

Gustavo and his men are waiting outside. When Eve went out of the house, they nabbed her.

Jacuzzi and the others are horrified at what they saw in the room. It must have been something really gruesome. One puzzling thing about it is that there’s blood in the ceiling as well. Nick goes to the window to get some fresh air and sees someone outside, in the coupling between the train cars in front. He informs the others of this. They all take a look. Jacuzzi wonders if it’s the Rail Tracer.

Ennis passes by the alley where Isaac, Miria, Dallas, and his men, are. She sees Miria being held at gunpoint. Ennis goes inside the alley. Dallas is beating Isaac up. Ennis seem to recognize them as the one who took the bottles from Barnes (based on his memory which Quates showed her). She approaches the guy who is holding Miria and delivers a swift kick. Without effort, Ennis punches a guy and hits another. They fall. Only Dallas is left. Dallas tells her that he’ll let Isaac and Miria go. He asks Ennis to let him go off the hook. Ennis tells him she has business with him. Ennis punches him in the stomach. Dallas falls.

Isaac and Miria come to Ennis. Isaac says he’s amazed he handled all of them by herself. Isaac and Miria thanks her foe saving a complete stranger like themselves. Ennis remembers them as the couple she almost hit before with her car. She smiles. Isaac and Miria tell her to ask them anything in return. She asks them if they can help her carry the four men to her car.

The Chinese guy whom Nicholas sent to watch outside Eve’s house reports that Eve has been kidnapped by Gustavo. The Daily Days director has heard of it as well. Elean is mad at Nicholas. He asks him what he is planning. Nicholas says he doesn’t think Gustavo will hurt Eve yet. The director tells them to calm down. He says he is worried that the rivalry between the Gandors and the Runoratas is getting out of control because of them. He asks if Nicholas has taken that into consideration. Nicholas replies that he has a fool-proof measure to prevent what the director feared from happening. Nicholas leaves the director’s office.

Elean tells the director that Nicholas looks like he’s scheming something. The director says he is aware of that. Nicholas must be trying to make a way for the Gandors and the Runoratas to clash head on. He must be hoping interesting things would happen. Elean asks the director if he is just going to let Nicholas do his thing. The director replies that even though, it’s something top secret, there are still a lot unknown about Dallas. Whether he became an Immortal or not, they might learn something from the events. It’d be perfect for them.

The director says that there will be some sparks between the two families. He says the legendary assassin, Vino, or Claire Stanfield is headed for New York. She seems to be invited by Luck Gandor and is currently on board the Flying Pussyfoot.

Ennis has taken Dallas and his men to Quates. Quates says he doesn’t think he’ll gain much knowledge from “eating” him. He tells Clare to prepare something. Clare takes a syringe and injects some liquid into Dallas.

Anyway, I was awestruck upon watching this episode. Things are getting better than what I had previously thought. For one, the revelation that the guy from the previous episodes, is just amazing. His sister Eve and the Runorata family has been looking all over for him in vain, unaware that he is just there.

Aside from that, most of the characters have started to interact with the others. Before it seemed as if we are looking at different stories but the point where these individual stories intersect has become clearer.

I wonder if the Rail Tracer is something supernatural. If it isn’t, he/she must have some ability like Quates to “eat” people. Quates “eats” people to gain their knowledge, and other stuff. This plays on the belief among cannibals that eating someone, especially that person’s brain, would enable one to gain that person’s abilities, among other things.

I also wonder who Vino or Claire Stanfield is. Could she be the woman in work clothes?

In 1931, in a dark alley, Jacuzzi Splot is being surrounded by gangsters with guns. Frightened, Jacuzzi tells the men that they can settle things in a peaceful manner. He asks the men that they lower their guns. He tells them that he doesn’t have money with him. Eventually, Jacuzzi cries. The men are surprised. They wonder if he really is the one in the wanted poster. There’s no doubt about it but they think Jacuzzi is too pathetic. A man tells Jacuzzi to stop crying. He says he isn’t crying but he cries some more. The man grabs Jacuzzi by the collar and orders him to tell his name otherwise they will put a hole in his head. Jacuzzi does so.

In the Flying Pussyfoot, Jacuzzi discovers that the conductors have been killed. He thinks the Rail Tracer has caught up with the train. Nice and Donny come and could not believe the sight they saw. Jacuzzi tells Nice he’s relieved to see them. Nice tells him that she and Donny managed to come but Nick was caught by the people in black suits. She says that the members of the orchestra they saw before boarding seem to be train robbers.

Nice says that they will definitely go and save Nick later. She then asks Jacuzzi what happened in the conductor’s room. He replies that the Rail Tracer has come. If they don’t run soon, they will be erased.

Suddenly, gunfire is heard. Paranoid, Jacuzzi asks where’s it coming from. He says that they must escape quickly but he then tells Nice that if they run away, everyone will disappear. He tells Nice that they will drive off the men in black suits and the Rail Tracer.

Back to Jacuzzi in 1931, the man who grabbed him says that he did not expect the boss of the delinquents who caused so many problems for the Russo family would be such a coward. He hits Jacuzzi in the head with his gun. He then says that he was hoping he’d be a bad ass character. He kicks Jacuzzi. Jacuzzi tries to say that the one who started it, the ones who killed eight of his friends, were them. The man says it was only natural. Jacuzzi tells him that it’s the reason why they decided to radically oppose the Russo family. The man points his gun at Jacuzzi. A train passes by.

Jacuzzi tells the men to lower their guns as he doesn’t want to kill them. The men say he’s the one who will be killed. Jacuzzi calls out to Donny to wait a little longer. The man tries to shoot but Donny arrives and crushes the man’s hands. Nice and more people come. The gangsters fall. Quickly, Jacuzzi and the others leave the scene as the fireworks that Nice threw on one of the gangsters exploded.

In 1930, as ordered by Quates, Ennis finds Barnes… dead. But not for long. He goes back to life but loses consciousness.

When Barnes awakened, he finds himself in a room with Ennis, Quates and some other men. Quates asks Ennis why she didn’t kill him. She replies that she thought it wouldn’t be too late to kill him after he tells them what happened. Quates tells her not to think as she is only a homunculus he created. She should be able to kill others without hesitation.

Quates then addresses the men in the room. He asks why Barnes caused the fire and what did he do with the completed medicine. He asks if they should give him, the person who lost the medicine that was supposed to take the fear of aging away, a chance to explain. Quates says he doesn’t want to but they have to know what happened to the finished product.

He says there is a method, which the other men know. He will use Barne’s memories, knowledge, experience and life. Barnes tries to beg but Quates puts his hand on Barnes face. Barnes trembles but he disappears completely, absorbed by Quates.

Quates then says that Barnes managed to save two bottles of the medicine from the fire but it seems that the bottles were taken from him. Quates says that he knows the faces of those who took it. He calls Ennis and tells her that there was someone who was looking for her. He touches Ennis’ forehead and shows her Barnes’ memory of Firo. Barnes then instructs Ennis for the four guys that took the medicine from Barnes. Ennis goes.

A man is calling some mafia boss that he’s searched everything. The mafia boss tells him that if he can’t find Dallas Genoard, then his life will be considered forfeit. The man says that he will bring him without fail. The mafia boss hangs up. The guy who called reprimands his men. They were the ones who went to Daily Days for information regarding Dallas. They say the newspaper company only had ambiguous information and that the information must be bought. Their leader says he’ll go there himself. The newspaper company must have looked down on them because they are only his lackeys.

Two men are talking about someone being incompetent, a disposable underling. One of them says that the matter must be kept silent. He then asks how a lowly juvenile delinquent obtained immortal flesh. The other one says that person must have gotten hold of some incomplete product. He is invulnerable to wounds but not against aging. The other person, the mafia boss from earlier, asks if the person they are talking about is immortal. The person he is talking to says that what they are aiming for is complex, mysterious and questionable but if they can obtain it, happiness that’s never seen before will be in their grasp. He says that he wouldn’t mind losing his heart for it. He then says that Huey Laforet is in jail, the mafia boss should be able to beat him.

Firo, meanwhile is being initiated into the camorra. The camora’s leader asks him if he wishes to become a camorrista. Firo nods. The leader explains that the camorra is an organization that was created in a prison in their mother country, Italy. He says that if Firo continues down that road, it will sometimes happen that he will go to prison and will lose his freedom. It’s also possible that he will lose his life at the end of a fight with someone he once called friend. He asks Firo if he understands. Firo says he does. He then tells Firo that his right foot stands in prison and his left foot stands in a coffin. He asks Firo if he would still be able to obtain glory with his right hand, and if necessary, end his life with his left hand. Firo says yes. The leader asks that if Firo’s father kill their friends, will he be able to kill his father and avenge his friends. Firo nods.

The camorra leader smiles and tells him that Firo can still turn back, from one who is used to one who uses people instead. He says if Firo continues, he won’t be able to turn back anymore. He says he believe Firo would do just fine on a straight path. He asks again if Firo chooses to continue. Firo replies that he is more than prepared. The leader tells Firo to demonstrate his preparedness. Firo takes a dagger.

In the dining car of the flying Pussyfoot, Isaac and Miria plan to look for Jacuzzi and Nice. Isaac says he’ll intimidate the black-suit guys and the white-suit guys and the knife-wielding one with a pistol and run away when they’re off guard. The senator’s wife tells her daughter to hide with Czeslaw. She says their father will surely come and rescue them. She then tells Czeslaw to take good care of her daughter. Czeslaw nods and takes the senator’s daughter’s hand.

Suddenly, the Lemures arrive. Their leader, Goose, tells the senator’s wife that he has a special favor for her husband. Czeslaw and the senator’s daughter manage to hide under a table just in time. The senator’s wife tells Goose to promise they wouldn’t hurt any of the passengers. Goose replies that it will depend on her husband’s response and the government’s.

The mafia guy from earlier comes to the Daily Days office. Nicholas attends to him. He says that he is surprised to see Gustavo of the Runorata famly. He then says that he feels honored to have the executive come over. Gustavo is amazed that Nicholas knows him. Nicholas says there’s nothing they don’t know. Gustavo tells him that it seems Nicholas made a fool out of his subordinates. Nicholas says its ridiculous as they always give their customers the best service. Gustavo grabs Nicholas by the collar. The other employees take their guns but they seem afraid as the men with Gustavo have guns too. The employees drop their guns and raise their hands.

Gustavo demands that Nicholas tell him where Dallas Genoard is. He tells Nicholas that if he wants to live long, he must answer him. Nicholas asks him to let go. He says he’ll tell him. Gustavo drops Nicholas and asks again. Nicholas replies that they don’t know except the things they told his subordinates. Gustavo insists. Nicholas smiles then tells him that the Gandor family are after Dallas as well. He asks Gustavo if it will be bad for them if the Gandors found him first. Gustavo asks how to beat the Gandors in the chase. Nicholas whispers to Gustavo that Dallas has a little sister. She’d be a perfect bait for her brother.

Back to Firo’s initiation, he and Maiza are to duel with knives. The man who serves as the referee asks if they have no ill feelings with each other. If anyone of them stabs the other in the chest, he will kill the cuplrit right away. The fight then begins. Maiza attacks first but Firo manages to dodge his attack. Their knives lock together. Firo slides his and manage to wound Maiza’s arm. Maiza announces that the fight is over. The people clap their hands and congratulate Firo. Firo is amazed to see that Maiza’s wound has already healed. The referee man comes and tells Firo that he’s the first candidate executive to win against Maiza. The leader tells Firo that he is a splendid camorrista. He fires his gun into the air as a salute. They then hear from floor above that an Isaac was killed.

Goose asks the senator’s wife where her daughter is. He asks her what happened. She lies that her daughter was taken by the men in white. Goose asks her who they are. The senator’s wife answers that she doesn’t know them but it seems that they were looking for her. Goose says he’ll keep a look out. He tells her to come to their room. Goose suddenly notices something. The senator’s wife thinks that he might look under the tables to search for her daughter but Goose looks at an open window. He points his gun at someone siting near the window and asks who opened it.The man replies that it was a woman in work clothes. When the shooting started, she opened it and went outside. Goose looks outside.

At the other end, the woman who went out tries to look inside. Chane, who is in the hallway, senses something. She looks at the window but no one is outside. The woman in work clothes hid under the train.

Goose orders some of his men to look for the woman in work clothes. Two of them go. The other one goes outside then finds one of the guys who went outside. He asks where the other one, George went. The guy says he disappeared. The guy who went out last sees something from a window. The lights go off. A shadowy figure takes the other guy and disappears.

Anyway, things have started to look interesting. The deal about the immortals has finally come out and as I thought, an incomplete product was made earlier. The immortal characters must have gotten hold of it. However, if one still ages despite it, how could Quates or Maiza be still alive, provided that they were existed 200 years ago.

I was amazed to find that the Rail Tracer is real. I thought it was just a story and that the Lemures were using that story as an excuse.

I think that it was despicable for Nicholas to “use” Eve to avert Gustavo’s anger off him. Well, he was in a risky position but still…

I thought this would be a Jacuzzi episode as the previous one was a Ladd one. However, this episode also focused on the other characters: Ennis and Quates, Firo, and the Runorata famiy. I didn’t like Jacuzzi at first. He’s whiny and that tatoo in his face is weird (it must have a story though) but he’s okay I guess.

In 1931, aboard the Flying Pussyfoot, Ladd Ruso hears machine guns. He thinks the night has become interesting. Bruno passes him in the hallway. Ladd skips his way to the dining car, wondering what’s going on there.

In Chicago, ten hours before the train’s departure, a man is reprimanding two of his minions. The minions say a part of robbers wearing a Babe Ruth and a Ty Cobb uniform (Isaac and Miria) stole their goods. They’re also talking about someone named Sidalis who screwed up and was found dead at the factory grounds. He seems to have been killed by Jacuzzi. The minions told their boss that those people should not be underestimated. Their boss says that they will deal with the rubber duo first. He says they will put heat on every couple in the city.

The boss’ nephew comes and tells him not to do it. People will think it’s the inferiority complex of an unpopular old man. The nephew is Ladd Russo. His uncle tells him he does not have time to deal with him. He tells Ladd to get out but Ladd says his uncle is saying harsh things. He says that the only thing is uncle cares for less than his life is money, which has been plundered from him by other people. Ladd picks up a wanted poster with Jacuzzi in it. He then says he brings good news. His uncle tells him he does not want to listen to any “good” news he brings. Ladd says that his uncle will make a thorough search for the criminals. He chokes one of his uncle’s minions, harder and harder and harder, until, as Ladd says, they start to foam and their eyes look like they’re going to pop out. Ladd then takes a knife and slits the throat of the other one.

Ladd’s uncle tells him that he is a crazy murderer but Ladd says his uncle says shameful things to the best assassin the Russo family has. Ladd’s uncle says it’s because he has no other use except being an assassin. Ladd slams the table and asks his uncle if he ever thought of counting on him. Ladd says that a special express train, the Flying Pussyfoot, will depart from Chicago that night. It goes directly into New York without any stops. Ladd says he will go and take and ride and maybe crash the thing right into the middle on Manhattan. He says that it’s just bluff though, to intimidate the people. If they don’t pay up then they’ll turn it into a kidnapping accident involving all the passengers. If they kill half the passengers, Ladd thinks the railway company will pay them a nice amount. He says its a good idea as he gets to kill people and his uncle gets money. His uncle tells him to leave.

Ladd’s subordinates, including Lua, enter. Ladd says they are his friends who have the same hobby as him. Ladd introduces Lua to his uncle as his lover, girlfriend and fiancée. Ladd says she is quiet but it bings down his high tension. Ladd’s uncle gets mad. He tells him that he go kidnap and kill people but he must not mention his name. Ladd points a rifle at his uncle. He tells him that killing is only something he does for his own pleasure. He then says that there’s a special type of people he likes to kill. These are those who feel as if they are completely safe, never thinking that they might die the next moment. Ladd says, in other words, people like his uncle.

Ladd’s uncle thinks he’s dead meat but Ladd tells him that there’s no way he’d kill his uncle. Ladd says that the gun is empty and besides, he has always been in his uncle’s care. Ladd’s uncle is relieved. Weakly, he tells his nephew to disappear. Ladd says he’ll do so but he’ll need to change clothes first. He says he’ll wear white so his uncle can see the blood stains of people he killed.

Back to the train, at the dining car, the men at the other end shoots the guy with two guns in the middle, who seems to be one of Ladd’s men. The guy in the middle dies. A woman climbs up the window and hides outside. Ladd comes in and sees the guy in the middle dead. He smiles and tells the men that he is unarmed. He approaches a man, kicks him and shoots his gun at the one behind him. Anyway, to make things shorter, Ladd punches the man making references of boxers Jack Johnson and Jack Dempsey. The guy Ladd punched, a Lemures, says there’s no way Ladd can get in the way of their Sir Huey. Ladd says he has no interest in his name nor of their Sir Huey but what’s certain is that they are his enemies. Ladd continues to pummel the guy to death.

One of Ladd’s men comes and asks him what happened. Ladd only smiles. He approaches the senator’s wife. He tells her that the order has changed. After he has taken care of all the men in black suits, it will be her turn. He tells the men to go and leave the people in the dining car.

Czeslaw, who’s being embraced by the senator’s wife, grins and thinks that he can use Ladd and his men.

Eve and her servants leave the Daily Days without a hint of Dallas’ whereabouts. Her servants comfort her saying that Ladd is surely alright and that he will return.

The guy who talked to Eve earlier tells Nicholas that it doesn’t make him feel good pretending not to know. Nicholas tells him it’s not like they lied as it’s true they don’t know most of it. He says the people from Runorata were fooled. It seems that Gustavo is being blackmailed by Dallas with the news of killing the head of the Genoard family. Nicholas thinks it must be a lie. There must be a deeper lying reason for Baltro Runorata. The other guy says that the Dallas case is top secret. Nicholas asks him about it. He doesn’t seem to know. He asks if the Gandor brothers took care of Dallas. The other guy tells him it was a slip of the tongue. Nicholas asks why he can’t tell it to a colleague like him. The other guy apologizes and says the director forbade him from telling it to others. Nicholas thinks it must have something to do with the people who can’t die.

In 1930, Isaac and Miria went to the hat shop where Maiza and Firo bought theirs, the two robbers also bought hats for disguise. They tell the man at the shop to forgot that they came. If he told the police of them, they say they will beat him. Isaac and Miria then leave, almost forgetting their change.

Anyway, Isaac tells Miria that since they started robbing two years ago, from San Francisco to New Jersey, been to 87 places and seen a lot of things, there never was a time he exposed Miria to danger. Miria says it’s amazing. Isaac says they’re gonna do their last big job in New York. After that, they will live leisurely in Miami. They plan on buying a big house, adding a pool with ten stoves so it wouldn’t be cold to swim at night and a train from the gate to the door. A car comes and knocks the two off.

Back to the train, one of the man in a black suit who escaped Ladd and returned to their leader, reporting what happened. Chane goes out without saying anything. A man asks the leader, Mr. Goose, if it will be alright. The leader replies that she pulls through when she has too and besides, she only has until the next day to live.

Back to Isaac and Miria, Ennis was driving the car that almost hit them. The old man with her tells her to watch out. Ennis tells him that the two suddenly danced on the road, the brakes didn’t make it. The old man tells her to go. He says he couldn’t understand youngsters at the present but then again, he couldn’t understand youngsters from 200 years ago. He says that ever since Maiza lost his senses, he lost faith in those younger than him.

Back to the train again, Ladd’s men asks Ladd who the men in black suits are. Ladd says that that they can kill two or three each. He then says that it’s dangerous for them to gather so that must split up. He’ll go and tell Lua about it. He tells his men that it’s up to them to assemble after, when they think they’ve killed enough.

Ennis and the old man arrive at some old building. The old man taps his foot and someone opens a trap door. He says it’s been a long time. The old man with Ennis is Mr. Quates. He says twenty years isn’t that long. Downstairs, other old men greet Quates. Quates asks where Barnes and Stagen are. The men reply that Barnes is in the distillation room but Stagen passed away the previous year. Quates says if only Stagen lived for another year, he could have been with them too. Quates then tell the old men that their fear for sudden death and aging will end that day. He says they finally succeeded in creating a cure-all elixir. The finished product seems to be with Barnes. Quates then orders Ennis to pick Barnes up. Quates then tell her that if he has touched the product, she must kill him without hesitation. If he failed to preserve the medicine and it becomes useless, she must kill him too. Ennis nods then leaves.

Barnes is the old man that was beaten by gangsters and saved by Firo. When Ennis came to look for him, she bumped into Firo.

In the train, Nice and Donny hurry to the luggage room. Someone with bloody hands peeps through the window from outside.

The first half of this episode seems to focus on Ladd. He really is psychotic, talking a lot and killing a lot.

Quates knows Maiza. Could it be that he knows him from 200 years ago. Maiza seems to be in the Advenna Avis. I wonder how the other characters got hold of the stuff that made them immortal. Quates must have succeeded in creating it, even before the one with Barnes was made. But perhaps the one he created before was imperfect.

I wonder who the person who peeped from outside the train was. Well, there was a woman who went out through the train window. I wonder who she is. She appears in the end sequence but not in the opening. Similar Posts:

Now that I have caught up with my Seirei no Moribito and Mononoke backlog, it’s time to work on my Baccano! backlog. The episodes just lay in my hard disk, unwatched. Thankfully, the series isn’t over yet so my backlog isn’t that big.

The year is 1932 and Eve Genoard is searching for her brother, Dallas. She looks for him by the sea where he disappeared but no trace of him can be found.

Two men visit what looks like a newspaper press. A man named Nicholas attends to them. He says the two men must be under the command of Runorata family’s Gustavo. Surprised, the two men asks Nicholas how he knew. Nicholas replies that it’s because he is an employee of Daily Days. He says that for an information shop, there is nothing they don’t know about.

One of the visitors ask if Nicholas knows about a Dallas Genoard. Nicholas replies that Dallas is the second son of the famous Genoard family, a notorious juvenile delinquent whose whereabouts are currently unknown. The visitor demands that Nicholas tells where Dallas is. Nicholas tells him that the information would cost $500 and on top of that, he would like to hear information from the two men in return. Nicholas asks why the Runorata family is after Dallas Genoard. The visitor asks what will be done with that information. Nicholas tells him that an information shop without information is nothing. The visitor says that suppose they give information and someone would ask for it. Nicholas tells him that of course they’d sell that information. It’s their business, after all. The visitor becomes angry but before he can pull his gun from his coat, the employees in the office point their guns at the visitors. Nicholas apologizes and explains that their business is quite dangerous. He continues to ask the visitors why they are looking for Dallas.

The year is 1930 and a man and a group of thugs are having a fight in an alley. The man says he is part of the Runorata family and thus the thugs can’t just touch him. He gets punched though. One of the thugs say that the Runorata family are like their servants. He kicks the man he just punched. Luck and Berga arrive and stop him. Luck tells the men to leave since they are in Gandor turf. Luck says he does not want the Runorata name spoken in their territory. The thugs and the guy they beat leave.

Back to 1931, aboard the Flying Pussyfoot, Ladd is celebrating with Lua. They dance and Ladd tells Lua that he’s so excited he can’t sleep that night. Lua tells him that if he’s looking forward to it so much, he should go himself. Ladd says it can’t be helped. He lost at drawing straws. He says his dream is to kill everyone who wants to live more than her in the night. He then says that in the end he will kill her. Lua tells him that she doesn’t mind if he will kill her then. Ladd says that the night is still overflowing with people he has to kill, it’d be a long long time before he can kill her. He tells Lua not to die until then. She nods.

Someone interrupts them and tells Ladd that Vicky is in a very good mood. Ladd says he is very jealous. He thinks Vicky must have killed someone already. Lua suggests that he go and check. Ladd likes her suggestion and he goes out.

He bumps into Jacuzzi in the hallway. Jacuzzi apologizes and tells him that the train is in danger that’s why he must go to the conductor’s room. Jacuzzi rushes off. Ladd seems to recognize him. He remembers a wanted poster with Jacuzzi’s face on it. He says the night has become very interesting. He tells Lua to check the conductor’s room with one of his men. If she sees a kid with a tattoo on his face, he tells her to grab him. Lua complies. Ladd wonders what the terrible thing Jacuzzi spoke about could be.

A man and his companion are in some sort of basement. One of them sets his glove on fire. His companion tells him to stop otherwise his hand will burn to ashes. The other one says it’s alright. He puts off the fire in his glove. The man’s name is Randy and his companion is Pezzo. Randy says it will be great entertainment for that night’s party and that Firo will certainly be happy. Pezzo pours fluid into his glove. He says he’s going to do it as well. Randy tries to stop him, saying Pezzo’s glove is made of cloth, but it is too late, Pezzo’s glove is already on fire. Randy explains that it only works if the glove is made of leather. He tells Pezzo to take his glove off. Pezzo knocks the fluid container into the floor, spilling its contents. Pezzo succeeds in taking the glove off and he throws it to the floor. The spilled fluid catches fire. Pezzo says he thought he was going to die. Randy tells him he doesn’t want to be burned alive with him but they realize that the place is on fire.

Meanwhile, an old man pounds a rat with a hammer. Splat went the rat but miraculously, it resurrected. The old man calls for his master named Quates, saying something is complete. His place, however, caught fire. He tries to take a box filled with bottles but it is too heavy for him. The place is falling apart. He takes two of those bottles and places it in a box filled with sand. He takes that box with him and escapes.

Eve and her two servants visit the Daily Days’ office. A woman servant tells her it is the information shop where her friend works. The old man says that it looks like a newspaper company, they might be able to trust it to a certain extent. The woman servant tells Eve to go ahead and inquire about her brother Dallas. As they are about to enter, the two men from the Runorata family leave.

Maiza and Firo are at a shop that sells hats. Maiza tells Firo that the hats of the executives in the Martello family have been bought there. He bought his there as well. Maiza picks a hat for Firo. Firo tries it. He says he likes that hat. Maiza then welcomes Firo to the camorra. Firo tells him that he is a day early. Maiza tells him that the ceremony has already started.

As they go out of the shop, Maiza bumps into Isaac who is with Miria. Maiza apologizes and Isaac tells Maiza to watch where he walks. Firo and Miza smile.

They see that some building nearby is on fire. Firo tells Maiza he’ll go and take a quick look. The firemen have already arrived at the scene. Firo bumps into Ennis. Ennis apologizes and tells him that she is looking for someone. She leaves. Firo finds a button from Ennis’ suit. He goes after her.

Back to the train, Jacuzzi bumps into his men. He tells them the train might disappear so he is going to the conductor. Jacuzzi runs off. Nice arrives and asks where Jacuzzi is. The two men tell her that he went off to see the conductor. Nice tells the one named Donny, the burly man, that they will check the luggage room as they take Jacuzzi back. She tells the one named Nick that she’s counting on him for the dining car.

Nick doesn’t understand what Nice wanted him to do with the dining car. He thinks that perhaps she wants him to keep an eye on the people at the dinning car. Or perhaps she meant that if they were caught committing a robbery, they wouldn’t want the people to make a commotion and stop the train, so Nice might have asked him to keep the people in the dining car quiet. He decides that Nice must have meant the latter. He takes a pocket knife and goes inside the dining car.

Meanwhile, the Lemures are getting ready. Their leader addresses them that they will soon begin their operation to save Sir Huey.

Back to Eve, her servant Samantha’s friend, Bruno, an African-American man in Chinese garb, comes. He is shown a picture of Dallas. Eve asks him if he knows her brother. Bruno says that Dallas Genoard, who disappeared a year ago, is the biggest juvenile delinquent of their age. He says Dallas is aggressive, a bully of the weak, detestable and a bastard of the worst kind. Eve is saddened and she says that her brother was kind to her. Bruno realizes his insensitivity and apologizes. He assures Eve that her bother will surely be found. A Chinese man comes in carrying some records. Bruno reprimands him, saying he’s late and that the client is waiting. Bruno reads the records. He tells Eve that they don’t know anything. Even with the information their company has, Dallas’ whereabouts remain a mystery. Bruno apologizes.

Back to Firo, he searches for Ennis. He overhears some thugs bullying an old man who is carrying a box filled with bottles. The thugs demanded that the old man hand it over. They kick the old man. Firo comes and tells the thugs he is just examining whether they are prepared and whether they have the proper skills to execute a robbery. A thug tells him to get lost. Firo tells them that it looks like what they are doing is child play. Firo introduces himself and tells that thugs that he is a young leader from the Martello family. A thug attacks him but Firo is far too skilled. The others attack but fall.

Firo approaches the old man and asks him if he is alright. The old man does not reply and instead checks his box. Firo asks him if the box is really precious to him. The old man tells Firo it has nothing to do with him. He tells Firo to leave. Firo reminds him he just saved his life. Firo then asks the man if he saw a woman wearing a black suit pass by. The old man says he has no idea what Firo is talking about. Firo leaves and tells the old man to leave while the thugs are still out. The old man leaves too but someone grabs and kills him, taking hold if the box. That person was one of the thugs Firo fought.

In the Flying Pussyfoot, a man who just came inside the dining car looks around. He thinks he should get started. Carrying two guns, he tells the passengers to raise their hands. Bruno comes in brandishing a knife. He tells the passengers not to move. On the other end, there are three men with guns. The passengers are confused. Isaac tells Miria to get to the ground, raise her hands and not move. Bruno, seeing he has no chance against the others, apologizes then leaves the dining car.

The old man who was killed by the thugs resurrect. Ennis finds him and tells the old man, Mr. Barnes, that she is looking for him.

Jacuzzi discovers that the conductors have been killed. He thinks the Rail Tracer has come.

There sure is a lot of “bumping into” in this episode: Ladd bumps into Jacuzzi, Maiza bumps into Isaac, Jacuzzi bumps into Donny and Bruno, and Firo bumps into Ennis.

Oh well, the events in Baccano! aren’t arranged in chronological order. It makes the show a little confusing. You’ll get used to it though… somehow. Similar Posts:

The Flying Pussyfoot is a transcontinental train that travels from Chicago to New York. An old woman, who is supposed to board the train, decides against it, saying that bad things are going to happen, a premonition to the tragic incident which Gustav of Daily Days mentioned in the first episode.

A few months before that fateful day, Isaac and Miria are in California attempting to mine gold but are unsuccessful. It has been a year since they left New York and during their stay there, the two have become close with Ennis. Isaac and Miria decide to go back to New York but since they have no money, they plan on committing train robbery. The two, however, manage to rob some establishment prior to their departure.

A group of musicians, of whom Chane is one, is also boarding the Flying Pussyfoot. They requested that some of them will stay in the luggage room to keep watch over the instruments. Jacuzzi, who’s with Nice and two other men, upon overhearing this becomes worried that the luggage room will be guarded. Nice explains to him that what they are aiming for is in another luggage room.

Somewhere nearby, Ladd is wondering who else is riding the train. He is boarding along with Lua and several men in white. Ladd says that the first class passengers must be enjoying the night but they’ll take care of them. One of his men arrives, saying that he managed to get a conductor’s uniform.

A senator’s wife and daughter are also traveling to New York. There also seems to be something important transported in the Flying Pussyfoot. The senator’s assistant tells the senator that the object is places as far away from the first class car (where the senator’s wife and daughter will be riding) as possible. If anything happens, they could have the train make an emergency stop and just let the two off. The senator, however, comments that he doesn’t care and that the object is more important and that if anything happens to his wife and daughter, it would be their fate.

Back to the train, Jacuzzi is taking with someone about the thing they are aiming for, which seems to be a new type of bomb. Jacuzzi worries if they will be able to steak it but Nice assures him that it will be alright since he is with her. Nice sees Isaac and Miria nearby and notices how lively they are. Nice thinks that they must be actors or something. She tells Jacuzzi to try talking to them (she wants Jacuzzi to become more sociable). Jacuzzi hesitantly approaches Isaac and Miria and attempts to have a conversation with them. He eventually warms up and enjoys.

Czeslaw, who seems to be playing with the senator’s daughter, bumps into Jacuzzi. Czeslaw apologizes but Jacuzzi tells him it’s alright. The senator’s wife arrives and apologizes. She, then, sits together with them and they introduce themselves. Isaac tells Jacuzzi that if he does anything bad, he will be eaten by the Rail Tracer.

Meanwhile, the conductors are also talking about the Rail Tracer, a monster that chases trains. If it catches up, the passengers will disappear. He explains that if one tells the story aboard the train, the Rail Tracer is sure to come.

Jacuzzi worries after hearing the story from Isaac. Isaac tells him that there is one way to prevent the Rail Tracer from coming but he forgot. The conductor who was telling the story to his companion was about to explain it but was interrupted by him, saying that it’s time. The other conductor switched a light on to signal someone. The conductor, who told the Rail Tracer story, tries to continue but his companion says he knows about it. He says it’s a story of ghosts, about those who are called Lemures.

The group of musicians prepare for their agenda. Their leader explains to them that they who are called Lemures should not fear death as they are already ghosts.

As for Jacuzzi, he becomes more worried since Isaac didn’t know the solution. The bartender tells him that a conductor told him the story before. Jacuzzi rushes off to go to the conductor and hear the solution. Despite the commotion caused by Jacuzzi, Czeslaw wonders why there was no reaction when he introduced himself (he must be known for something). He wonders if there is an immortal among them.

Back to the conductors, the older one explains that the Lemures had a great leader but he was arrested by the American government. He further explains that what they are going to do is a ritual for their leader and as the musicians’ leaders also explained, the passengers are sacrificial lambs. The conductor says that by taking the passengers of the train, including the senator’s wife and daughter, as hostage, they could demand the release of their leader who will undergo an interrogation in New York the following day.

Jacuzzi, meanwhile, races off to seek the conductor. He bumps into Ladd and apologizes, saying that the train is in danger and that he must find the conductor. The older conductor, however, points a gun at his companion telling him that there is no way to prevent the Train Racer from coming.

Anyway, although the previous episode was somehow incoherent, this episode begins to explain the circumstances that led to the accident that befell the Flying Pussyfoot. It is interesting how several of the characters’ agenda converge in the train: Isaac, Miria and Czeslaw are on their way to New York, Jacuzzi and Nice plan to steal a bomb transported in the train (this could be the object that the senator was referring to), Chane, along the Lemures, plan on taking the passengers hostage, Ladd seems to have some sinister plan involving the passenger as well. As Gustav stated in the previous episode, there is one accident, but many stories that could explain it and many people involved in it.

Baccano! is Italian for “noise”. According to the author of the novels from which the series was based on, he wanted it to mean “stupid commotion”. True enough, the first episode is dissonant and incoherent. After finishing it you can’t help but ask yourself what it was all about.

Carole is investigating a series of stories. The Vice-Director, asks her why she chose November 1930 as the start of the story. She could have chosen the year 1711 when the ship, Advenna Avis crossed the Atlantic or she could have chosen the tragic event that occurred in the transcontinental train, the Flying Pussyfoot. Carole states that she chose that story because it was the first story they came across.

The Vice-Director then asks her who the lead character(s) of story would be: the robbers Isaac Diant and Miria Harvent, Czeslaw Meyer, the boy who suffers from a cursed destiny, or the intelligent executive of the Gandor family (Luck Gandor, I guess). Carole replies that she chose Firo Prochainezo as the lead of the story and that she chose him because he is lead character-like. The Vice-Director explains to her that whoever she chose as the center of the story would change the story kaleidoscopically. He says that there is one accident, but many stories that could explain it and many people involved in it. Carole says that the story could also start from the mafia families. The Vice-Director then states that it wouldn’t be strange if they were the beginning of the story.

Anyway, lots of characters have been shown already. Here’s what happened to them so far: Firo, together with Luck (who’s supposedly killed by the other mafia family), miraculously survive being shot at the library/bookstore. They meet up with Ennis, Maiza, Keith and Berga to wait for Isaac, Miria and Czeslaw who’ll be arriving on board the Flying Pussyfoot. Jacuzzi and Nice are also on the train. We also see Ladd and Lua about to be captured. Then, there’s Chane who ended up in some body of water. Eve is also seen earlier, looking for Dallas, whom the mafia is also looking for.

One interesting thing is how most of the characters are immortal. Isaac, Firo, Luck, Czeslaw and Maiza too (he was on board Advenna Avis). The Vice-director spoke of an accident, which probably has something to do with the mafia and these immortals.

Baccano! is bloody and a bit confusing, with all the characters thrown together. That makes it bloody confusing. The characters’ names are aweful, and for an anime set in New York, unrealistic. After all, where can you find someone named Jacuzzi? Then again, you can’t find immortals in the real world either. Well, at least Baccano! only has twelve episodes. It makes it easier to watch amidst all the stupid commotion.Similar Posts:
