It's been more than a month since I had this post in mind, but for some reason I decided to forget about the idea and even scrapped my draft post for this orz. But lo and behold, as Crusader opens up the topic about biases, I decided to give this post one more shot. Also because I’ve learned some insights from a book I’m currently reading, Why Men Love Bitches, as out-of-character as my RL colleagues and friends find it to be. Just for the record, I don’t really agree with everything that’s written in this book, because of several principles I adhere to, but it’s valuable for gaining insights on the nature of both men and women (and it EMPOWERS women), similar to the book Men are From Mars, Women are From Venus Before I divert any further from the topic, here goes…

As you can see, most (like 99%?), if not all, the bloggers of True Tears and KimiKiss are people born with a Y chromosome. But well, considering the measly number of female bloggers on the interwebz, I think it goes without saying that there will always be more guys blogging a series rather than girls (with a few shoujo or BL shows as exception). The thing is, aside from the values, principles, beliefs, etc. that we have, gender also plays a role in our biases in anime, particularly how we perceive characters, why we support a certain girl, or a certain character archetype for the lead guy (or a guy for the lead girl, in the case of reverse harems). Like why I support Noe and Asuka, as opposed to Hiromi and Eriko, for instance, which I will be delving on in this post.

Noe is Moe~!

While the preference of guys when it comes to female characters (or certain archetypes) is a projection of their ideal girl [romantic] partner in real life (if these guys have come to prefer 2D over 3D, I still think it’s a projection of their frustration over not being able to get that girl IRL), this doesn’t apply to normal hetero girls who are at the other end of the spectrum. In my case,　my preference and bias for certain female characters become a projection of the ideal girl I look up to, a role model of some sort. Hence, I typically like the optimistic, genki, strong and empowered type of girls, the category in which characters like Asuka and Noe (sans the aggressiveness and eccentricity) fall under. In a way, I consider those traits as moe+ points.

The plethora of Hiromi and Eriko fans got me thinking, how guys could love characters as bitchy or flawed as them. It’s not until recently that I felt this was a blow to myself, as well as other girls, the moment I realized that the very reason why I dislike them so much (as far as initial apprehension goes) is because I find them to be the spitting image of the self I want to get rid of. It’s like the exact same feeling of Nomiya in H&C when he looks at Mayama, who reminds him of the juvenile self he has come to hate.

In the case of Hiromi (and her accompanying stock archetype), I am reminded of my weak, pessimistic, indecisive, jealous, inferior, angsty self (I’m talking about the earlier episodes in this one, because Hiromi has more or less redeemed herself by the end of the series). The same goes with Eriko, who I can even consider my kindred soul, in terms of the loner-ness and inherent inability to open up to other people (which I hope I’ve already overcome through the years), as well as the similarity in our childhood past. If you’ve read my really emo Valentine post, you’ll have an idea as to what I’m talking about here. Too bad the anime decided not to delve in much about this anymore; otherwise it would’ve allowed more people to sympathize with Eriko’s plight, and realize why she became the Eriko that we know.

And now to address the issue of why guys are attracted to the Hiromi or Eriko types…

I remember T_I’s comment in one of my True Tears post:

…Shin has a complex that is not that uncommon within guys.

He’s attracted to another person’s sadness. He has been building this fantasy of wanting to be there for someone and taking their sadness away. Not only that, he’s quite deep into his obsession as you can tell by how melodramatic he is about it in his diary.

He’s not in love with someone. He’s in love with the idea of helping someone. And that’s different.

Although this speaks true for the most part, I’d say Sherry Argov, author of Why Men Love Bitches gives the more apt explanation for this:

When you appear more softer and feminine, you appeal to his instinct to protect. When you appear more aggressive, you appeal to his instinct to compete.

This reaffirms this hypothesis I had on the tendency of a guy to act as a knight in shining armor for that one special girl. Not to say that men are egotistical jerks (although you’d have to admit they naturally have that sense of ego, no matter how little or much, with the exception of some people), but I think being needed is a way for them to reaffirm their sense of worth. It allows them the opportunity to shower the girl with love, and in turn, allow the girl to love them back.

This also explains Shin’s attraction to Hiromi (rather than Noe), as well as Kazuki’s attraction to Eriko (rather than Asuka), and why a percentage of male audience prefers Hiromi and Eriko (or Mao and Yuumi) as well. And this could also explain the moe fandom in general. Nevertheless, I still maintain my stand that a woman should develop a sense of self-worth, identity, confidence and assertiveness, so as to make the relationship work out in the long run.

And finally, to end this post, I just like to say that despite the antagonism I feel towards certain female characters, I do believe that deep in the heart of a woman is that desire for a guy to love them, despite being a flawed Hiromi, Eriko, or what have you. (gawd I can’t believe I’m uttering all this cheesiness x__x;;; )

P.S. Feel free to correct what I mentioned here, because I know for a fact that these are rough generalizations and doesn’t apply to everyone. To each his own, after all.Similar Posts:

The shock on Hiromi’s face when she realized Shin’s gaze was fixed on Noe.

Perhaps this is a clear sign that it’s time for Hiromi to move on? Or not? Argh. Despite all that happened in this episode, I fear that there can still be a twist in the end x___x I’m crossing my fingers, that Shin will choose Noe D: Don’t let me down now, Shinichirou >E

Noe, now known as the girl who leapt from a tree.

Again, what a cliffhanger this episode had. After the Mugiha festival dance, Shin goes to look for Noe, and perhaps confess to her? Then he sees her fly from a tree Nooeeee! don’t die!! x__X;;;

P.S. I can’t help but think of the song In Your Eyes as I watch this episode, especially when I saw Noe’s reflection in Shin’s eyes LOL xDDDD

P.P.S I kept going “OMGosh O_O” for who knows how many times after watching this episode, my brother already thinks I’m crazy. Though I think he already knew that wayy back

Until the last episode, I was ready to run up my white flag for a Shin x Noe ending, which resulted to my bittersweet Noe-moing. This episode, however, brought a faint hope of that ending with Shin. Whether this was made to give Noe fans a sense of false hope, we’ll see next week. Damn that cliffhanger! >_<

While people are contending whether Shin's reminiscence of Noe are simply out of guilt, or a genuine love, I'll express my opinion about the latter's possibility.

“You never realize the value of something until it’s gone”, might explain what Shin is feeling right now. It was, after all, Noe who stood by him during the times when he was down and depressed. When he was all confused about what to do with his life, especially after Hiromi revealed that they are siblings, which turned out to be nothing else but a fallacy. Noe loved Shin dearly, and when he confessed that he liked her, she genuinely believed in his words. No questions asked.

If there was any fault with Noe, it’s that she became too trusting; She bought Shin’s confession, despite knowing that part of his heart belongs to Hiromi, from the very start. And that cost her dearly. She’s now having an emotional breakdown, because of the pain and hurt caused by loving and trusting Shin. But emoe Noe still remains selfless and admirable as ever. Despite being a victim of this circumstance, she blames no one, not even Shin who gave her a sense of false hope.

I refuse to consider Noe as crazy at this point, she still hasn’t lost it, mind you. She’s been a little eccentric from the beginning, so seeing her take Jibeta for the flight of her life doesn’t freak me out. She’s trying to run away from all the pain she’s feeling right now, yes, but not to the point of being suicidal or being a chicken murderer. Her last words about Hiromi being the person in Shin’s heart shows that she’s on the verge of fully accepting this painful fact, a step towards being able to move on with her life. I have full faith in Noe, that she’ll be able to recover from all this by the next episode. Ganbareeeee Noe!!! ;____; If Shin will end up with Noe, I hope the next episode will show us that he genuinely loves her, that the brief time they spent together meant more to him than anything else. If Shin decides to “love” Noe out of pity, he’ll incur my wrath >E

And btw, the Shin->Hiromi hug in episode 10 is more than just a hug. It spoke a thousand words about Shin’s true feelings. The wall of lies that Shin built crumbled down in that instant. That scene didn’t make Noe jealous (someone else is filled with that emotion), it was more a painful slap of reality for her. Noe had too much trust, while Hiromi lacks it. Hiromi has to rid herself of doubts and learn to trust, in order for her relationship with Shin work. If there’s something bugging her, she should say so, confront Shin, and not keep things to herself =___=”’

It just pains me to see that people are now referring to Noe as a crazy or demented girl, after her emotionally depressed state in this episode. You people have no heart! Calling Noe crazy shows how lacking you are in sensing the depths of her magokoro. Shame on you. Consider yourself one of those people spreading false rumors on Noe (refer to what Jun said in episode 8), those who shun her for her eccentricity T__T

While some of you have probably disowned Noe in her emotionally depressed state, I stand by her through thick and thin. rawr >E

As for episode 12, the spoiler mentioned that he’ll come into terms with his TRUE SELF, so we’ll see whether he chooses Hiromi or Noe.

I don’t really have much to say about Aiko and Nobuse, I’m just happy for those two Similar Posts:

Something came to me after watching True Tears episode 10 and I started composing this Perso-Noe-fication of mine... I guess this is my way of emo-ing over Noe's sad fate, made even worse by the spoilers I read x__x

I put myself in Noe's shoes for a while, and came up with this monologue / letter, which is a mix of my own feelings and what I think would be Noe's feelings. I just hope it didn't become out of character ^^;;;

Here's a sneak peak:

-------------------------------------

Beloved Obaachama,

All along I thought Shinichirou would be the destined person to bring back my tears, not of sadness but of joy and happiness. But I guess I was wrong. How foolish I was to think that his love for me was true, when all that he told me that day turned out to be nothing else but empty promises. What's simply written on the ephemeral snows were never made to last. That I should've known from the start. Oh why, of all times, did my magokoro (true-heart)-perceptiveness have to fail me that time.

————————————-

Beloved Obaachama,

All along I thought Shinichirou would be the destined person to bring back my tears, not of sadness but of joy and happiness. But I guess I was wrong. How foolish I was to think that his love for me was true, when all that he told me that day turned out to be nothing else but empty promises. What’s simply written on the ephemeral snows were never made to last. That I should’ve known from the start. Oh why, of all times, did my magokoro (true-heart)-perceptiveness have to fail me that time.

On one cold winter night, he wrapped his arms around his true love, and in that hug I woke up, realizing it was never meant to be me. Shinichirou’s heart belongs to someone else. It was never mine, and never will be. Now I look at him and all I can see is that pained look on his face, and I know exactly what that means. He’s drifting farther and farther away from me… and although it’s not yet over between us, I can already see this love becoming a thing of the past. He was my first love, but sadly, it was not made to last.

Obaachama, with all that happened, I can’t help but wonder, what did I do do deserve this? Should love be realized at the expense of someone else’s happiness? Was it necessary to involve in-noe-cent lives in this mess, only for Shinichirou to realize that there’s no one else who can fill that void in his heart, but that one girl who kept him from flying?

Shinichirou says that he’ll do everything properly now, but the damage has been done. The hurt and the pain he caused can no longer be undone. Then again, there’s no use looking back and feeling regret over what has happened. The best thing I can do now is to move on and look forward to what lies ahead, a future that can be bright, even without Shinichirou by my side.

A bunny recently told me that Shinichirou will soon be freed from the shackles that’s keeping him from flying, as he realizes for whose sake it is that he’s trying so hard to succeed. I guess all I can do now is look up to the skies, and bid Shinichirou happiness with his true love, as both of them will now be able to fly free at last. Obaachama, can I at least think that I helped Shinichirou find his wings, and perhaps rid him of his sad tears? Even though that meant allowing him to fly towards the arms of another, at the expense of my own true tears.

————————————-

…ok, pardon the gushing emo-ness x___x;;; Similar Posts:

First of all, I'm proud to say that I had a guest appearance in this episode. I am ze almighty rabbit who caused Jun and Hiromi to stumble and fall! mwahahaha. Ok, I kid. It was only a little prank, supposedly to heat up things between Jun x Hiromi, but my plan backfired as Shin ended up showing his true feelings with a hug of concern. Drats! TT__TT

*ahem* Hope you find that amusing, coz the next part of this post is gonna be emo~

a trickle of true tear…

Long before this episode, some bloggers have already fathomed the coming of doomsday in True Tears, how Shin x Noe’s relationship is bound to doom after it took off from a rough and crooked road of [thought-to-be] unrequited love, misunderstandings, and deceit. Part of me thought of this possibility, but my love for moe Noe kept me from acknowledging this. I sealed off those evil thoughts, and became optimistic that Shin x Noe can work out, especially after seeing the beautiful progress of their relationship in episode 8. Like Crusader, I also thought how wonderful this show would be, if it breaks away from the conventional my first love is my true love element we’ve seen too often. If Shin will end up with Noe, Hiromi with Jun, Ai with Miyokichi, then all’s well that ends well.

After watching episode 8 last week, I was at my Shin x Noe shipping full throttle, seeing how True Tears-rific of an episode that was. Looking at the spoilers for episodes 9-11 even dispelled my doubts about a happy Shin x Noe ending… or so I thought. I soon realized how I have fallen trap to a silly misunderstanding and over-optimism like Noe, when hashihime told of the sad truth mentioned in these spoilers in the animesuki forum. My comprehension fails =__=”’

Is it really over for Noe, or does she still stand a chance with the remaining 4 episodes?

Then here comes episode 9, bringing with it an even more forceful slap of reality and some sort of mock (at least for a Noe x Shin shipper), as I envisioned it hysterically laughing at my Shin x Noe wishful thinking. Reality bites. And it stingssss. First it was Asuka (KimiKiss), now Noe. How come all the girls I’m supporting in the triangles of these shows end up having the short end of the stick?! Whyyy

I hate to admit it, but Stripey-nii hit the nail on the head for this one. Now the wall of lies and misunderstanding built by the characters are crumbling down. Shin’s true feelings are starting to show <strike>its fangs</strike>, and Noe acknowledges the sad truth that Shin’s flight is bound to be headed for Hiromi. Shin’s mom and dad also clear up the Hiromi-Shin sibling-ness misunderstanding, so now the incest taboo element of the show has been scratched off.

The only thing that will probably keep Hiromi from confessing her true feelings to Shin now would be Jun-nii, who longs for nothing else but the happiness of his sister. And I wonder if the episode preview is indicative of this…

The thawing of Nakagami-kaasan was a little, too fast, however. Now I’m perplexed as to why she even told that lie to Hiromi in the first place ?___?

The great Omni believes that Noe is the destined girl in the series, and although that seems bleak to me at this point, I’ll be more than happy (to wipe away my sad tears) when that happens.Similar Posts:

I managed to catch up with Persona this week, and wow, I’m hooked! This show has now escalated as one of my fave Winter offerings, side by side True Tears, both of which are instrumental to thawing my Winter’s block.

True Tears is shaping up to become one of the best dramas I’ve seen, with its godly animation, and great execution. It's True Tears-rific. It’s like my forsaken dramas of the past, done right. The stereotype characters I supposedly hate are still there, the weak indecisive characters, but now I'm able to empathize with them. I don’t know if I owe that to the show itself, the presence of moe Noe, who makes the show less emo and more fun and whimsical, and the H&C-esque monologues, or is it because of my own maturity... hmm~ Nevertheless, I have become an avid Noe x Shin supporter after watching episode 8! I am so gonna cry if they won’t end up together ;___;

Both Persona and True Tears grew to become shows close to my heart now, cheesy as that might sound. Both these shows leave me hanging at the edge of my seat after the end of each episode, and make me emo. My Persona-l emoness is of the positive happy sentimental light, whilst True Tears is of the bittersweet heart-wrenching kind. In terms of Ai and Hiromi’s circumstances, that is, because Noe and Shinichirou’s development make me all giddy happy (and I hope it stays that way >_<)

I’ll delve more on Persona in this post, and save up my thoughts on True Tears in another post, if my True Tears-rific mode still hasn’t gone down by then. Many fanboys have already been praising this show, so I’m also thinking if I’ll be able to contribute something worthy o_o I feel like shipping Shin x Noe, but I was a bit saddened by the spoilers... *rids herself of evil thoughts* Hope I'll be able to blog both these shows from now on =)

I feel a little more inclined to blog Persona, considering the lack of love its getting from bloggers, and my ‘innate ability’ to fangirl over the show :P

Persona, for me, isn’t just about the cool fight scenes. Well I know there’s not much fight scenes to begin with, but still. It’s not like your typical action shounen offering, in that it focuses more on the characters’ emotions, as they face each Persona battles, more than the action and GARness of the characters. The action is just a foil, to the deeper psychological and emotional battle the characters have, down to the depths of their Persona soul.　The Persona, which represents the soul and core being of the characters, are evoked and wielded in accordance to the latent’s emotions. These Personas are dynamic and 3-D, possessing emotions and a mind of its own (in-sync with its ‘master’), retained even after it’s been forcefully dragged out of its original shell (by the non-Naturals / Outsiders).

The non-Naturals who steal other people’s Personas are most likely the kind of people who feel inferior and incomplete. They seek out to devour the personas of other people, to fill the void in their life. By the end of the show, I think we’ll see how 3-D all the characters can be, even the villains, as we find out what really drove them to join the Marebito/Outsiders group.

Beneath being Persona~l, this show is a tale of friendship and love, the bonds between people, between family members. It also tells of people’s dreams and hope; how one can recover from guilts of the past, look forward to a brighter future despite all the tragedies (yes I know it might be too early to say this, but I feel it’s going that direction). The theme of friendship and family affects me the most, making me all sentimental and weep true tears of joy. Combine that with the sentimental BGM played in the sentimental scenes, I’m all the more moved ;___;

Episodes 4 and 6 are my personal favorites, because of the insights it provided regarding the relationship of the Kanzato brothers. These were such heartwarming episodes. In episode 6 especially, Ryou showed clear signs of thawing, and that means a LOT. The teddy bear mascot scene in this episode would’ve been more fun and exciting however, if they showed us how Ryou actually fought with the thugs with his costume. That’ll be so Fumoffu-cool X3

I know some people have dropped this show off their radar, probably because it didn’t meet their expectations of the ever cool Persona, especially compared to the P3 game. It’s still a great anime IMO, despite the lack of action-packed scenes and the slow pace of the show. It might be bland and boring for some people, but not for people like me who can appreciate its slice-of-life-and-paranormal elements, albeit being slow, emo, and somewhat confusing.

Gonna post a bit of my thoughts on episode 8 in a separate post Similar Posts:

"O what a tangled web we weave, when first we practice to deceive."

This phrase best sums up the current situation of True Tears, with its complicated characters and relationships. The more I watch it, the more I feel as if my [hated] melodrama animes, particularly Marmalade Boy (the half brother and sister angle, past issues between their parents), Kimagure Orange Road (the unbreakable triangle loop), and Kimi ga Nozomu Eien (pimping someone else for the one you like; not fighting for the love you want), are coming back to haunt me.

The plot devices and the schema of relationships in True Tears seem all familiar, but for some reason it still proves to be a refreshing watch. Perhaps it's the awesome visuals, which accentuates all the subtleties in each of the character's actions and emotions. Or the fact that it's only 13-episodes long, which means that it won't beat around the bush unlike the aforementioned animes, and resolve things rather quickly (and hopefully, effectively).

So what does the web of deceit look like now? JRoxas provided a graphical view of this entangled relationships in the show, and just to expound on this further...

The sweater, embodiment of Aiko’s woven facade - of lies and truth.

Aiko loves Shinichirou, but Shinichirou sees her as no more than a friend. On top of being oblivious to Ai’s feelings, Shinichirou takes on the role of the omniscient matchmaker who knows what’s best for her love life, and hooks her up with his best friend Miyokichi.

Ai however decides not stand up for feelings and goes <strike>with the flow</strike> out with Miyokichi, in the hopes that this will allow her to become closer to Shinichirou(? Based on her comment in the second episode; though it can also be to stir up Shinichirou’s “jealousy”). Now that she has a boyfriend, she still harbors feelings for Shinichirou, and it shows in her actions, especially as of late. She’s becoming more frustrated as the number of girls going after Shinichirou have increased (x3) and she can’t even be considered a contender given her current “in a relationship” state (unless she breaks free).

Aiko is breaking free, at long last.

Miyokichi already felt that something’s wrong with his relationship with Ai, ever since the day she asked out Shinichirou to go on shopping without even telling him about it. He tried to dismiss any negative and malicious thoughts about this, but Aiko’s behavior shows otherwise.

A smile, with not even a hint of lies, doubts, nor fears.

Noe likes Shinichirou, and sticks to him like a glue. Is it true love or just a pet-ty love? Jun-nii knows best.

Jun (aka No.6) loves Noe, perhaps more than a sister, based on what we’ve seen of his actions in episode 4. Being the good brother that he is, he allows Noe to pursue the love she wants, despite his feelings. He even helps out(?), by matchmaking her with Shinichirou. He orders Shinichirou to go out with Noe, but we’re not sure if it’s triggered by a selfish or pure unselfish motive.

Noe is bold and aggressive o_O~

Shinichirou is drawn to the eccentric Noe, and how he wasn’t able to outright refuse Jun-nii’s order shows that he’s attracted to her, enough to cause him confusion. But then again it could also be because of frustration from his thought-to-be unrequited love for Hiromi, after finding out that he likes No.6, or so he thinks.

Oh to love like a child again, innocent and free from complications.

Hiromi actually loves Shinichirou, ever since they were kids (from the flashbacks we’ve seen), but issues in her troubled past (involving Shinichirou and his parents) caused her to conceal these feelings. When her rival for the love of Shinichirou in the person Noe suddenly appears, and the balance in their relationship started to crumble. Hiromi denies that she’s affected by Noe, convincing her friend (and herself) that she actually likes No.6, which Shinichirou witnesses, out of all people.

Despite Hiromi’s inkling desire to correct Shinichirou’s misconception, she takes the indecisive path and leaves things as misunderstood as it is. Again, brought about by her troubled past. Shinichirou takes on the role of the martyr, who gives up on his love for Hiromi, for the sake of the guy she truly loves, or so he thinks (again). Whilst brother Jun is hooking him up with Noe, he repays the favor by hooking him up with Hiromi.

Jun is all game to the idea, and orders Hiromi to go on a date with him. Despite knowing his feelings, as well as both Shinichirou and Hiromi’s feelings for each other. Not knowing that Jun’s date is Hiromi, Noe cheers her brother from the bottom of her heart.

Initially resistant to the idea of having a date with Jun, Hiromi agrees soon afterwards. Either driven by being upset at Shinichirou’s decision to do her this unsolicited favor, or just for the sake of it.

Come episode 5, Noe decides to get close to Hiromi, to mend the relationship between her and Shinichirou, and rid Shinichirou of the worthless tears she caused him.

In episode 6, Hiromi finds out that Shinichirou is gonna go out with Noe, but doesn’t know the exact details of Shinichirou’s agreement with Jun. On top of this, Shinichirou’s mom continues to show her contempt, scorning her cheap girl behavior. Hiromi’s pent-up feelings gush out at that instant, as she recalls her words on that snowy night. The very toxic to her indecisiveness and passiveness.

It’s no joke, Shinichirou.

Shinichirou overhears this conversation (this plot device has now been used twice), and finds out the possibility that Hiromi is his sister. If this is indeed true, then it means that their parents also found themselves caught in a similar entanglement of deceit. Will we consider them, victims of fate and circumstance then?

Can tears borne from deceit be considered ‘true tears’?

Will Shinichirou and Hiromi finally be able to break free from this tangled web, we’ll find out in the next episode.

And, here’s a little something to think about, as a closing to this post…

Can the very fate that brought these characters together, be the one that’ll also pull them apart? Or is fate nothing else but an invisible confinement, to which people limit themselves to? As they allow fate to decide things for them, and settle for mediocrity instead of doing something to overcome this fate. If so, is this fate yet another deception then? A layer on top of the web of deceit we now see in True Tears.Similar Posts:

I stumbled upon these while I was searching for the csubbed True Tears episode 4, and found them to be really lovely pics~ just beautiful <3 It was not until a few seconds after that I noticed the annoying caption on the pictures, screaming “TRUE TEARS;; ON AIR”, which reminded me of the comparisons made by other bloggers regarding the similarity of this series to Kanon’s AIR, which is understandably, a debatable subject.

I know this is most likely coincidental, yet I couldn’t help but think of the intended reference possibility.

In any case, not having watched AIR has its advantages, as it allows me to enjoy True Tears as it is. A wonderful anime that might just leave me as torn-in-between the girls in the triangle, similar to KimiKiss, though on a different “emotional level”.Similar Posts:
